Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I watched the 1st half of the 1pm games today on NFL RedZone (I mean seriously, has there ever been a better channel?). The Skins game was so annoying, so I went to the gym at halftime.
So during my workout I listened to the Redskins radio broadcast with the espn radio app on my phone. I've been mentioning it here and there on this board for a while, but today sent me over the edge with these morons. There are so many epic fails surrounding the Redskins, and their broadcast team is one of them. As Skins fans, we're all used to discussing the possibility of heads rolling within the organization at this time of year. Larry, Sonny, and Sam are downright pathetic. Larry Michael as a play-by-play guy is flat and not descriptive at all. He does such a poor job verbally painting the on-field picture for the listeners. There is no insight whatsoever provided by Sonny and Sam. They don't offer anything of value to a game broadcast. Me and a few of my buddies could without question deliver a better broadcast each week. Sam in particular just sounds like a slurring, drunk old man. I mean today he called a safety blitz a corner blitz and said "whatever" when Sonny corrected him, he doesn't know the rules, he doesn't know the players' names (he refers to Kemoeatu as "koo-ooo"), and when Kellen Winslow caught a TD, Huff said "boy, he's been around a long time, hasn't he?" To which Larry Michael replied, "that's his son." I laughed out loud at least a half a dozen times during the second half. It's embarrassing to have such a pathetic trio broadcasting such a pathetic on-field product. Sonny and Sam were great Redskins to be sure, but they are getting by on that and nothing else right now. Do you agree that this gaggle of idiots should be replaced? And if so, who would you pick to replace them? |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Sam sleeps at least one quarter each game, no joke. He's got to go now.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I stopped listening when Herzog was let go. Larry Michael is simply awful. Sonny is OK but Sam freakin TERRIBLE. I agree, they need to get rid of all three and bring in some new blood there. I'd bring in Joe Theismann and someone besides Michael. Maybe Mike Patrick?

I like Mike Patrick, but Theismann is terrible. He hasn't slipped into senility like Sam, but he's as dumb as a box of rocks. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
change the radio team change the uniforms change the stadium destroy and rebuild NOW!!!!

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I listened to the game on the radio today for the first time in a few years and was floored -- floored-- at the lack of football insight, professionalism, and down right incompetence of that crew. I swear I could walk down any supermarket aisle and grab three random guys wearing football jerseys who would put these dudes to shame.
The Winslow example was one of many. At one point Sam, I believe, called Ryan Torrain a little guy and Sonny tried to correct him and he said, well, he's the same size as Clinton Portis. From there the conversation (while the game is going on, mind you) devolved into comparing John ****ing Riggins to Ryan Torrain. I was like, are these cats playing poker and smoking cigars or calling an NFL football game? Oh, and then D.Hall horse collared the runner and the refs missed it. Sam was like, awe, let him play football. They argued about the horse collar rule. Then like clock work, Sam brought some old ass story from the days of Sammy Baugh or something. I wasn't sure if this was an episode of Family Guy or real live radio. If it weren't so funny, it would be sad. But something actually dawned upon me as I painfully endured the sitcom, this team is strangely cursed by it's historic and successful past. We're constantly trying to relive and re-engineer the Gibbs era. I don't know man. The old Skins alumn are just too visible at times and presents a unique challenge to creating a winning culture in today's NFL. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I only listened to very short excerpts of the radio, but Huff is definitely the most annoying of the bunch.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Yeah anybody who I've ever listened to a game with has without fail commented on these guys - typically we end up laughing about the inane drivel that comes out of their mouths. I cringe every time I realize I'm not going to be able to watch the game and have to listen to these buffoons. I mean, it's almost to the point of "it's so pathetic it's funny" so I don't mind it as much, but god damn, they just make my head hurt...
I swear I could walk down any supermarket aisle and grab three random guys wearing football jerseys who would put these dudes to shame.
You nailed it, my friend |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Can we get a petition going or something?

Mike Patrick and Theismann would be great.... Sonny, Sam, and Larry are straight garbage...unlistenable |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Well......Sam is getting a little long in the tooth...or maybe to many years in the league before a concussion rule?
|
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
12th, I was in the same boat as you. I listened to the whole game and it was painful to hear. To be completely honest I didn't actually mind Larry Michael all that much as far as his play-by-play calling goes but Sam and Sonny are terrible.
Every time Sam says a player is short of a first down you just KNOW that he actually got it by a full yard and vice versa. Sonny sucks too but not nearly as much. I'm all for tradition and whatever but it's time for them to go. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
It's safe to say the show has lost much of it's creativity and luster, some due to ever expanding technology, complacency and a reduced listening audience. May be a refresh is in order.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I find it funny how ( I presume) all the young fans seem to dislike the current announcers and want someone new, but when the radio puts someone new in there all the older fans want Sonny, Sam, Frank.
I think I fall under the older fan.... can we bring back Howard Cosell as our TV anouncer also? |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Sam should have been replaced a few years ago, as he's steadily declined over that period of time. Sonny has been able to keep him in line until this season, when it's been pretty bad. The Redskins respected these 2 gentlemen and kept them together, but I think it's time for both of them to ride off into the sunset. I don't see a future with Sonny and no Sam, so I imagine that this could be their curtain call this season.
Larry Michael is no Frank Herzog, but he's adequate. Just not sure who you would get to replace Sonny and Sam. Is Jake still doing radio work for ESPN 980? I know he was doing post game shows for a while. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I love listening to Sonny Sam and Larry. If my cable wasnt delayed i would watch the game and listen to them call the game, like you used to be able to.
|
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I'm floored at how many of you here actually could have watched the game and choose to do other things and listen to it on the radio. Thats like watching a porn when you could actually be getting laid.
|
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
If Brent Musburger was doing the games I wouldn't even be bothered by how bad we suck. His voice is like Velvet and silk.

Please. Watching this disaster of a team doesn't remotely resemble anything as fun as watching porn or getting laid. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I remember how painful it was to listen to Sonny and Sam before I left the area 5 years ago. I could only imagine how bad it is now.
|
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Back before I had the ticket I would listen to the Skins home feed online and I just never understood why people liked Sonny and Sam so much.
I guess it's the whole nostalgia thing and the fact they've been doing it for so long, I get that. But take the homer factor away and it's a piss poor broadcast team. Larry is fine as a play by play guy, but Sonny & Sam are horrible. But then again most teams radio guys are bad. They're usually ex-players, they're paid by the team, and they just root for the home team. Gets old really quick. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
For awhile I had to listen to their games because I live in New York, but now I just steal the video feed off the web. My biggest complain about these guys isn't just that they're boring or stupid or inept, but that they in fact are constantly WRONG. They will make announcements as to what happened without waiting for the ref; for example they will declare a first down when in fact there wasn't one. They call completions intereceptions and vice versa. During critical moments of the game, they will shout out what they wanted to happen, rather than what actually did, without understanding that their audience isn't watching the game with them and mistook their exclamation as an actual occurance. My wife pointed out that they sound like two people reacting to a game in living room, rather than hired professionals whose first commitment is to the audience. I'm not sure that they understand the concept of a radio audience. Let me rephrase that; they have no understanding of the concept of a radio audience. If I can't steal a good video feed, I will listen to the game (via nfl.com) through the opposing team's announcers.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Maybe it was the year we made a run in the playoffs with Gibbs when Randy Thomas was on IR and he was in the booth with the guys and immediately the radio took on a whole new energy and direction -WHERE IS THAT ?!?!?! but the radio hasnt been insightful nor a pleasure to listen to. We need a more current fresher look IMO. Briing back a beloved ex-skin from my generation Sonny/Sam lost their appeal (I am still mad when Sonny wouldn't acknowledge me wearing a sOnny jersey at an away game).
Personally I think if the radio team doesnt have a voice worth listening to and can't be descriptive with what your seeing than I should have gone to the game b/c its not helping out. It would be nice if they changed it up I want to hear insightful experiences into football, redskins, and want to hear funny/good stories inbetween. Our guys have zero personality.Who knows maybe CP will retire and wants a weekend job. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
We need redskins radio to get better b/c on every network there is a cowboy working for that station and they always overlook the positives and never offer anything unbiased. Unbiased or nonbiased idk
|
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Reading this thread makes me happy I just stick with the tv announcers, even though they did screw up big time yesterday by mistaking the Redskins 4th down as 5th down. I didn't notice that though as I was roughing it out at the game.

Yeah it's like listening to two old guys watching a game at your local bar. They don't give much insight or thought, they're just watching the game and reacting like fans. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Of course when and if Sonny and/or Sam are fired, some moron will say "Look at Snyder, showing no loyalty to Redskins tradition"
Sam Huff needs to go. Now. No question about it. He's beyond awful. |

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I'm sure everybody understands that the guy who will replace them is named Joe Theismann.
|
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I've never had a big problem with Joey T. myself, he would be an upgrade over S&S.
|
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
On a side note does Sonny still hate Theismann's guts? Would be interesting if JT was hired to replace Huff.

That's what the home teams wants, home town announcers that are pulling for their team. If fans want no rooting interest broadcasters just listen to the national guys. I dont think Sam is very good but I think Sonny has some decent insights because he talks to a lot of players. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Personally, I'd like to see Doc Walker and maybe --big maybe-- BMitch give it a shot. But Joey T. would do a good job for sure.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
If the Skins look to make a change in the radio booth I for one would greatly prefer that they use a "two-man booth" and not a "three-man booth".
Sonny is still good with his analysis; Sam and Larry are just awful - - and have been awful for at least the last 5 years. Hey, I have an idea. Hire Vinny Cerrato to do the color commentary. He has experience doing radio... |

I heard Darryl do the sideline reporting for us one year (in the preseason) and from what I remember, he wasn't that good. Smootsmack will probably agree ;) What about Ken Harvey? |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Sonny_J is a keeper, nobody really understands the Redskins Organization better.
Sam Huff, while a cherished Alum, has more negatives than positives. It would be great to have Joe Bugel or Richie Petibone try a guest appearance with Sonny - it would be entertaining. Larry Michael is no Frank Herzog when it comes to play-by-play. |
