I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
I think we have added at least three free agent young starters to our team. We also have had several other players that have stepped up and could possibly be solid starters next year. I think that there is allot of positives to take out of this year. Next year we will be a much younger team, and have a bunch of new bona fide starters. Banks, Armstrong, Torain, and Lichtenstieger, are starters in my opinion. Bryant, Grossman, Jackson, Jarmon, and Barnes, all look like they could be potential starters. Remember, Joe Gibbs was 6-10 his first year back with the Redskins. We have 1st, 2nd, 5th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 7th draft choices next year. Thats more than normal. The only problem I had with this win is it sent us careening down the draft board. What do you guys think?

THe hot commodities in the QBs are beyond our reach anyway so good for the win. We need linemen not a QB now.

A team is nothing, without a Quarterback. Keep drafting them untill you have one and then you can build your team. |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
unexpected contributions from players like Jeremy Jarmon, Rob Jackson, Kevin Barnes, and even Terrance Austin had a reception. It is indeed good to see some of these younger players who may be counted on in the future gaining valuable experience. Playing out of necessity is probably the only way they would have gotten the opportunity to show what they can do, at least for this season anyway. Good to see they're taking advantage of the opportunities given.

Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
I think we go franchise qb in the draft this year, unless there's none worth taking by the time we pick. And even though I loved the effort by the no name guys today, I'm not entirely sure how many of them we'll see on the roster next season. It's not about whether we won or lost today, or even next week for that matter. I, and the coaching staff it seems, just want to evaluate players for next season.

As long as its not the JC fiasco all over again. I kind of bawk at the idea of drafting a QB (even though it's a glaring need and we basically have to) simply because the chance of getting a good, franchise QB in the draft is so low. Last year was a really good year with drafting QBs with Bradford, Sanchez, Tebow (though he's still up for debate, I suppose) etc. Maybe it's just because I don't know 2011 draft class yet, I don't follow college much. But I'm still deathly afraid of us drafting a bust or someone we're just gonna end up shipping out a few years down the road. |

As a fan, watching the team get burned with QB draft selections so much in the past, I'd rather not even bother with it. Just give me a year like we had with Brad Johnson in '99 -- a moderately priced free agent who steps right in a meshes perfectly with the offense to carry us to the playoffs. Just build up the damn lines. |

First round QB busts aren't too bad actually if it's just the 1st rounder and you don't waste anything else to pick the QB. Oakland totally bombed with Russell, but it seems that they recovered in the next season to have a pretty damn talented team that even a mediocre QB like JC can find some success there. JC's failure here hurt us more because it cost us picks. |

Other than Luck and he's even a ?, what QB's are FRANCHISE type in this draft?? Don't say Newton or Locker |

Nice to see a bunch of no-names stepping up. These are the type of guys that are the backbone of a good team. |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
Now let's see what we can get from the young guys who have shown stuff before too.. Davis, etc
gotta give playmakers a shot, the guys that can turn a 5yd throw to a 20 yd gain, etc can't wait to watch the cap of this game |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
anthony bryant isnt as young as we keep making it seem. hes 29, but he has played well and could fill a role next season. i thought rob jackson looked extremely good today. kevin barnes stepped up. macho harris did an alright job i suppose considering the circumstances.
on the veteran side, ive been very impressed with vonnie holiday. he has played all across the defensive line and works hard, never complains, and is a good role model for our young guys. |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
I've gotta root for Macho seeing as I'm a Tech fan as well.. hope he can continue making an impact until we get the position refilled
|
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
macho would be a good guy to keep around either way. he can play any position in the secondary and could be a good special teams guy at the very least, returned kicks in college as well
|
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
Part of me is happy but a bigger part just thinks maybe our coaching is pretty good and our vet players just suck. Guys like Rob Jackson coming in and contributing as much as a guy like McIntosh is telling.

Nah, our tackling has regressed, we get penalized at the worst times on special teams, and Kyle took a few steps back this week with regards to playcalling. Kyle may improve once he gets "unspoiled", but the other two should know how to coach fundamentals. |

It's not like you are say, biased, in anyway. Not like you are a VT fan and want to see VT guys on the Skins or anything.... |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
Rob Jackson looked like a real nice fit at OLB - a very pleasant surprise. Kevin Barnes making a play was big too. Hopefully these guys get a chance to play bigger roles next season.

Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
Maybe we dont need so many fills as we thought on defense.
Barnes has stepped it up, and can play just about anywhere at a good level. I would like to see Rogers come back. He may not make many INT's, but he's pretty solid in coverage most of the time. Rob Jackson, and Orakpo as our 2 OLB'S? I like the sound of that.. Now every dog has his day, but Jackson was a machine today. He was abusing the tackles, and making great solid tackles in open field as well flying around the field. As far as ILB. I would part ways with Rocky. He's just not cutting it, and half the time his tackling is below average and he doesn't shed blocks very well.. it's amazing to watch Fletcher fly around the field being 6 or so years older then Rocky. I like Perry Riley as well, so if we can pick up a little more depth in this position I would be happier. Our strongest of the defense is our DB's imo. Besides the lack at FS, but Macho looked okay there today. Atleast he was making tackles, and laying the wood. Unlike Moore who can't tackle high school RB's. Bryant is looking pretty solid at NT, and has been doing 100x better a job then Kemo has this year atleast in game time. Maybe we should use the 2nd round to pick up some depth here? |

this is a common mistake.....we have been doing ths for over 10 yrs now. Draft and solidify ur OL/DL FIRST...then worry about a QB. Having the ability to run the ball helps whoever is under center |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
While impressed with the effort, I would not let up in areas of obvious need of skill and depth. If the QB of the future is not on the board then trading down and getting more youth should be the plan. Adding depth and competition to the DL, OL, and secondary should be of the highest priorities.

i think the real question is are these guys any good. yeah they're good enough to start here, but are they good enough to be top tier starters? but good to see some of the younger guys get in there and play. |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
Yes, i think we've got some contributions from some young players like TW, Banks especially since he was an unknown, Riley potentially. Armstrong might become a solid role player. In contrast, to our NFC East brothren, we are severly lacking though. Compare and contrast the young talent. Not close. I think MS and BA are going to be doing the right things though. It takes time so we've got to be patient w/ these guys.
Not trying to be Debbie Downer here, but w/ the exception of TW and possibly banks I don't see too many future stars, playmakers. Some possible depth and or/roleplayers yes. I'm happy to see guys come in yesterday, play hard and get the win. There's a long way to go though to match up w/ the big boys. |

Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
Armstrong proved himself this year as well.
Even if all the guys that stepped up yesterday only pan out to be quality depth guys, that's not something that should be looked down upon. Quality depth is something we've been seriously lacking. |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
It is great to see all these "scrubs" stepping up. Ive always like Rob Jackson, but thought his career was over with us when we moved to the 3-4. Physicially he does look a lot more like a linebacker then a d-end, so maybe he has a futre there.
Also what i love most about this is that these young guys are getting a chance to step up. All too often coaches are more concerned to make sure that they keep their job rather then trying to build depth by playing younger guys once the season is over. |

Although I like Armstrong I see him as a 3rd or 4th WR on many teams. Torian seems like a very good find, but again probably a #2/3 guy. So, yea, we need as much depth as possible. |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
I must say very impressed. Certainly a plus in our rebuilding process. Were only gonna get younger.
So far we got 7 draft picks for the 2011 NFL Draft. I think by draft time that count will go up to around 10. 1st 2nd 5th 5th (From Saints in J. Brown trade) 6th 7th 7th (From Colts in Tryon trade) I can see more 2011 draft picks coming from a McNabb trade, Haynesworth trade, and possibly Moss or one of our tight ends in a trade. McNabb would probably go for a 5th rounder (I hope for a 4th but i doubt it. Thats what we gave up for him. His value has certainly decreased since the start of the season). Haynesworth would probably go for a 4th rounder (Hes still a beast, hes just stubborn). As for Moss or the one the tight ends, i see fourth rounders as well. Now just coming to mind, Andre Carter could possibly be traded as well..for 6th rounder or 7th rounder. This would leave us to around 11 draft picks. |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
Kevin Barnes should move to FS and start ahead of Moore next season. Fast, big hitter...CBs can cover better than Safeties usually...and now we know he can catch!
A team is nothing, without a Quarterback. Keep drafting them untill you have one and then you can build your team.
We have so many holes in our starting lineup, just pick the best player available that is not a TE and will be fine. What we really need is just have a few really productive drafts! That is a new concept in DC! A good draft. Wow! Forgot what that was like. Not since the 80's. We are way over-do. We desperately need to build both our lines, we need a stud FS and a few LB's, RB's and WR's. Yes, of course I would love to have the next generation Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, who wouldn't. I am in no way minimizing the need for a young franchise qb of the future. But we won Sb's with Doug Williams and Mark Rypien. IMO fixing the offensive line and getting a stud NT is more important at this time than anything else and will lead to immediate improvement on the field. The odds of drafting the next stud franchise Qb with the 15th pick is very remote. Landing a stud offensive lineman with the 15th pick is easier, given that there are 5 (OL) positions of players to pick from as opposed to one (QB). The pool of players you are picking from is bigger. Plus ceters and guards are not valued and there are usually several really good ones well past the 15th pick. Drafting for need is a dangerous game that leads to reaching for a player that are not worthy. Kind of like a few years ago when we thought our biggest need was tall WR's. :cheeky-sm My school of thought when drafting players when it is your turn to pick and there is nobody there that fits your talent/need equation perfectly, then go big. Statistically, there are less talented big men out there in the world then there regular size people. A stud 6'5" 300 athlete that plays amazing on the football field is harder to fined than a 5'9" to 6'4" 210 pound person/athlete. Just like in the NBA the stud 7' center is hard to find, there are not as many around. |

We really don't have to know how they are going to develop to go down this path. The defense hasn't had much by way of reinforcements added since the 2009 draft, and it's had wholesale changes since then. We need the best performance we can get. |

The problem is that other teams know we don't want Haynesworth anymore. They will most likely wait it out til he's released. AH will not be back w/ the Skins. Possibly the same w/ McNabb. You know he wants to start and it doesn't look like he's in our plans. I'm not sure what we can get. Fred Davis might be our only tradeable piece if we want to trade him. It will be interesting though. |
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
Is Barnes good enough to start at CB or safety? He may need to be.
|
Re: I am Impressed Am Excitied With All The Young Guys Stepping Up This Year
I'd rather see Barnes at FS, he looked awesome there. But, I think he COULD play nickel CB, but I'm not sure he's a starting CB. FS, yes.
His size loses the jump balls and he likes going for the big hit like LaRon. That's better suited for a safety spot. Is Buchanon signed for another year? I could see DHall and Buchanon being our starters unless we really score with a later-round CB draft pick who surprises us. Or, we get Nnamdi. |

Who knows for sure? It's unlikely the team will be able to address every need with top-tier talent through the draft and free agency. The question is who's ready to step it up in a starter role and hold it down? |
