Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
Devin Thomas, WR: I realize this is going out on a limb. I still have a healthy fear of all Michigan State receivers, but Thomas is taking a much smarter approach this offseason. And I think he's ready to make a significant impact. And yes, a Redskins coach is whispering things to me.
Who's your breakout player in the Beast?
I definitely think that the last part is interesting, about the coach. I really hope Devin Thomas comes into his own this season. If he, Malcolm and Fred Davis pan out, and you add them to the weapons we already have on offense, this could be a pretty scary team. I really hope Zorn gives these kids the chance to shine this season. |
Re: Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
Thomas is saying all the right things so far, and it seems that the buzz around him has been pretty positive. If he can become a quality #2 this year and bump ARE to the #3 that would be huge for the offense.

I agree that ARE would be best at #3 WR in the slot I do not believe that he has the size to be a #2WR... |

I definitely agree. I think that the offense would be far better if Thomas became a legit 2 or even took over for Santana and pushed him to the #2 spot. If Malcolm Kelly works his way into the O, then he would be a great 3rd down and red zone threat, hell, I just want one of them to step up and be the #2 guy this season. I don't have a huge preference as to who it is. I just want to see a tall receiver become a factor in this offense, that could make it far more dynamic. |

If it works out this way....we're golden. I think he learned a lot about what it takes to play with the big boys last year. |

I think best case over the next few seasons is Thomas becoming the #2 this year moving ARE to the #3, then eventually Thomas becoming the #1 with Kelly as the #2 and Moss in the slot. That could be a sick WR combination. |

Definitely, I would love for that to happen. I've been thinking for the past couple of seasons that in an ideal situation, Santana would be a slot receiver. He's built more like a guy I want in the slot than as a #1, but that's just me. Before someone points out Steve Smith, I'm well aware that small receivers can be #1's, but I just don't think Santana's good enough to be a go to receiver anymore. |

The problem has been that every team knows the only other guy on the team they might have to double is Cooley, and he spent a no. of plays last year blocking in pass pro, then releasing for short safey valve patterns like a rb. But overall I agree that Moss can't be expected to be THE guy this year & beyond. It's been an issue for the offense since he got here - no legit #2 wr- and soon age will catch up to him. |

That really would be an awesome combo. I haven't heard a whole lot about Kelly's progress though, just that his knee is doing better. |
Re: Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
Is it just me or has anyone else felt we need a reliable set of hands most of all. Seems like our guys drop a high number of passes, or maybe it's just at the most inopportune times...

Well I think dropped balls has a lot to do with age. In my own personal case.......nevermind. |

I think the other problem is he hasn't been able to be healthy for a full season lately. I think his injuries has cause his to lose a step the last two seasons. So let's say in '10 Kelley becomes the #1, Thomas the #2 and Moss in the slot? What does the team do with Randle El. Does he strictly become a punt returner? |

I agree, that's the main reason I don't see Santana as a legit #1 any more. I know there are plenty of guys who drop balls (TO, Braylon) but I wouldn't take either as my #1 guy. |

I think this would be big for Are as he is just one notch below a true #2 WR and if Thomas could become a real threat it would open things up for Are and Moss. Then you throw Cooley into the mix and JC would have some weapons. |
Re: Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
Anyone know if WR drops are tracked anywhere? I'd like to know where Moss stacks up exactly.
|
Re: Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
Dcbuchanon, Mosley also has a raging hard on for Campbell, so since it is an "expert" I guess JC is gonna win MVP.

Wondered the same thing myself as it seems there are whole stretches where Moss and the other WRs get the dropsies...playoff against Seattle in '07 one of the worst I remember. I loooooove this bit about Thomas. He's got all the athleticism in the world...i mean IMHO that's obvious as soon as the ball is in his hands. He needs to develope his WR skills to bring out the potential and then it's off the races...this kid could just be huge. |

According to Outsiders:
dropped passes are not specified in publicly available play-by-play, and unfortunately we cannot yet correct for this.
|

No idea how they're defining "passes dropped" though |
Re: Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
i dont think dropped passes really effected or should be weighed to heavily in analyzing our inability to get things going thru the air. dropped passes are going to happen. but they can be killers like:
the 1st play of the reg season 2 (or 3 seasons ago) years ago where gibbs called for a play action deep ball to llyod. everyone executed, JC threw a perfect long ball and lloyd just dropped the damn thing. playoff game against seattle, second half, seahawks never touched the ball on a kickoff, that tall receiver we picked up from NYG recovered the ball, TC threw a ball to cooley near the sideline at the 2 but cooley dropped it. i think a penalty gets called pushes us back, suisham misses the fg. momentum killer. these individual drops on important plays really stick out to me more than any of our receivers having a consistent case of the dropsies like braylon edwards or TO for that matter. i really like the idea of going into next season with thomas and davis as 2nd year players. i think both have the potential to be big time players, especially the raw athletic ability of davis. thomas to me seems alil to thin or frail to be that tall physical reciever but we shall see. he comes off to me as a torry holt more than a TO. thin, lanky, tall with good speed and cuts, hopefully he can learn to run routes like holt. go skins!! |

Looking at the Salary Cap Summary on this site I don't think the Skins can let go of ARE until 2012 due to his large release fees, but then again I did not think they would have let go of Jansen for this reason either. If ARE can't contribute as a #3 WR I really think his pay would justify getting cut. |

Omg why does the media hate the redskins.

Re: Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
The media is going to promote the winning teams. Let's be frank, the Redskins are not a winning team. They are a .500 team and have hovered around that mark since Dan Snyder has been owner. At times, the team looks good. The personnel on the roster look great but the results are mediocre. Until the team reaches its full potential, the media will continue to write them off. Realistically, what have they done to gain respect? I love this team but it is dysfunctional. Too many hasty decisions and knee jerk personnel moves.

Thomas has all the tools, he just needs to go out and do the damm thing.

Re: Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
I saw a drill on NFL Access with Colt throwing the ball today and it involved Thomas, Mitchell and Elias and Elias caught only like 2 0f 6 Thomas dropped a couple but the Mitchell kid had glue on his hands. I like his size also, definitly a prototype size receiver. Could he be the Horton out of the draft this year?

I hope so. Like you said, he has good hands and size. I think the biggest thing for him is learning the shorter and more intermediate routes. He was used mostly as a longball threat in college. So far, I've heard nothing but good things about him. |

Dude has to make the team first. He's a bit of a longshot if you ask me. |

That would be nice, however a lot of talk is that he needs a good bit of work learning and running the route tree. He was mostly a vertical threat at Nevada. |

Would be nice. It happens... Marques Colston? |

He can't do any worse than last year, him, or Kelly, things can only go up but im starting to get a good vibe from that Marko Mitchell kid.

YES IT WAS A SILLY DRILL AND #11 DT LOOKED LIKE HE WAS GOOFIN' OFF, BUT ...... MARKO LOOKED BIG AS HELL AND LOOKED SMOOTH ... IF THOMAS CAN PRODUCE, WHICH I BELIEVE HE WILL, THIS WILL TAKE SOOOO MUCH PRESSURE OFF MOSS ... I'M FOAMING AT THE MOUTH FOR THE POSSIBLITIES !!! THROW THIS MARKO KID IN THE MIX .. thomas will ball out this yr hes more comfortable than last yr
|
Re: Matt Mosley Predicts a Break Out Year for Thomas
It all depends on our ability to run the ball . As far as our passing game , if we allow JC to stand tall in the pocket , we should be fine . Should Thomas win the WR spot opposite Moss , that could do wonders for R. EL , who should make some big plays from the slot . I have a feeling F. Davis is going to also make some big plays < and a few 1st downs > for us this year .
