Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
I'm still seeing the LB poll, but when I can vote it will be for Mann. He was a complete player. Manley got the headlines and was flashier, but give me Mann any day.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
Should be up now.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
Judging by the thread title, it will have to be some dude named Ned
|
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
Negative 39 votes for Jason Taylor please and a write in vote for Kenard Lang.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
I vote for Flanders
And Charles Mann, one of my favorite people. Extremely underrated player. And the guy who helped get us Tony McGee to be a regular contributor on the Warpath |

lol too funny |
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
Love Charles Mann but I'm going with Dexter Manley. He hated Dallas and put their QB's where they belong. On their ass. Of course I wouldn't mind Mann either, great player and one of the classiest guys to ever play.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
My vote is for Charles Mann. Put up very good sack totals from LDE. Complete LDEs who can rush the passer and shut down the run are few and far between. Great team leader also. 4 Pro Bowls, 2 SBs. Manley, while putting up dynamic sack totals for a 4 year stint, only reached 1 Pro Bowl. While not suspect against the run, wasn't as consistent or solid as Mann. Brito earned 5 Pro Bowls and 3 All-Pros, but tackle and sack numbers weren't kept back then and I've never heard of him prior to this poll.

Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
Since a team needs two defensive ends, let me vote for Charles Mann and Gene Brito.
Charles Mann needs no introduction to the folks here. Gene Brito may need some introduction... Here is a stat on Brito that was given to me by a pro football writer whose work has been recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton:
Gene Brito was never called for a 15-yard penalty in his entire career in the NFL. [Back then; all penalties were 5 yards or 15 yards or "spot of the foul".]
He played 6 or 7 years with the Skins in the 1950s and then played for the Rams for another year - - maybe another 2 years? He died back in the 60s at a very early age. In his 6 or 7 years with Washington, he went to the Pro Bowl 5 times. He also played tight end for the Redskins. |

renaldo wynn lol

Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
Defensive Ned? Sounds like a good name for a comic strip. I picture some dorky or unfortunate looking fellow (perhaps the 80's guy holding the disc in 70Chip's favorite picture) all defensive about his appearance. LOL

Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE NED
I'll be voting for Charles Mann.
|
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
Who is Gene Brito? Oh, he played in 51-53 and 55-58. I wasn't even born. Did they have television, because I haven't seen a highlight or mention of him before. I think it is a no-brainer, Charles Mann, maybe Dexter Manley.

Please. Kenard Lang wipes the floor with Renaldo Wynn. Remember that season where Kenard had 30 sacks. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
Mann was (is) the man.
Dexter was my favorite player for years. Despite some inconsistency & not that stout vs. run, he gave the d a spark & touch of flamboyance to an otherwise quiet group. |

YouTube - Ernst & Young "Today's Legend of the Game" Dexter Manley
i agree with this..does anybody remember that game in 89 where he sacked Phil simms 4 times in one quarter? We lost that game, but he was a beast. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
I'm going with Gene Brito. That guy was a menace, one of the best DE's to play for any team during the 50's.
I also give props to Mann - good player, good human being. |

Wasn't just headlines and flash. Dexter's 90+ sacks still rank the most among any man who wore the burgundy and gold. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
No love for Ron McDole. 12 interceptions! What linemen would get that now? Or what about our very own Tony McGee :)
Anyhow, Mann was no slouch as a pass rusher either, 80+ sacks in his career |

Manley was a heck of a pass rusher no doubt, but he wasn't as stout against the run as Mann was. And Mann was a pretty good pass rusher himself. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
Dexter Manley and Charles Mann was the best pair of Washington Redskin defensive ends. Maybe the best defensive end pair of all time.
|
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
Dexter Manley. He was the one other teams feared most.
Charles Mann was also an outstanding DE. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
Its really close between Mann and Manley. Charles is a class act and Dexter had his drug addiction and prison. I would have to with total body of work with Charles Mann.
Didn't Deacon Jones and Coy Bacon play for the Redskins back in the day? |
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
I voted Charles "Hungry" Mann, he was always there when you needed him from what I can remember.
|
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
stats?
|
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
Dexter won? Wow. I mean, I did vote for him and made a tiny case for him on the thread, but I thought Mann was the direction most were going in--in fact, he seemed to have a good lead on Dexter when I voted.
Atta boy, Dexter. |

Osi and Strahan would beg to differ with that. But they were good. |

They......flat-assed scared offenses. Manley had a way of whipping the Defense into a frenzy. It became like a swarming....Juggernaut |
Re: Redskins Best Ever Series: DEFENSIVE END
Just watched the '87 and the '91 skins on NFL network. Both great shows. They said Mann had a 28" waist. The man looked lean, but WOW!
