NFL Network: Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs.

Adam Schefter just reported this a moment ago.

Link coming soon.

Wow! Big move. Patriots get Brady back and now they'll have an extra 1st round pick each of the next two years. Sheesh.

It's almost like other teams WANT the Patriots to continue their dominance. Nice work a-holes.

I can't stand the Patriots, but their smart, you have to give them that. Cocky Bastards!

Here's a link, no real details on terms other than he hasn't agreed to an extenstion with KC yet...

Is this confirmed? I haven't seen details on the compensation yet. I would think that is a little steep.

If they get two first rounders for a guy who never started a game in college that is probably the best offseason move of all time (up there with Moss for a 4th rounder and the Herschel Walker debacle).

I think you have to give credit to the Patriot's leadership. Their culture does not allow other people's problems to bring them down. In fact they thrive.

Anyone want to bet that Fred Taylor doesn't have a huge year? (My early bet for comeback POY).

There might be a third team involved

I thought those were the terms of Cassel's franchise tag. I could be wrong.

EDIT: Nevermind, it was trade. They would only get those two 1st rounders if they signed him while the Pats still held his rights under the franchise tag. I guess I'm a little slow on the uptake today.

New England has three second round picks now. Any chance they become a trade partner? They could use a corner with Deltha O'Neal and Ellis Hobbs as their starters. They also need OLB's but the draft is deep there so they can afford to wait.

I think that drafting at 13 gives us a better chance for a "can't miss" talent but if they threw in their #1 and their first second rounder you probably have to take it.

I would not give up 13 if Andre Smith was there.

Wow. Pioli doing what he does. Unreal. King makes a good point - the fact that Houston gave up two 2nd rounders for Matt Schaub a few years back makes this one a head scratcher. You better believe the Chargers, Broncos, and Raiders are pretty miffed.

Keep in mind that Vrabel was part of the deal.

Andre Smith really would improve the run game:

"An absolute mauler. Overpowering at the point of attack. Takes solid angles and is almost always in position if the block is at the line of scrimmage. Shows good upper-body power and even stronger in the lower body. Drives defenders off the line of scrimmage. Only small concern here is that he sometimes is a bit slow getting into position as a second-level run blocker."

On top of that the front office has shown that it won't shy away from guys with marginal character issues (Davis, Kelly, Thomas, Haynesworth, Hall) so it's definately not out of the range of possibilities. Kind of funny though how a lot of our most recent acquisitions fit the marginal character issues profile.

Plus I think the fact that he was considered a top 5 pick will weigh heavily in their final evaluation of Smith as I think they still had Kelly graded as a first round pick when they took him.

Re: NFL Network: Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs.

NE didn't get taken by this trade, they cut their salary cap in a huge way. They didn't mind getting a 2nd round pick for a huge costs savings.

Which makes it an even bigger robbery. A veteran leader on defense and a young franchise QB for a lone 2nd round pick.

It'll helps us in a trade down scenario because looking at the NE depth chart the Patriots really need an OLB (Thomas is 31 and missed the last 7 or 8 games) and they showed with Jerod Mayo last year that they're not shy about reaching for the guy they want but I'm on the Andre Smith bandwagon so I'm kind of hoping we stay put at 13.

Re: NFL Network: Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs.

Unless Cassel is way better than I think he is, the Patriots still win this deal. Smart move by their FO to take what they can get for Cassel despite the fact that there's no market for his services.

If KC pays Cassel like a franchise QB, they're crazy, but at the same time, I don't see how you make this move without extending him.

Re: NFL Network: Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs.

This is a win - win.
New England originally drafted Cassell in the 7th round (16th pick in the 7th round)..
Good job to use him one season and go 11-5 then turn around and trade him for a high 2nd round pick (3rd pick in the 2nd round).
PLus pats will immediately clear $18.95 million from their 2009 cap space. THey will look to add more talent.

The Chiefs get two starters for one 2nd round pick. Cassell is schooled in the Pats offense and will help the new Chiefs coaching staff install the new system.
The Chiefs improved greatly at a very important position QB, that they were terrible at the last few years. TE Gonzalez is already there. They could draft WR Crabtree and they will have a good offense.

How does Cassell being schooled in the Pats offense help the Cheifs and Todd Haley install their offense?

You mentioned Tony Gonzalez- I think this will go a long way with helping him remain with the team. He said he wants to play for a contender and basically he would request a trade if they didn't make some major changes. I think this counts as major.

Todd Haley was part of Bill Parcells staffs at both the New York Jets and Dallas.
Haley and Bellichek are Parcells students.
Cassell has NFL experience and is lucky to have played and learned in one of the better NFL offenses. He understands how to handle and read NFL defenses. His experience is a plus. You think this is not an advantage?

I think Cassell's experience from last year is more of an advantage than the fact that his new head coach had the same mentor as his old head coach. But I see where you're coming from.

good deal for the chiefs, but the NE offense isn't coming with him.

he's an upgrade, but he won't repeat last year's numbers without moss welker and the rest of the NE crew.

now maybe the pats can grab sanchez and end up even better off because of this... and they also have cap space to sign a couple guys now too.

The "Dirty Sanchez" is either going to Detroit or SF, he won't make it to NE.

Actually according to NFL Netowrk several teams were calling about him TB being one of them.

This is a good trade for both teams. NE couldn't keep Cassel at 14mil and KC needs a QB.

I think you'll see KC do the same stuff NE and Ariz did which is run out of shotgun and have a lot of 3-4 and 5 wr sets....granted that KC gets some help at wr. Bowe looks like a future star.

Good point. I have nothing against Cassel but like I think he had a lot of things helping him in NE (good o-line, two great receivers, and a very good defense). But there is potential in Cassel and Darth Hoody get another 2nd round. I think Darth Hoody did his friend Pioli a big favor by just asking for a 2nd rounder.

Last year after Thigpen ( I like this kid) took over, they were in just about every game. Their defense let them down, I'm surprised they traded for Cassell when Thigpen looked good the 2nd half of the season for a rookie.

My point is they didn't get blown out, except for the Buffalo game and Thigpen developed chemistry with Gonzales and Bowe. A few FA and solid draft and they are ready for contention.

As we learned from the Taylor trade, a second round pick is still a steep price to pay.

Cassell might have a better plight than Derek Anderson, but I have to think he's in a similar boat as Thigpen from what we know about him thus far.
