The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I know many people here aren't soccer fans. I honestly don't really follow it on a regular basis either.
But this is a major sports event for the next month so....discuss here |

I really don't think this is entirely true anymore |

|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I have a couple of friends who are HUGE soccer fans and they are absolutely pumped for this, they've been talking about it for weeks. I could really care less myself.

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
i am a big soccer fan, and super pumped the world cup is finally here! anyone found a good place that is streaming the games online?
edit: answering my own question. cbs sports has a good stream. if anyone cares. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I'm a world cup fan...go USA/Ivory Coast/Holland. Nothing would be more pleasing if we beat England.
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I've got the South Africa/Mexico game up on the Tres...South Africa's keeper has had a few good saves. Mexico's bending the South Africa defense, but they aren't breaking.
I'm rooting for USA and France. |

Besides South Africa the US sold the most tickets to the world cup so there is a nice fan base there. We care more about other sports be we don't hate soccer. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Mexico got cheated.....that was a blatant goal.

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I graduated from high school with Oguchi Onyewu so I always have to pull for the man! He was this tall skinny kid in high school but now he is a freaking beast. Glad to hear he's healthy now he just needs to kick the crap out of the Brits.

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
ESPN3.com will also give you multiple language feeds, closed captioning, ability to go directly to key plays, picture in picture, fantasy sports, and chat...among other things. Just sayin'
And you don't need to have just Comcast |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
im at work so i am on the company's provider. whatver that is.
the cbs sports ends up taking you to the univision site. the commentary is in spanish, which is fine. makes me feel bad about all the spanish i have already forgotten since college. south africa did a fine job in that draw. they played better than i would have expected. |

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
That's what we have here at work (Comcast Business), so that's why I mentioned it. However, for most of the match, I had no sound. If I wanted to hear commentary, I had to refresh the browser.
Nice opening match, 1-1 draw. Give South Africa a bit of life and pressure Mexico into putting on better matches going forward. |

On the linear network? We don't have Spanish language rights. We have Portuguese language rights on ESPN Deportes, and English, Arabic, Portuguese, Korean, and German on ESPN3.com |

glad they didn't win but yes, they got robbed. clearly not offsides. |

Agreed all around...and I will dance if Ivory Coast beats Brazil. Yay for the World Cup! Luckily it is not in Korea, so no getting up at 5 AM to watch matches. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I'm a big soccer fan and I love the World Cup. U.S. and Argentina are my teams. I almost got killed in 2002 for rooting for the US when we beat Mexico. I was living in Mexico City and watched it in a crowd of about 500 mexicans at a restaurant.
South Africa looked good in the second half once they calmed down. Mexico was technically strong, but just couldn't convert. I think they'll settle down and do well in their next two games. Shame. I love Mexico and the mexican people, but I hate their soccer team. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Why did they decide to hold the World Cup in a bee hive? That seems unfair to people who are allergic to bees.

The U.S. and Argentina are my two favorite teams as well. I guess great minds think alike. |

True, true. Game's about to start. Wish I were at home watching and not at work, but the live stream isn't too bad. |

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Usa! Usa! Usa! Usa!!!!!!
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Yeah this is most excited I've been for a sporting event probably since Florida played Oklahoma in the 2009 BCS title game. Soooo pumped. USA!
Don't tread on me! |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Findley starting over Buddle? Not too sure about that one...
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Mexico got cheated.....that was a blatant goal.
Just to clear up this. You have to have 2 people between you and the goal. The keeper came out for the cross so there was only the defender on the line between the scorer and the goal. Correctly given offside. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Good luck USA, should be a close game and could go either way.
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Oh man I hope Howard is ok. Without him we're done.
This English team could win the whole thing. Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Terry... They're loaded |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Atta boy Dempsey!!
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I'll take a draw all day against that team.

what a howler from green. good result 1-1.
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Man, the US should have won with how many quality shots they had on goal and I was happy to see them try to go for the win. Ingland is done IMO...no defense no goalie no WC Championship.
Germany looked amazing...technically sound and beautiful football. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I thought we played well after the England goal, and I'm not too proud to accept some luck on Dempsey's goal. Particularly satisfied with Gooch's performance given his lack of playing time since his injury.
I don't think England is done, they just showed that they won't be able to win it all with their current goalkeeper. Their defense was pretty solid and only gave up a few chances. They're still a great team. I agree that Germany looked ridiculously good. |

Correctly given offside.
Yeah, little known rule since the GK is almost always the second player. It was funny watching the broadcast live. One of the commentators initially said the Mexicans were robbed of a goal since the South African defender was on the line, but then never said anything similar during later replays. You could tell someone in the booth whispered the rule in his ear and he tried not to bring his mistake to light. |
