Any UVA football fans here?
For those that have the courage to admit it, that is?
What the hell has happened to that team? They lost to William & Mary yesterday. Last season they managed to lose to Duke, and the year before that they lost to Wyoming. We all know it's hard to get into UVA. But it was the same way under George Welsh and they were far more relevant then. So is this all on Al Groh? I thought he was a good coach, but man do they underachieve with this guy or what? I'm thinking they either need to drop their status to Division I-AA or loosen those academic restrictions for athletes. If they're not careful they'll replace Duke as the official doormats of the ACC. And don't even tell me there's a rivalry between the 'Hoos and Tech. The Hokies took Alabama down to the wire last night. They're not in the same class as Tech. Right now this is just embarassing. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
They should of canned Groh 2 years ago. I root for UVA because it was the first ever football game my dad took me to but they are not good. Knowing that I never have high hopes for them thats for sure. They may not wwin a game all season.

Re: Any UVA football fans here?
Yeah, I wonder about Groh too -- but just like with pro football the general manager and front office have to take some of the blame, in college the athletic director deserves scrutiny too.
The program from the top down has really regressed. That said, the Cavs always seem to start slow and finish respectable, but for Pete's sake you can't lose to W&M at home. |

Pretty ridiculous when you lose to W&M. Ive been saying for 2 years know they need a change in the head coaching position. Maybe now they'll do something. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
Yeah, you can't lose to W&M at home. They are a good team but you can't let that happen if you are UVA. It's a little embarrasing. Some things that Al Groh does I respect. His teams fight hard and never give up generally. You're right too, that it would be just like an Al Groh team to pick themselves up and make it a respectable season. I just can't take up for him when he's got 3 starting qb's. Pick 2 Al and go. Verica is not a starting Qb.
I think UVA needs a change though. I'd welcome it. They need someone like a Paul Johnson (Ga Tech now). Someone who has an innovative system and who can implement it. It's already ugly in C-ville, and it could get very ugly. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
Al Groh should have been fired a few years ago. He's terrible.
|
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
groh must go. Been saying that since 05. I actually just graduated this last May. Let me just say, after my first year I was almost always blackout drunk during games. There were not fun to be at in a sober state of mind.
But there are other great academic schools which have good football teams too. At some point the coaching is the issue. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
Craig Littlepaige shares quite a bit of blame too. Groh is actually a pretty good coach, but he is more cut out for the NFL level. He coaches and runs his team like an NFL program. This does not work, unless you have superb athletes (mentally and physically).

Re: Any UVA football fans here?
Yep, I'm a fan!
Hate to see the boys loss to W & M, of all teams. Need to rebound QUICKLY! |

Somethings he says may somewhat be based on truth, but Coward is a idiot. Tons of other schools do the dress up stuff too. Get the F over it. |

Every conference has their Baylor (Big 12), Vanderbilt (SEC), Stanford (PAC-10), Northwestern (Big Ten), Duke (ACC), and they suck year in and year out. I just hope UVA isn't added to that list. |

Yeah, what he said struck a nerve with a lot of UVA folks, but he's right; UVA is soft. They have good talent (judging by NFL players from UVA), but they just don't play passionate football (as a team) while in Charlottesville. Talent wise, there is no reason why UVA should lose to W&M. Just for curiosity's sake, who else dresses up like that? Honestly, I don't know. |

Their standards for players arent tough, but they are great academic schools. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
UVA loss to W&M BLA HA HA HA HA.
|
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
UVa gets their ass handed to them in recruiting by Tech every eyar. Groh has pissed off coaches from Va Beach to Winchester and they all steer their kids away from there. The problem at UVa is simply lack of talent. They haven't had even an average QB in years. They hang their hat on a decent recruit here and there but their depth is atrocious. The way Groh "seems" to run the program one would think they'd be more successful but the proof is in the pudding. It is time for him to go...and for that school to either take major sports more seriously or get out of the major sports business.

Re: Any UVA football fans here?
With all that said the difference between a lower tier BCS school and a top tier I-AA school isn't all that great. I'd bet W&M/App St/Villanova/Richmond/JMU could beat Duke/UVa 3-4 times out of 10.

Just for curiosity's sake, who else dresses up like that? Honestly, I don't know.
Correct no reason to lose to a Div II school, I'll disagree they don't play passionately. I'm not sure they had the talent to win 5 games last year w/ their 3rd string QB in there. I'm not sure they should have won what, 8 or 9 games the year before. Who cares about Cowherd. He's an entertainer. He cares about Wins/Losses, making his points. The fact is UVA is one of the best schools in the country where a majority of their alumni make a damn fine living as doctors, lawyers, etc. Their acceptance threshold is a good bit higher than required and over the other teams in the ACC. UVA could never get a D. Hall, Vick, etc thru the doors. Doesn't matter how some students dress. Like mentioned, alot of schools do. With all of that UVA has had a good football tradition. True i don't see them winning the National Championship but they should contend for a bowl every year. Yet, i agree UVA needs a fresh start and it needs to start w/ AG and maybe Craig Littlepaige. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
Nice redsk1. I agree with all you just said.
Exactly, I have been to a ton of UVA games. It's not like they give or don't play hard. That is bs, we play fricking hard. If we are losing to W and M, that is embarrassing. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
I was just thinking UVA lost to W&M. LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
|
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
Well at least they lost to a better team this weekend. Well now that I think about it W&M is probably better then UVA.

I think there are 3 teams from the CAA are better than several ACC teams. The CAA is no joke. When you have 5 of your teams in the top 10 and 7 in the top 25 from a 12 team league that is called dominance. And the difference in play from I-A to I-AA isn't as great as most people think. |

I really don't follow college ball but I have just had to listen to so many UVA people talk about how great their school is its fun to rub it in some. I know its a great college and I'm all for school pride but its the way they talk down other schools in a snobby way that erks me. |

Since when has anyone done that on this site about UVA? I never have said that I am better than anyone else, or implied it because I went to UVA. Just as you feel people shouldn't be snobby don't you think that maybe you shouldn't just post "HAHAHA UVA LOST" on this thread? It is very hypocritical to ask a group of people to behave classy and maturely when you yourself do not heed that advice. If anything it makes you look worst. The whole "stooping down to the level" of those that "irk" you. I am not trying to be a smartass but you posts kinda "irk" me too (for the reasons stated above). |

I never said anyone here did that I spoke from my personal experience with people from that school. I also never said they were snooby people just that they tend to talk down other schools in a snobby way and thats why I think its funny when their school loose a game to another va school. Sure not everyone does this but I heard it done enough to feel this way. I live in Va so I'm around alot of people who attend Va colleges and only get this feeling when talking to most not all UVA students. With that said I still think its a great university and proud to have a school of that calliper in Va. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
Okay, three straight wins later, the 'Hoos are undefeated in ACC play...
That'll change, of course. Will Groh do just enough to make it one more year? |

I'm actually a fan of both UVA and Va Tech. I grew up rooting for UVA but my family is from Blacksburg and my dad lives there now. Living in Richmond, of course, there are more Tech fans than UVA fans w/ their recent success. I can honestly say that Tech fans are more crappy to UVA fans than vice versa. But hey, maybe you know some snobby UVA fans. |

That'll change, of course. Will Groh do just enough to make it one more year?
I don't think so. Barring a miracle finish to the season i think he's still done. I do think a change is needed. I also think Al Groh is a heck of a motivator and a heck of a football coach. There's just a lack of talent at UVA right now at the skill positions. We're playing w/ a 2nd - 3rd string QB right now. Lalich was supposed to be a 3 or 4 year starter. He's gone. Sewell would be the 2nd string and he's been in and out. Verica was either 3rd or 4th string and he played out b/c of the injury to Sewell. So, i'd back up my post weeks ago that UVA does play w/ passion. They just don't have the talent vs alot of other teams. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
I live in Charlottesville, and I want to see UVA do well. Unfortunately, we have an Al Groh problem, somewhat akin to the Danny/Vinny problem.
Since Danny won't do the right thing and sell the Redskins, I think that the best way out of the sustained mediocrity that is UVA football would be for Danny to hire Al as Redskins head coach. Look at the upside: --Provided that UVA hired a dynamic, creative head coach, our fortunes would only improve; and --Groh's droning presentations to the media would soon put everyone to sleep, so that the pain associated with continued mediocrity would be less noticeable. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
One of the main problems many cite is that Groh is actually TOO much like an NFL coach, and not a NCAA coach. Coaching the team and the kids like that usually doesnt work, unless you have some really smart/talented guys.
UVA usually doesnt recruit well/ has too high academic standards to achieve that. |
Re: Any UVA football fans here?
A couple of guys that I went to HS with played for UVA. My HS even took a trip there to see the facilities on the way to play GW Danville in the VHSL State Quarter Finals. As for me I always wanted to go to VA Tech and I used to make several trips down there a year to see my girlfriends. I never ended up going there but I fell in love with the school, the town, and the football team. This was 4 years before they blew up and went to their first National Championship game. The only time I have a problem with UVA is the final game of the year and its a rivalry thing, not a hate thing.
I seriously hate only 2 teams, Miami and Georgia Tech. Edit: Here are Danville's results from 1996. Can you gess which team I played for? RESULTS-1996 |

hooskins is really honestly one of the few uva fans ive met who has been down to earth and not snobby. pretty much everyone who goes to uva that was my friend, even my best friend who went to uva, is very snobby. if they lose to us, they say they dont care about football because academics is what really matters and just call us rednecks (i went to tech). certainly not everyone does this but ive been to uva many times, mainly to the fraternities, and this is the kind of banter that goes on. to be completely honest tech has every right to talk down to uva in terms of football. we have beat them down for years now. but like i said, its not everyone at uva, certainly not hooskins, but ive experienced my fair share of snobby people there. |

Re: Any UVA football fans here?
funny thing about the excuse that uva has too high academic standards to recruit well, is if you look at rivals.com, the main recruiting website, most of the tech commitments were also offered by virginia as well. they offer many of the same players, kids just dont want to play for uva right now. uva used to out recruit tech not that long ago, just a lame excuse now that the program is failing miserably. ive heard every lame excuse in the book. ive heard because tech has more students they have more money to recruit. yet uva's endowment is over 3 BILLION more than tech's. it doesnt boil down to uva having top notch academics for their failure, its bad coaching, plain and simple.

Cavs are going to name Mike London (Richmond) as their next head coach. Nice choice, he's an impressive person

Seriously, Wahoo fans I live near Charlottesville so I have seen the suffering on UVA fans' faces, it looks somewhat similar to us Skins fans' faces.

~~~~~~~ I am glad schools have high academic standards because lets face it, 95% of these guys are not going to play on Sundays. I am a long suffering Duke fan and their issue much like UVA's has been there has not been much of a plan nor solid coaching which has cause their football program to be average to below average since the late 80's. |
