Slingin Sammy 33's - Unforgiven
 

Continuing with the Eastwood western theme....
There is no "Man on the Wihte Horse" to come save us. There's also no one single "bad guy" to blame for our current situation.

Positives:
- Thank God for Hunter Smith and his 45.8 avg.
- First offensive drive, up until 2 & GL from the 9.
- Rinehart, struggled a little early but settled down and played solid.
- OL Pass-pro overall solid. For the most part JC had time to throw or lanes to step up in.
- Great play call on TD play to Moss
- Still like the Cobra and Nickel personnel with 98 at RDE.
- 92 & 98 get sacks this week on great individual effort.

Negatives:
- Lack of creativity in the run game. You cannot have 12 rushes by Portis and have 7 of them be the same play (R or L was balanced though).
- Red-Zone playcalls (although we weren't there but once when Detroit wasn't in a Prevent). The fade on 1st down is fine. 2nd down delay draw...ugh. 3rd down screen, inside the 8...don't like the call, but it went for 7 yds. 4th down OL steps laterally with a G pull ????? How about line up and run an ISO between 60 & 66. D overloads left, audible to your strength on the right.
- Receivers not finding the 1st down marker. Moss & Cooley (vets) both killed drives in the first half because of this.
- Without Haynesworth the DL isn't very good.
- Carter, making mistakes in keeping contain.
- Carter overall did not play real well.
- I know Haynesworth is about 6'5", but he tackles too high at times.
- Smoot in Man coverage is a liability, nothing new to report here.
- DL must do a better job of clogging things up and keeping the OL from getting to the second level.
- Fletcher, on the rare occasion he is allowed to blitz, seems tentative is finding/hitting the gap.

- Orakpo making a costly rookie mistake on 3-13 (Stafford run). A stunt is called with 92 & 98. 92 goes outside and 98 should slide right behind him into the open gap. The LG picks up the stunt and 98 keeps going down the line laterally, opeing up a huge lane for Stafford. 98 must stay in his rush lane, rookie mistake.

Unforgivables:
- Jason Campbell's ball handling skills. 1 mishandled shotgun snap, 2 UUUUGLY fumbles. This cannot continue. If either one of the fumbles ins't recovered it's disaster.
- JC's reads and decision-making this week were poor. 2 throws into double coverage, 1 dropped INT and 1 INT. This also cannot continue. Without a couple of lucky bounces and a dropped INT. Campbell could've been the cause of 4 turnovers. Figure best case, 13 points off them and we lose 32-14.
- DTs getting offside penalties. The ball is less than 3 ft. from your face, how do you jump offsides????
- Carlos Rogers' ball skills. On the TD and at least one other play that was overthrown, he's got the WR covered, he makes the turn to play the ball and gets lost.
- 154 yds rushing allowed.
- 51% 3rd down percentage for opposing offenses through 3 games (last in NFL)
- Finally and most importantly....Blache's defensive playcalls. What we saw here is back to the same things we saw in Week 1 and through much of the season last year. Our defense is very predictable. Landry is 15 yds deep and of 80% of the time it's Cover-1 Man. Two safeties and unless it's +10 or more it's Cover 2 Zone. Cover 2 Zone can also be read by Fletch's drop. If he's 7 yds deep it's C-2 Zone. I counted less than 10% of total defensive plays as blitzes.
This is the NFL, you cannot stay in a vanilla front and coverage and not expect to get gashed like we did against the Lions. Our DL pressure wasn't awful, they didn't get man-handled for the most part. Stafford had the ball out in 2.5 to 3 seconds. Why, because his pre-reads stayed correct and he knew where to go with the ball. What will an Eli Manning later in the season, Brees, Ryan, and Rivers do to this type of D? They'll probably throw for 350+.
Why did we give up 154 yds on the ground, not becuase the players are soft, but because the OL knows exactly who/where to block and there is no confusion or uncertainty created for the OL. Blache is either completely not creative, set in his ways, lazy or all three. It isn't rocket science to come up with Zone Blitz schemes, change DL fronts, etc. Hell, we play the Giants and Eagles twice a year and their DCs are/were great at this.
All the NFL teams have full field film (even ESPN has that), additonal staff, and hours upon hours to break it down. If a guy with a DVR, a TV view, and three hours can see this stuff, what are guys who get paid 6-7 figures to win football games going to do? They're going to destroy this defense all year long.

As Paintrain said, "So What Now". Here's what my recommendations are:
1) Fire Blache now. He is a known quantity, he isn't going to change. He was going to retire two years ago. Promote either Olivadotti or Gray whoever is more capable of designing and calling an aggressive, attacking defense that makes the QB question his pre-reads and makes the OL have to question their assignments.
2) Orakpo needs to move to RDE now. Orakpo can be a game changer from that position, not at LB. Move Carter to LB or into the rotation at LDE.
3) Activate Barnes and get him on the field in man coverage situations. Get Tryon on the field more also. The only time Smoot should see the field is playing some sort of short zone.
4) Use more run plays that are primarily straight ahead and make the blocking assignments easier than the stretch. Call straight ahead power runs inside the 5 yd line not the finesse crap. Put in some counters & traps from the Gun
5) On O, Let the young guys play (DT, Kelly, Davis) and don't protect them with play selection. We need to see what we've got going forward, especially with JC. He needs to succeed or fail this season.
6) Long term if we can get Holmgren, make the deal. Give the guy control as GM. If it doesn't work out, start interviewing now (and take plenty of time to find the right guy) so an experienced GM or seasoned coach/GM can step in to the GM role and make all football decisions.

Sounds pretty good.. Especially Barnes part, I'm disappointed that he's not playing at all.. We can try put him in when using man to man plays.. Teach him to be aggressive, as well (he still needs to bulk up too).. I'm also disappointed that we haven't thrown balls to young guys.. Fred obviously has talents and speed.. Kelly and Mitchell with nice size and soft hands.. Thomas, his athleticism and speed I guess.. We activated Alridge last game at Lions, and we didn't even use him? Damn son, Zorn needs learn how to play around with the players and trying to find the magic..

Shut up! It's harder then you think. It's really tough especially when you're an undersized Nose Tackle that really should be playing Defensive End or Weakside Linebacker.

Very good information and observations of the Redskins. I agree we need to stop protecting our 2nd year weapons ( DT,FD,MK) and let them sink or swim now. Davis did make a catch and he was really motivated. He needs to get more involved in the offense. How about getting WR screens pass plays to DT and Kelly. They have to get them the ball to use their athletic ability.

Hunter Smith has been simply awesome. More so than the distance of his punts is his directional ability. I think back still to the Giants game when he dropped that punt perfectly on the one hard line but Westrbrook wiffed on it and it bounced into the end zone for a touchback

Nailed it here. Especially point one. If we are going to start letting heads roll lets start with Blache and see where that goes. Much easier than trying to start all over from the top, which they still might have to do, but at least not mid-season. Not sure I want a coach/GM, Holmgren was much better when he had good personnel men backing him, but otherwise I would be completely on board with that prescription.

And you can't play corner in this league if you don't know the flight of the ball. Some passes he easily could intercept if he knew where the ball was.

Thanks GTripp. When you do your review, take a look at Heyer. He's catching a lot of flack, but I just looked back tonight and watched him specifically. Outside of the first series, when he got beat badly and didn't come out of his stance (missed the snap), then came back and jumped on the next play, he was pretty solid. Only one play that he really got beat on was the split back hand-off to Portis. The two big Portis runs were also from his side.
I would like to see him more aggressive in pass-pro, but his footwork still isn't where it should be and it appears he's a bit tentative to punch too hard, reach and get off balance. Overall he's a solid RT, not a Pro Bowler but he's getting the job done. He and Rinehart could develop into a real force that could be together for a bunch of years if their footwork and technique improves a bit. Both are big strong guys and seem to be working hard.

Can anybody really understand why Blache still has his job? I think w/o question this year's defense is more talented yet the group has regressed markedly...I think we're 15th overall and 22nd against the run. That is an embarrassment especially since our defense is so geared toward stopping the run w/ Daniels at LDE and phat Al in the middle. Bottom line is it falls on Blache to put the pieces together and make the group better than it was the year before. He seems to be failing miserably. Why not let the most talented defensive assistant takeover for the rest of the season? Blache would be gone after this year anyway...

Great post, I agree with it for the most part. The only thing I'm not in agreement with is JC's ball handling skills.

On the first fumble (first play of the game I think), the ball was snapped high and he had to jump to corral it. I don't think that's his fault. On the second fumble (the one where he was trying to pass it and the ball just slipped out of his hands and fell to the turf) well that one can be chalked up to just a slight mistake of not gripping the ball. Maybe it slid out of his hand for all we know. Either way I don't think that's indictive of a huge fumbling problem.

Lots of good tidbits in here Sammy, thanks for the review. I pretty much wholeheartedly agree. I don't know if Blache is doing this so that the O can't kill us if we get too aggressive, but we definitely need turnovers and defensive scores if we want to win.

Regardless, you can't do the second one.. the first one was indeed a pretty high snap.

Heyer was a good player in college at Maryland. I think that he would have had a chance to be drafted if he hadn't suffered a series of injuries that kept him off the field.

His main deficiency is his serious lack of foot speed. I mean, the guy is s-l-o-w. But he's a competitor.

If he's a little too focused on technique at he expense of aggressiveness right now, I think I can understand why. He's a smart guy and I'm sure he knows that he needs to make up for his relative lack of speed and quickness with good technique. Once he gets his technique down, I think he'll be able to be more aggressive.

I don't know much about Rinehart except that he seems to have improved quite a bit. From what I've read about him, he seems to be motivated to succeed.

The Redskins coaches need to decide if Heyer and Rinehart are their guys on the right side of the OL. If so, then they need to keep them together on the field so they can continue to get better at working as a tandem.

From what little I know, That is a huge part of it. IF they are capable, and IF they both stay healthy I think time together in live games will help them forge a solid right side of the line. I realize those are big ifs, but I am now looking at this season as the forging season. Let's see what youth we really have. If they can come together, we will see a better team in the second half of our season. That would be a good thing :)

Rabach's shotgun snaps haven't been the best this year. He seems to be all over the place and often puts too much mustard on it.
