Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
I mean besides being at the Skins' next SB Game.
I was watching Monday Night Football and just enjoying the whole Brady/Manning competition when it occurred to me that these two players have created a real legacy that 20-30 years from now will be part of sports mythology and I am getting the opportunity to watch it as it happens. I am sure there will come a day when I tell my kid "Yeah, they're good but you should've seen Brady/Manning - now that was a rivalrly." I am just wondering what sports mythos others have witnessed or what part of the current sports you watch will become part of sports mythology? |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
They played again last night? LOL

Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
bird/magic
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
seems like we have had our share. Jordan, Bird and Magic. Tiger Woods. Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice. the steroid in baseball scandal. McGwire vs. Sosa. Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Ray Bourque

Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Not to knock Manning and brady but with today's rules i dont hold them in as high of a regard as i do Marino,Montana,Moon and Elway. These guys had to fit their passes into small windows as their wrs were being all but undressed in the secondaries. Back then as a wr going across the middle you knew you were gonna get drilled, this 5 yd BS away from the play makes me sick. 3rd and 17 and you get a 1st because the defender touched the wr on the opposite side of the field of where the QB was looking. AAHHH!! sorry for the rant.

Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Yes, watching Jordan was awesome.
Dont forget about BARRY SANDERS!! |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
I have a kid and she hates sports, so nothing I guess. But she's well aware of me being a Skins fan.

Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Monday Night Miracle in Dallas. That game was great.
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
My son asked me last night why I had a baby picture of him in Redskin gear. Oh how badly I have failed
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Nice thread. Lots of good moments to choose from. I'd probably tell my kids about some Tiger moments, the 2008 Nadal vs. Federer Wimbledon Final...wait are we talking moments or rivalries?

what a magical moment that was. |

its ok, it happens. My son likes the LSU Tigers and i am a die hard Gator fan. But my Daughter who is 6 came up to me and asked if she could have a Gator cake for her bday party. I almost dripped a few. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Tiger. Plain and simple he is the one that someday we'll be saying..."Man you wouldn't believe how good this guy was." It goes basically Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods. Everyone else is just garnish.
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Moss at Dallas in front of the new Ring inducties was classic.
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Yep, the Moss miracle game and also the Sean Taylor recovery/Nick Novak game winner against Dallas. I have never jumped so high before in my life! :D
Also, SB XXII was the first SB I watched. That one is one of the best SB performance of all time, let alone in Skins history. The '91 season where we were 11-0 and dominating everyone. In basketball, MJ's game-winner vs. Utah. MJ's game with the flu was incredible. Pippen had to help him walk off the court afterwards. Jordan provided so many thrilling moments. His 3 vs. Portland in the finals. Also, the games where Paxson and Kerr hit game-winners in the Finals. I saw so many of his crushing Cleveland shots too, and the games vs. the Knicks where there was so much hatred and hard play. This season's WS was great to watch, even as a non-Yankees fan. To open another Yankee Stadium with a dominating WS win is going to be historic. Also in baseball, watching Mike Schmidt smack home runs back when baseball was still pure and untainted. Nolan Ryan's no-hitters. So many sports memories so far in my lifetime. |

Both really. The Manning/Brady thing just struck me. I mean, either one would be great without the other but, b/c the stars aligned properly, they end up playing each other often and in big time games which, in turn, only heightens both their legends a' la Bird/Magic. I remember those Bird/Magic games. Man they were epic. Did you know that Bird never missed a shot and that Magic could pass the ball without even touching it? No one could guard either of them and, in game 7 of the 1984 NBA Finals, they collided in mid court and Michael Jordan sprang up from the ground where they hit. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
I would have to say Tiger also. As someone said, he is so far above the field. Same with Jordan.
I guess what I was really looking for was stuff that, when you tell your teenage/young adult kids, they say "Wow! was it really as good as everybody says". The stuff the enters the cultural mythos as opposed to just the "Skins Fan" mythos. But, hey, it's all good. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Randall Cunningham was on the enemy Eagles, but I loved watching him play.
[YT]AdjmMa88l-o[/YT] I remember seeing Randall Cunningham's 90-yard punt live too. :D [YT]OQKHOMHKT00[/YT] |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Aside from the heyday of the Skins, I grew up in the Era of QBs that had all kinds of passing records when the league was run-first (Montana, Elway, Marino, Moon). I also had guys like Gretsky, Jordan, Bo Jackson, Tiger Woods, who each changed the way we look at their respective sport(s).
Then there is Iron Cal, who will always been known for his solid work ethic as 2632 will never be broken, but also revolutionized a position that was mainly taken up by weak hitting guys under 6 foot tall (Cal had 400 HRs and 3000 Hits in his career, 1 of 8 players to do so to go with 2 Gold Gloves). |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Wow, forgot about Ripken!

Failing was my wife dressing our daughter up in a skins cheerleading uniform for a party this Holloween. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Being only 23 and only having actually followed sports the past 7 years or so, I don't think I've really had a bunch of sports moment memories yet. The Redskins haven't won a superbowl since the 90's and I wasn't old enough to care then. The Orioles suck as do the Wizards again. So current DC sports lore is out of the question. I mean it was kinda cool that Jordan played for the Wizards for those handful of months but it wasn't like he was the Jordan of old, in his prime. So what's the point?
Hopefully the area teams get better within the next 10 years so I actually do have amazing stories to tell them when I have em. |

If my son/daughter liked boxing I would have to tell him/her about how dominant Mike Tyson was in his prime and the same for NASCAR and Jimmie Johnson right now. And of course I'd have to tell them about Ovechkin and Ovie v. Crosby |
And of course I'd have to tell them about Ovechkin and Ovie v. Crosby
I was lucky enough to be at game 2 vs the Pens last year and that is an experience I'll be talking about for a long time.

It sucked if you got anything over like the third round but I did win once in like the 6th round. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
im probably 10 years old. caps down to the flyers 3-1 in the playoff series. caps come back to force a game 7. flyers go up big, something like 5-2. the caps fight back, score 2 goals in the closing minutes with dale hunter getting a scrum goal to force OT with seconds left in a pile of players in ron hextalls crease.
OT, larry murphy slips a pass to a breakin dale hunter in open ice. he skates in alone, gives hextall alil shoulder dip then goes to the back hand and slides the puck underneath hextall. crowd goes absolutely bonkers! hextall lays motionless on his back with half his body in the net. best moment ever besides my 3 goals against duquesne to seal a rare win for my college lacrosse team. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Yeah its weird how things change, Iron Mike went from the best heavyweight we have seen in decades to a guy who bites off ears and tattoo's his face.
Michael jackson went from the king of pop to a ..... well i wont say it. but he was the man until it all went downhill for him. OJ, uuhh nevermind. :) I thought this was interesting. The role of the Terminator was originally going to be portrayed by O. J. Simpson. But, according to (James) Cameron in 1984, "people wouldn't have believed a nice guy like O. J. playing the part of a ruthless killer." Again its crazy how things change. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
What will I tell my son. I'll tell him about everything that I can remember as long as he is interested. He will know about everything Redskins. The good and the bad as well as the consequences of going against the Redskins gene in his DNA. I don't know everything to list, but whatever comes to mind. I'll eb the old guy who when he brings up some great QB I'll tell him about Marino, Montana, Elway, Cunningham, whoever. I just can't wait to have these talks with him.
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
i wont tell my kids about those but it just came to mind hearing about Mike and it just snowballed from there.
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Player wise Ill tell my kids about the guys like Marino,Montana,Deion,Barry,Rice,Monk,D.Green -GO SKINS- Manning,Brady, and other guys who made the game what it is today.
and yes ill also tell them about Tebow-college- GO GATORS |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Celtics absolute DESTRUCTION of the Lakers to win the Championship in '07-'08. Outside of the Skins SB wins I can't remember a more enjoyable win.
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Since I'm a young gun there haven't been as many moments for me as some of the elders here but I can think of a few off the top of my head I'd tell my kid about when the time is right.
Manning/Brady aka Colts/Pats rivalry Monday Night Miracle, with Sean Taylor's game clinching hit at the end still in vivid detail. Tiger Woods, even though I'm still not much of a golf fan. Alexander Ovechkin, even though where he stands amongst the legends of hockey still hasn't been noted mainly due to not enough seasons (aka i'll be telling my son, "back in my day before Ovie was finishing up his career, he scored goals like it was nothing. Check this youtube clip of the most amazing goal I've ever seen, it was against Phoenix way back in the day when his legend was just getting established. ) That's the ones for now. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
The Matt Bradley story from last night seems like a good place to start
|
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
Other Sports: Aaron Boone walkoff to win the ALCS for the Yankees, Probaboly the Miami vs Ohio State National Title Game, Same goes for USC/Texas and USC Notre Dame regular season from 05 (?), Syracuse winning the national championship in 2003...
Quite a few golf moments too, actually, Tiger at the Masters in 05, US Open vs Rocco last year, Phil winning his first major... Probaboly Chris $*#& Drury beating the Rangers with 2 seconds left in the playoffs in 2007....he's on the team now and I still can't let that one slide.... Also the Palace Brawl from 2004 In the NFL: For the Skins: Monday Night Miracle, FG Block vs Dallas, Giants winning the Super Bowl, Music City Miracle...and probaboly Mike $#&@ Allstott ruining my dream day Skins/Bucs in 05. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
I may tell them about this

[YT]WXnLrMvh1hA[/YT]
What a douche that guy was. I am glad he was getting his ass handed to him. |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
I could think of at least half dozen Redskins moments, some of which have already been mentioned.
In terms of other sports, I think Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas has to be --has to be-- like top 5. The ultimate upset. It was the beginning of the end for Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas hasn't been heard from since. For me it was the most memorable boxing match ever. |

fractured my hand that damn day, no way he was in i know in 10 years i know we will all be talking about ov8 he is amazing to watch i'm surprised that king james hasn't come up yet, he could be the greatest by the time he is done and no love for shaq, stories of that guy will go on forever the best thing is i have seen all three of these guys play in person and they are so much better than anyone around them |
Re: Sports Moments You Will Tell Your Kids
