it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Alot of free agents to be are either being franchised (14) or signed by their original teams. Also alot of teams seem to be under the cap, so late cap cuts are expected to be minimal. The less free agents there are means that the ones who make it to free agency will be more overpaid than usual. The Skins will definitely not be able to significantly overpay free agents. We are stuck with the draft which will be good for our future, but makes me very pessimistic about this upcoming season.

Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
There are still plenty of players who will hit the free agent market next week. What we're seeing are the big names being locked up before they have a chance to hit the open market.
We may not get anyone who will be considered a "big splash," but that doesn't mean we can't find some value. Vinny and Zorn have both said cost will be a big factor in FA, so guys like Jordan Gross, Vernon Carey, etc probably wouldn't have been in our price range even if they didn't receive extensions. I wouldn't say we're "stuck" with the draft. There will be some FA's out there who can help us. |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
I don't see a solid season for the next few years. We'll be lucky to get the average results that we've had.
With that said we should take advantage of it. If we know we can't do anything in FA, we'll ok. We can get a few guys here or there that fit our schemes that can play. They might not have a big name but they'll not have that big pay check either. If there is a capped year in 2010 then we'll be well under it and be able to spend some cash. Even if it isn't we'll still be able to spend cash, short an economic depression. Maybe now that the FA is no longer an option the FO will take care to draft better players. The last time we had four draft picks we got Sean Taylor, Chris Cooley and two OTs, I think. So look at the bright side. |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Still early for this thread but I would welcome an all draft 2009 unless a good punter turns up FA.
|
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
I'm still not ready to give up on next year. I still think our "O" will be better with a little line adjustment if for no other reason then JC and our receivers having another year under their belts in this offense.

Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
We still have some interesting prospects within the roster that I think will flourish + whoever we draft.
Alex Buzbee Rob Jackson Matt Sinclair Devin Clark Chad Rinehart Alfred Fincher |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Id be surprised if any of thoseguys touch the field once....

Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Bugel needs to coach Rhinehart up...get him some reps...see if he can make any impact at all...the rest of em...not good.

Alex Buzbee Rob Jackson Matt Sinclair Devin Clark Chad Rinehart Alfred Fincher[/quote] Buzbee-Seen as a pass-rushing specialist from what I understand, but they have high hopes he'll start to contribute this year Jackson-Haven't figured out what he adds to the team Sinclair-Special teamer at best I'd imagine Devin Clark-Not sure why he's been talked up so much this offseason. Wish we had kept Crummey Rinehart-He needs to play. Maybe with Thomas' neck/spine injury, and I hate to think this because I'm a big fan of his, there might be an injury settlement down the line this offseason? Fincher-He'll battle for playing time and wouldn't be surprised to see him emerge as our new Khary Campbell (special teams leader) There's also Kareem Moore who should have a bigger role this year. And one guy who we're not talking about at all but who is more highly regarded around the league than I would have ever imagined is Justin Tryon. |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
I guess if you're only looking at the big names you could say we're "stuck" with the draft. I don't think the Skins are looking to go big anyway. I think we'll see them focus on the 2nd tier guys and depth type of players.
|
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Skins have no money or enough draft picks to go big this year. Unfortunately this is a very weak draft class for guards...
Hopefully OT Andre Smith will fall down during his 40...he then slips to us at #13. A man can dream cant he? |

I think he's going to turn out pretty good. Kinda surprises me too about Tryon. Maybe the FO knows more than we give them credit for? It would be great if these guys would show the reason we drafted them this year. This year would be a really good time to step up. |

Is Tryon far enough along that it might tip the scales on the decision to release Springs? |

No, not at all. I mean if Springs is released it won't be because of Tryon. But Tryon is considered a strong dime with potential to pretty easily become the nickel (assuming Rogers and Hall are the starting DBs, and Springs is gone) by early in the season. |

Can you elaborate more on what people are saying about Tryon? |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
ahhh well sounds like we'll be taking the patriots way at doing things. Going after second tier guys and drafting who fit or scheme! lol And tyron? really?
|
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Is Tryon really that good? I go to school where I cant watch the Skins games, but I saw all the preseason games and he honestly looked like the worst player out there. Did he really improve that much?

Came in very raw, but has picked up on the "mental aspects" of playing defense very quickly (his attention to detail in the film room was previously a knock on him). Played smart football, meaning he didn't miss his assignments, embarass himself, or force teammates to cover for his mistakes, when he got on the field last year. Probably won't ever be a #1 or #2 CB, but has a bright future as a nickel back. Also, being considered to return kicks this year. |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Screw the FA's , our draft could be special if the front office runs it correctly
Start by trading down with Detroit to #20 Add a 2nd and a 5th 1st #20 Clint Sintim OLB (Starter) 2nd #33 Jamon Meredith OT(starter) 3rd #80 Andy Levitre OG (starter) 5th #129 Brandon Williams DE 5th#142 Jason Williams OLB 6th #173 Joe Burnett CB (bye bye Tryon or Westbrook) |

I don't so have no idea whether it's realistic to get three starters from the draft in rounds 1,2, and 3. However, I'll just point out that would be a major feat for the FO being our 3 rd pick from '08 may never be ready to start. |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
If Tryon even gets on the field this year (besides special teams) I will be shocked, he SUCKS ASS!

We'll see if Mayhew is willing to help his old friends from DC. |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
How/when do we know whether comp picks are headed our way?

:) Great deal if we could get it. Even Detroit's not that stupid. Not with Mayhew there. |

I dont think we lost any free agents last year that would give us any picks. |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Compensatory picks are decided in late March. We might at best get a 7th rounder or two for Pierson Prioleau and Vernon Fox, I think.

^^ hey we got Chris Horton w/ our 7th rd pick.. So who knows?

There are going to be some UDFA prospects out there so extra picks would allow us to take them before someone else has a chance. I'll take all we can get! |

Thats exactly it.. swap #13 for #20, #33 & #129 |

Gotta give him some time. Something some fans don't seem to understand. I found a pretty good pre-draft breakdown of him. That seems way too advantageous for us and of little benefit to them. I think if a trade works out at all we'll throw in two of our picks (hopefully our first and last) for something similar to what you have here. |
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
so tryon's rep is that he has no instincs but good recovery? Sounds like a POS football player to me, just a track star with pads on...
|
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
Reps and coaching can help with his ability to read routes.
|
Re: it seems we're stuck with the draft...
It's probably for the best that these big names are off the table--that much less to get Danny and Vinny excited. But I would expect some mild FA moves.
Time for Vinny to earn his damn money. |
