Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
I've ranted on many things on this site in my time here, but today an issue occured that reminded me of the many reasons why i hate walmart.
My hometown has been fighting for months against Walmart, specifically that the town does not want the traffic, congestion, and otherwise miserable hell that walmart inflicts on a town when it moves in. Just a rural farming community, we have been protesting for months with signs, bumper stickers, and the like, enouraging people to not vote in the walmart. Obviously we would lose countless family stores and businesses, but our community has a great reputation and does not want the filth and trashiness that Walmarts inevitably bring. This morning, i get the news from my cousin that Walmart has given up on trying to convince the townfolks, and are now going to speak to the local government directly. I know that they will try to buy them off with all the false promises of new jobs and blah blah blah, but i hope morals hold strong and this doesnt happen. Walmart is bad, people, mmkay? And no this isnt a joke thread. this is not my hometown but this gives you an idea of similar measures we have taken...we do have signs on some of the buildings here, though...and actually a few barns. |
Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
Lame. Where there's a need, a business will fill it. There's a reason that company does so well.
|
Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
I respect your argument, and I also agree. But part of that company doing so well was forcing mom and pop stores out of business. I understand that it's the nature of the beast, i'm just complaining because this could personally affect my family and friends at home. For as long as i can remember, we have been peaceful and fine without big businesses here.
We dont want a walmart...we get by just fine and the town stays nice. Besides, there is already one 25 miles away. |

If Walmart thinks they can make money by having a store within 10 miles instead of within 25, then more power to them. They see your community as having a need for one-stop, low-cost retail services. Trust me, plenty of people will prove them right when they pack the parking lot on a Saturday. |

Well this a unique thread idea.

Violence may not be the best option, but it's still an option. Look up chemical moltov cocktail. It's basically sulfuric acid and potassium chlorate. The good thing is that no one will see the bottle being lit, just throw and go. You're not going to win against them any other way. They'll just line the pockets of the local county board, then they'll import cheap sweat shop BS to undercut Americans. I saw the same thing happen in Ashland. Now they want to put one up on a civil war battle field.

Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
I agree with S10 if your man reason for not wanting Wal Mart is because smaller stores will go out of business then you are in the wrong. Those mom and pops can survive they just need to ensure they are priced right and they up their level of service. The mom and pops have the advantage of really giving A plus service where Wal Mart falls short simply becasue of the volume of folks going through that place.
NOW, if you don't want Wal Mart because of the let-knee of other evils they conjure up I can live with that. They are horrible employers and run over seas sweat shops. I personally don't shop there. BTW- This subject matter on here has become kind of a beaten dead horse. |
Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
The proper thread title etiquette for this would have been "F...Walmart"

Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
This is probably one of the slowest offseasons in recent memory. Something is wrong when the hottest topic on the Warpath is about Wal -Marts impact on rural America and small business.
I suppose next week we can float some witches and have an old fashioned book burning followed by a protest of the Devil's music commonly referred to as Rock and Roll. |

I'm all for capitalism. However, the reason why Walmart does so well is they underpay employees and put the sqeeze on-threaten manufacturers to lower prices. They've historically cut corners in HR and safety to save a buck. Now, like i said i'm all for capitalism, but I'm also all for residents attempting to keep them out of their towns. How much should one make for neatly stacking tin cans? By the way, I worked at the local Walmart in my early years. |

Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
like the argument with the chicken and the egg. is it better to have NO job, or work at Walmart, with crappy benefits and small pay?

Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
Walmart's slogan is Save Money, Live Better. While some see a Walmart moving into their town as a intrusion others view it as a life line. Poorer people cant shop at Mom and Pop stores because they cost too much and because taking a bus to multiple stores around town and walking miles to get everything they need will erode their weekends. Walmart also provides tons of jobs for people who would otherwise struggle to find continues work. It may not be someplace where you may be willing to work but it’s a opportunity for a less fortunate person.
People shop at Walmart for its convince, but also to save money and in turn increase their quality of life. Why shouldn’t poor people be able to afford nice things too? |

Basically, they've got a bad rep as a boss.
Then apply somewhere else. Some people just need to work, period. Beggers can't be choosers. Besides, most of their employees are kids who need gas/cellphone cash, retired people looking for something to do in their free time or people who can barely speak English. Retail stores are not meant to be careers nor should anyone expect benefits from them. In college, I worked in a nice hotel without ANY insurance or benefits beyond a discount and free coffee. I worked hard and made myself better and got what I wanted from an employer. If I lost my jobs and could only get a job temporaily at Walmart (hope this NEVER happens), I wouldn't be whining about benefits, I'd work to get myself out of there. I have no issue with the store paying whatever they can or need to to get positions filled, it is how they keep the costs down. If the workers want better benefits, the company will have to take it out of their pay or get rid of some of them from the increased prices and lower revenue. |

I know several older people who work at Sears and made decent money and had a nice pension plan. Then stores like WM and Kmart opened up and started expanding all this changed. These stores only hired part time people so they could sell items much cheaper so places like Sears and JCP almost went belly up back in the 80's. Now look at the people working at these two stores and you will see they now offer fewer benfits and hire the cheaper part time workers so WM and Kmart really changed the retail business. |

I've heard friends of mine tell me that exact same thing. My ex girlfriend's mother worked at JC Penny's for 18 years as a cashier...no promotions or anything, but she did have benefits and a steady full-time job. Now you are exactly right. Stores would rather staff with strictly low paid part-timers than have to pay people for 40 hours + benefits. |

You can't solely blame the stores, in general, it takes more money to survive. The days of single-income families are long gone. |
Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
I don't see WalMart as a bad thing. Head on down to Warrenton to check out a nice WalMart. Warrenton's small mom-and-pop stores are thriving alongside it. It's not one of those super WalMarts, but just one of the small, normal(?) sized ones. It's never super crowded (I hate crowds) and it doesn't feel like some sort of industrial monstrosity like some of the bigger ones do. I can honestly say that the Warrenton WalMart has not brought any trash or filth to the town. It's been there for probably 10 years now.
If WalMart wants to come to Stephens City, it probably will. My advice would be to try and find a middle ground with the corporation. See if they will build a small store. Propose that they construct the building so that it will fit in architecturally. |
Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
Wal-Mart blows...wouldn't want that piece of shit store in my neighborhood not that they could anyways. Good look fighting those parasitic SOBs.

Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
SolidSnake, I actually spent half my youth in your area (went to Aylor for Jr. High, then Sherando for HS). I thought there was already a 24-hr Walmart in the area? I remember having to spend weekend nights there, as the teen center was ridiculously lame (as well as barn parties). I hear they're bringing a Best Buy to Winchester, also.
|
Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
Lol Guys, sorry i didn't point out that the walmart isn't coming to Stephens Shitty.
It's actually supposed to go to Atmore, Alabama. They have one 25 miles away in Flomaton. And Best Buy is coming to Winchester. They also have an HHGREGG that took the place of Circuit City. Hope that clears things up. God I would hate for Stephens City to get one. Seeing as how Winchester is supposed to get a 3rd Walmart by the end of 2011, that would make 5 walmarts within 15 minutes of our house. (3 in winchester, 1 in Front Royal, 1 in Stephens City if they get one lol). |

Thought maybe it had to do with it being right off 81 or something. |
Re: Solid Snake Hates: Walmart
After spending the last four years living in a Wal-Mart-less country, in which you have to go to like five stores just to do normal shopping, I have come to appreciate Wal-Mart a lot more than I used to.
