Sport Announcers
Being that we really don't have much to talk about right now, I had the question asked to me the other day as to who my favorite sport announer is and least favorite...I had joe buck, Gus Johnson, and brent mussberger as my favorites and I had kornheiser, and Bryant gumbel as my least favorites(there's a reason their not doing they're jobs anymore)
Others I like are al michaels, cris collinsworth, and jim nantz...kenny alberts good to listen to, but is weird looking when they show him, the voice just doesn't match him Now who are your favorite and least favorite sport announcers? |
re: Sport Announcers
Al Michaels, Madden in his prime, Ernie Harwell(longtime radio guy for the Detroit Tigers), Dick Vitale(Zany on TV, but cool at the same time). Aikman does a good job for Fox and is pretty unbiased if he does a Boys-Skins game.
|
re: Sport Announcers
bryant gumbal is the worst by far i do like dan dierdorf and al michaels
|
Re: Sport Announcers
Al Micheals, Kenny Albert, Moose and Goose, and good ole Pat Sumerall. I hate collinsworth because he always sticks his foot in his mouth, and is for some reason always hating on the Redskins. Aikman tries, but he is not the most poetic speaker and fumbles his words and misnames players too much. Don't know why but that bothers me. And freakin Joe Buck. He is the biggest prick. Cant stand him!! Anyone else miss dennis miller? Just kidding. and what happened to Dan Fouts? He wasnt too bad.

Re: Sport Announcers
Madden, Glanville and Bradshaw brought some color to the game. Aikman is a pro. Summerall, Enberg, Tirico and Michael's and Joe Buck do or did a good job calling the game. Phil Simms is good.
As far as terrible announcers go, I could really run with this one. Dennis Miller...terrible. Whoever mentioned his name at the meeting should've been fired and asked to leave this fine country. Kornheiser...terrible. Bill Maas is a Madden wanna be and I like Madden. I'm not a fan of Ichabod Crane, I mean Cris Collinsworth. Dierdorf brought little to nothing to game IMO. And there are others im sure. I may catch some heat on this one but hell, this America. I hate the women on the sidelines. I hate Suzy Kolber (I thought that was it was hilarious when Joe Namath told her that he wanted a kiss.) and Lesley Visser and their stupid matching hats and scarves. Andrea Kramer, that red head from ESPN, something Nicols, Pam Oliver, all of them suck. Maybe they don't. Actually they do pretty good job it's just that they're women. I just don't think they have any business questioning or second guessing a coach about their game plan. Football is a man's game. And don't get me wrong, I have no problem with women having positions of power I just don't want to hear them babbling on the sidelines when I'm watching the games on Sunday's. |
Re: Sport Announcers
Madden/Summerall; Kenny Albert/Moose Johnson

I think she brings alot to the game calling. As far as the others go, I am not too familiar with them. |

Re: Sport Announcers
Charrisa Thompson. She's a pro.
|
Re: Sport Announcers
Hate to say it but I'd take Aikman over just about anyone. Buck's good but I can't get over his perfunctory call of the helmet catch, one of the greatest plays in NFL history. The broadcasting equivalent of dropping a two out fly ball to lose.
|
Re: Sport Announcers
Dick Stockton is an all-time favorite of mine. The guy just keeps on ticking. He actually was the NBC announcer for the Red Sox-Reds '75 Game 6 when Fisk hit the home run, and he just keeps doing sports, one year after another (he did the Skins-Saints game last season--he made have done another one of our games).
I also have always liked Mike Patrick, and I'm glad I have the MLB package so I can listen to Vin Scully do Dodgers games. |
Re: Sport Announcers
Harry Kalas (RIP), because I grew up on him with the Phillies.
On football, Al Michaels is definitely my favorite play by play guy. Probably have to go with Aikman for commentary because he keeps his cool, isn't overly excitable, and is pretty fair to both sides. He's actually complimentary of the Redskins when the situation calls for it. Know who showed pretty good promise last year was Brian Billick. Tremendous technical analysis of the Xs and Os on the telestrator. And he gives good insight into the psychology of the coach/QB relationship. It was good stuff you couldn't get from anybody else. I hate Jaws when he's in the booth, but love him in the studio. Best breakdown of gametape in history. |
Re: Sport Announcers
I think an underrated reason why the Caps have become so popular in the DC area over the past two seasons is that Joe Beninati is such a damn good announcer. He always does a great job of teaching the audience the finer points of hockey without talking down to the viewers, and he does it in a way that you barely notice it. This helps more casual fans follow the game closer. Since he's on the local broadcast he may seem to be a bit of a homer to non-Caps fans but I still thinks he manages to keep it professional.
As for football, I like Aikman a lot and Joe Buck is okay but I get annoyed when he (and all announcers) pick some random point and harp on it for the rest of the game. There is a CBS team that I like but I can't remember who they are right now since I don't watch as many AFC games. I think it might be Ian Eagle and whoever he's with but I'm not sure. |

Re: Sport Announcers
Jack Buck and Hank Stream is my favorite announcing team of all time
|
Re: Sport Announcers
SmootSmack:
If you recall - and liked - Jack Buck and Hank Stram, you probably also remember Curt Gowdy and Al Derogatis from AFL days. They were good too. I notice that no one here has mentioned Larry Michael... For those who are convinced that all the announcers in the world hate the Redskins, I'm surprised that Michael isn't at the top of their list for greatness. If he had called the 73-0 loss to the Bears back in the 40s, he would have attributed it to a couple of balls bouncing the wrong way and three questionable calls by the officials... |
Re: Sport Announcers
Thom Brennaman one of the best. Ok I had to say that because he is my cousin.
|

he's alright, it sucks tho that he gets paired with charles "i dunno what im doing here" davis, and Brian "Santonio Moss" Billick |
Re: Sport Announcers
I like Aikman, Costas, Buck, Tim McKarver, Collinsworth, Michaels, Joe Morgan.
Dislike Gumbel, Baldinger, any Albert, rip Harry Kalas. |

Gowdy was good (at both football or baseball), but he never tried to hide his support for AFC teams when he did games featuring an NFC/AFC match up. |
Re: Sport Announcers
I'll take Buck, Aikman from what's out there these days and if we're talking football, of course.
The worst I could imagine would be Joe Benenati doing play by play with Adam Schein. Talk about a fake voice field day. |
Re: Sport Announcers
Hate Colinsworth so much hates on the Skins any chance he gets.
|
Re: Sport Announcers
Buck and Aikmen are currently the best pair IMO.
|
Re: Sport Announcers
Yeah I don't see what others see in Collinsworth. He seems to be everywhere and I am not looking forward to hearing him--Maybe Al Michaels is good enough for both of them on Sunday nights. Aikman is very fair and clear; I enjoy listening to him do a game. I always thought Dick Enberg was a good play by play guy--he and Merlin Olsen was good together.

Re: Sport Announcers
(there's a reason their not doing they're jobs anymore)
well one got ONE of the there/their/they're's right I'd go with madden overall, summerall is great, aikman is a good newer guy least? gumble |

I think he was pretty good on FOX pregame. Mostly because JB, Terry and Howie made him eat his words when he made an ass out of himself. In the booth there is no one to censor his idiocy. |
Re: Sport Announcers
Some of my favorite sport announcers are as follow:Brent Musberger, Keith Jackson, Pat Summerall, Al Michaels, Howard Cosell, Mike Trico, John Madden, Joe Thiesman,Curt Gody, Chris Berman, Troy Aikman, Ron "Jaws", Frank Gifford,Dan Dierdorf. My least favorite as follow:Torny Kornheiser, Dennis Miller,Goose, Emmit Smith, Lynn Swann, Don Medereth,Dan Marino, Jimmy the Greek lol, OJ Simpson.

Re: Sport Announcers
I loved Pat Summerall and love Mike Patrick. I hate Joe Buck.
|
Re: Sport Announcers
There aren't many guys that I don't like, but I never have been able to handle Cris Collinsworth. He's terrible. I can't listen to him. Also, I don't like having Siragusa on the sidelines, or anywhere a microphone, for that matter.
People I like: Joe Buck, Tim Ryan, Al Michaels,...I can't think of anymore off the top of my head, but I'm sure thare are some |

Re: Sport Announcers
#1 all time is Chick Hern who brodcast for the Lakers R.I.P. Hern is the only announcer that I would turn off the sound on the TV and listen to the radio if he wasn't doing the game on TV.
The worst IMO is Cris Collinsworth |
Re: Sport Announcers
Best: Madden, Al Michaels, Mike Patrick, Joe Buck, Kenny Alberts, Moose and Goose, JB, Terry, Howie, Chris "Swami" Berman, Ron "Jaws" Jaworski, Baldinger, Pat Summerall, Larry Micheal, Sam Huff, and Sonny Jurgensen
Best Combo: Buck and Aikman(hate Aikman) Worst: Chris Collinsworth, Gumbel, Dierdorf... basically everyone on CBS (except Bill Cowher and Shannon Sharper) because they sound like Ben Stein, Aikman, and Dick Vitale Worst Combo:Anyone on CBS |
Re: Sport Announcers
i agree with the anyone on CBS line. and welcome to the board
