Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
So by my count, since Mike Shanahan was hired as coach in January, the Redskins have added 33 players via draft, trade and free agency. Of those, 23 are veterans who spent last season with different NFL teams. That's a lot of a new faces and there are a couple of conclusions we can draw from their additions.

Open competition. I love it!

Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
I just beleive we will be more competitive this season. I can't tell you how many more wins that is yet but we will compete.

Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
We just picked up Joey Galloway, too. That makes WR position very competitive.

Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
The real challenge that now faces Shanahan & co. is to get all these different personalities from different environments to come together and play as a team. Competition at every position should enable this to happen sooner rather than later.

Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
Galloway and Wade better be gone by the time the season starts. We need to give our young talent the chance to be great. I think the No. 2 reciever job is DT's to lose, and i hope MK can step up as well.

Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
Competition is age old, no matter what sport or what era. If you want to be a successful sports franchise you gotta have that. It brings the most out of players and emphasizes players putting in 100% everytime and that's what MS wants and that's what our franchise needs every year.

Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
Competition can only lead to a better program which in turn leads to a better football team.

Glad that Clinton is going to be pushed, though I'm not sure if he realizes that he will need to turn it up. Not sure he could... I mean, every time I read an interview transcript done with him, I wonder if he is trying harder to talk like an idiot or just getting dumber.

i'm pretty curious to see where joey galloway is going to land on this team...
also glad clinton is going to "practice" now. |
Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
No brainer here. Shanny wants guys that can get the job done plain and simple and wants to push the young guys. THey sucked last season. Granted, JC was part of the problem, but our young guys were the crappiest bunch in the NFL in my opinion. Donovan was working with the hottest young WR tandem in the NFL last season. He isn't going to get that with this bunch. If Kelly and Thomas don't up the ante this season, Shanny is going to have to draft a WR in the first two rounds next season.

You keep pimping those Philly WR's, is this what you're in love with? Jackson: 62-1156-9 Maclin: 56-773-4 Avant: 41-587-3 I can think of a bunch of more productive groups than that, nothing wrong with that group don't get me wrong, I just don't get all the love for them. |
Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
I swear. Sometimes to me it feels like the only two positions to get any love from fans are receivers and the people who cover them. Ironic considering that both receivers and corners are the least involved non-special team positions on the field. This is opposed to positions like Centers and Nose Tackles who are involved on every single play.

Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
I was looking over Wades stats and his fumbles and passes dropped are HUGH! I couldn't believe it and it shows that he got worse and worse as his career has gone on. He is supposed to be our next return man... I don't know!

Jackson was in his 2nd year and Mac was a rookie. Kelly and Thomas can't even stiff those numbers. Not saying it's all their fault but when we see other young guys getting it done then it makes me wonder. Hell Crabtree walked off the street and came in contributed right away. I like that we're bringing in some competition at wr. |

He only had eight touchdowns of 50 yards-or-more which tied for an all time NFL league record. Jackson was also the league's top punt returner in 2009 and was second in the league in yards per catch. Yes he finished with only 62 catches, but for 1,156 yards and nine receiving touchdowns. In all, Jackson scored 12 touchdowns last season. Last year, Jackson became the first player in NFL history to be voted to the Pro Bowl at two different positions in the same year - wide receiver and returner. |
Re: Redskins' new faces mean competition for jobs will be intense
I thought I read somewhere that there was a mini camp soon, either this week or next? I guess the coach's will have their plates full trying to decide who stays and who goes by camp time.
Second, there will be be some cuts looming. If you include Carlos Rogers and Rocky McIntosh, plus the six draft picks, the Redskins currently have 88 players. They can only open training camp with 80
It also may stand to reason why they were not all that active in picking up UDFA's. EDIT: Never mind I found it. May 7-9. Found it in your "Key dates to remember." |

I was talking about them as a group. GusFrerotte has been pumping them up a lot lately, I was just saying as a group I don't see where they live up to the hype he was giving them. |

Sure they were more productive, they were in a pass happy offense with an established coach/QB combo. I love Jackson don't get me wrong. |
