Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
Who: Washington Redskins @ Detroit Lions
What: Game 3 of the 2009 regular season When: Sunday, September 27 at 1 PM ET Where: Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan When Detroit Has the Ball The Lions were able to run for over 120 yards last week against a stout Vikings defense, so establishing a ground game to control the clock and protect their rookie QB will be a top priority for Detroit. TB Kevin Smith is a tough runner between the tackles who can get yards after the cutback so the Redskins should see a steady dose of that all day. The Redskins need to limit the Lions on first down, forcing Detroit to turn to Matt Stafford in obvious passing situations. That's when the Redskins will have a chance for sacks and turnovers. DT Albert Haynesworth and DT Cornelius Griffin are playing well so far this season and running between the tackles on the Redskins won't be easy.
Read it all. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
I added this to the Alridge thread but some probably don't care to go there anymore so I'll add it here. CP is questionable for Sun. I presume he will play but I bet his roll will be limited. ...

If Aldridge is active on Sunday, I think the Skins will use him. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
They better use Alridge. He's got skills no one else on the team has.

Fumbling? |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
i don't know about that. Betts can fumble with the best of them:)

so can Sellers

Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
Betts and Portis split carries. Both run to the left about 10 times each. Redskins win 17-10.

Wow. I can't say anything. Your personal feelings toward Alridge are like mine toward Rock. So, I guess I'll just not say a thing. :) |

I played basketball with a guy that had to deal with bone spurs. He dealt with it for a year and could barely walk at times. Then he had surgery, but he was never the same player that he was when he first came in before the bone spurs started bothering him. This makes me nervous. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
Spence, your preview was brutal! You seem to be fed up with this team. I hope you haven’t gotten caught up in the mob mentality of some of the fans at FedEx Field. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen Redskins Nation so ready to get out the pitchforks and torches – after a win, at that!
Look at this stuff: The Lions should load up against the run, trying to make the Redskins one dimensional and force them to the air, where they haven't been able to make big plays for...years. Anthony Aldridge, a speed burner who can go all the way or cough up the rock at any time. Jason Campbell played well last week, but the only receiver who was open and not dropping the ball was TE Chris Cooley. The Redskins don't have the skill or discipline to work their way down the field patiently for touchdowns so taking away the big play works. Malcolm Kelly or Devin Thomas must do what they have never done -- play like a real starting wide receiver. If one can do that, this game should be a blowout. If, as usual, they fail to show up and do much, the game should be relatively close. The Redskins are ripe for a mauling, but the Lions are not the team to do it. They don't have the talent or experience. Whew! I can’t imagine how rough things could get if the Redskins were to lose to Detroit. |

I think the statement about working their way down the field is a bit off, but that can be truthful if down the field was replaced with red zone. Other than that, the rest of the statement have validity to them. The first one if the God's honest truth. Many teams that do beat us figure that one out by loading up to stop Portis and forcing the Redskins to throw while doubling up Moss. |

Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
With fans like some of you who needs Dallas fans to bash the team. It also seem to come from alot of people with low post count. Heck, I stopped to have a few beers on the way home and while talking foot ball to a few friends Dallas & Philly fan they talked better about the skins then some people posting here.

Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
Cooley's gonna have a huge day. 115 yds with 2 tds. add on a fg and u have the skins score.
Skins - 17 Lions - 13 |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
Malcom Jamal Kelly will get his first TD.

I definitely agree. I think it might be youth also. Some of us that are a little older remember the golden years so we have a lot more respect for our team. Because we have enjoyed the spoils of victory and some of these younger posters haven't seen anything to make them cheer. Understandable. But if you are going to be a Skins fan be a die hard skins fan. |

I can at least see that happening. Some of these blowout predictions are just outrageous. I can at least see this taking place this week. Kelly has just as many yards as Moss so far. That'd also be a motivating factor with the team if they saw some success with their 2nd year player. That should probably be an objective this Sunday since we are playing a weak team...it'd give the team some momentum. |

Portis questionable with bone spurs | Washington Examiner
Bringing Alridge back definitely tells me something about Portis' ankles. Bone spurs suck. It's think he'll be able to make a full recovery from it, but I think this may be the point where we start to see some decline from him. He's played in 34 straight games, and he's taken a pounding since becoming a Redskin. He's an old 28 and has a ton of career carries. Maybe Mason and Alridge represent a youth movement that culminates with the Skins maybe drafting Portis' replacement next year. I understand my contensions could be premature, but we all know Portis hasn't been very explosive for a while. And we all know how RBs fall off so fast these days. Three guys who were all in their prime in the previous few seasons are struggling right now- LT, Westbrook, CP. It's early in the season, and none of them have really bad injuries, but it makes me wonder for sure. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
Prediction: Boring game to watch and more excuses why we didn't play well. Tight game, but Skins win 17-16.

Ha! I'm going to start calling him Theo |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
I think this game is going to look more like we did at the beginning of last year. I HEAVY dose of running, wearing them down then eating big chunks of yards and clock in the 4th quarter. Zorn isn't going to want to turn the ball over throwing against the Lions, especially since Reinhart is playing guard. He wont want to put him in a ton of pass blocking schemes since its easier to learn the running plays. My opinion, we will see a ton of Portis left, right, middle(if he plays) and Betts. I like to see what they will do with Aldridge. He has the same skill set as Sproles in San Diego.

The negative is a breeding ground for some. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
I don't think it will be a blowout, but I do think the Skins will win. I think we have a better chance of blowing out the Panthers, Chiefs or Broncos later in the season. The Lions just aren't as bad as they were last year but until they put two halves together people won't realize that. If we get the team that played the first half last week for a whole game, it will likely be another 9-7 victory.

He needs to wake the hell up. So far he's been a complete dud. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
Redskins finally win by 35 points against a crappy Lions team.
If the Redskins lose I'll be suffering the worst bout of Tourette's combined with Asperger's syndrome ever witnessed. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
Prediction.
Skins win 2-0. Cmon folks...any prediction of any blowout is crazy. Lets see...how many points can the Skins under Zorn score...especially over the last half season after teams have film on him....uh....the teens....as simple as that. The Lions suck..so...maybe low 20s....I'd be shocked if it was any more. Regarding the Lions...they suck...so...uh....like 10 or so...oh yeah...throw in the fact that we never win by more than a touchdown....we need to tighten that up a bit...maybe Skins win 20-13...that sounds about right for a Zorn victory over a crappy team. The Skins are one of the most predicable teams in the NFL. I hope you guys slam the crap outta me if the Skins score 30+ points...I'd gladly take the beating. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
As someone who probably represents the youth. I find it offensive that you would question my fan hood and my knowledge on the team. I understand the situation of our current team. And I'm very aware of the prior success of this franchise.

I think the comment above was not meant to disparage all young Skins fans. I think it was aimed at one or two specific people. Heck, when I had no beard and all of my hair, I was as rabid for the Skins as anyone. There's nothing wrong with youthful fans. Keep the faith! HTTR! |

Unfortunately with the help of the media, fans who love to focus on the negative, and an owner who may be reverting to his pre-Gibbs ways, this is a pivotal game. |

http://www.thewarpath.net/redskins-locker-room/32068-only-two-good-decisions-jim-zorn.html#post593770
I guess you are talking about Zorn's end of year hotseat last year, and if that's the case, it would be a real bad thing. For me, I just can't believe that Snyder didn't have at least a 2 year window when bringing in a rookie coach. and I can't see him firing Zorn mid season. I agree that if he goes back to the Danny of old, we will a long season of discontent. But I honestly believe, and I'm not putting you in this group Sammy, too many fans out there want to believe the worst in Snyder, and not give him credit for significant changes in behavior that he has made. I think he has set the team up well, even in the sense that if JC/Zorn don't pan out this year, then we drop the trifecta of VC/JZ/JC and we start fresh with a new front office and a strong Defense. But I also don't think it will come to that, and that this team and coach have the ability to be in every game until the clock expires. I also believe we will win more than we lose. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
My biggest concern is Calvin Johnson who has a couple of inches on Hall. I'm confident our rushing defense will be able to contain Kevin Smith. Which hopefully will apply pressure on Matt Stafford to beat us through the air. A rookie QB against our stout defense is our advantage.
On offense, the match up is favorable for us. The Detroit Lions are ranked 27th in total defense. 24th against the pass, and 22nd against the run. I expect Campbell to be able to sit in the pocket comfortably and just unleash. I feel Campbell has more confidence in the shotgun formation. And hopefully Zorn will let him operate from there more often. Redskins shouldn't have any trouble driving down the field, and I expect more aggressive play calling in the red zone. Campbell should be able to distribute the ball to everyone, and Portis galloping over 100 yards and his first TD of the season. Redskins 20 Lions 14 |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
After seeing Tebow get taken out of the stadium in an ambulance, the only thing that could make my weekend worse would be a loss to Detroit. I'm really hoping we come out sharp.
I'm looking for a shutdown performance from our defense, complete with a handful of sacks and a few turnovers. |
Re: Game Preview: Redskins @ Lions
here's hoping that TB wins, and we destroy Detroit.
