Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
I don't know about anyone else but NFL pre-game shows are virtually unwatchable for me. You get the usual stories, TO, McNabb crying, PacMan. You get some players like Emmitt Smith couldn't break down a game if his life depended on it.
Then there's Charley Casserly. He's smart, clear, and offers up things you might not know. He's a no frills guy who knows the NFL. I've got to say, that's about the only pre game segment that i enjoy anymore. Anyone else enjoy Casserly's segment? |
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
That's what you get from a GMU professor!
|
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
and why is he not our GM? Norv (who he disliked) has been gone 9 years. Plus Danny already admitted he picked the wrong guy in choosing Norv to stay.
Is Vinny still the problem? Oh please there are a dozen or so tasks that he could be still doing for Danny just not player acquisition. Bring him back. At this point he's probably the only good football mind that would come here given the FO structure. |
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
i would take him. but that's not saying much. i just really believe we need a football guy calling the football shots
|
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
Back in the day I watched pregame shows it was really my only NFL fix other then the morning paper, so it was new news to me. Now it is just re-hashed stuff from what they have been talking about all week on the internet.
Growing up in RI it was hard to get Skins news I use to subscribe to The Warpath it was a good maginze! |
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
Apparently, and I don't know how true this is, the Chiefs were going to offer Casserly the GM job if Pioli didn't take it.
I think his next job in the NFL though will be in the league offices. |

Casserly's last draft with Houston Texans in 2006 was very productive, like the old Redskins Bethard/Casserly drafts of the early 80's: 4 starters and 2 probowl players. 1 1 Mario Williams DE North Carolina State 2 33 DeMeco Ryans MLB Alabama 3 66 Eric Winston T Miami (Fla.) 4 98 Owen Daniels TE Wisconsin We have not drafted four starters in one draft since Snyder bought the team 10 years ago in May. |

I tune in at about 12:55 on Sundays. |
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
And here we are, stuck with Vinny. The nightmare will never end.

I think we need to give people a quiz and a trial period before joining this site. I mean I remember my "let's look at Bernard Berrian" post back when I joined the site, and some ppl ripped me for it. LOL. |

Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
Does anyone really think Danny boy is going to let his boytoy Vinnie go anywhere, our only hope is one day when he sells the team or get's too old to make decisions..

It was a good move as far as I'm concerned. Way to go Charley! I'd like to see Casserly back with us. He's a good personell guy and can take the heat when decisions need to be made. |
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
Casserly was fired by the redskins and the Texans. Both teams had a terrible record under his GM reign. Now he's doing the media.
Unfortunately, he's still better than Vinny. |

But anyway, it's amazing how many people seem to forget the 1990s and some of our stellar moves then (that had nothing to do with Cerrato), Harper, Wilkinson, Stubblefield, Noga, Banks. Or how about these awesome 1st round picks-Tom Carter, Andre Johnson. Casserly's a decent executive, but let's not make him out to be some sort of God that was flawless while he was here |

For a minute there I thought that you said that "Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder you know" I was thinking to myself "Get outta my head, 53"! In regard to this thread however, I never understood why we let Casserly go in the first place, on top of that I didn't understand why the Texans did the same. He is a great football mind and has made some good decisions. His job was to bring in the talent, which he did. It is up to the coach to get them to win...but Casserly got fired. |

I can keep going. Yes he made some bad moves when free agency first started. But I'd take Charley back over Vinny any day. You can just listen to the two men talk and tell who is more knowledgeable. |

We finally agree on something :). Drafting Mario Williams over Reggie Bush was a good decision in his part despite people all over criticizing this move (including me). I'd take Casserly over Cerrato any day. |

lol hell why not? Let's just pin blame on him for everything that is wrong with the NFL?! |
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
Casserly's commentary is very insightful. He gives a perspective that you don't hear about often in the media. He did a segment where he discussed the decision to draft Mario Williams and bypass Reggie Bush. It was very sound reasoning and a well though out decision. He got blasted for it at the time but it has turned out to be a very good move.

Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
God, this turned into a VC bashing thread. Well, I want in. How could anyone in their right mind rather have AA as opposed to Ryan Clark? Wow. Ugghhh. AA=40mill vs Ryan Clark=a lot less and a better player. Whoever made that decision should have been immediately fired....VC....JG....DS (could have fired himself from ever making a personel decision for the rest of his life). That's Raideresk right there.

We truly need to cut ties with Cerrato and bring back Casserly or hire the Eagles old gm

I don't think he was the GM when Lachey and Marshall were brought in. Ervins was ok for a third round pick, but given the same opportunities 7th rounder Rock Cartwright would probably be nearly as effective. Byner for Oliphant was a steal. We could use another Sotkes or Johnson. When we acquired Geathers, he was older than Andre Carter when we got him and Carter has given us nearly twice as many sacks. |

However, neither team did well or even average under his reign. So I'm also not going to get all mushy about him because most have forgotten how bad these teams were back then . Nor does naming a couple good players when his team's records and most of his overall picks were sub par. If he was so good he'd be a GM or Team President like the Tuna. BL - He was better than Norv and Vinny but there are better choices out there. |

Agreed. However the Gibbs '91 team fell apart quickly. Free Agency was a much tougher gig. We've not done well since then. I'm simply saying you also have to look at the rest of Casserly's GM years under Norv and the Texans for a true picture. I think Casserly has good football knowledge and is a good commentator. He is definitely better than Vinny, but then that's not saying much. Vinny's 2008 draft picks and FA selection was poor. Zorn and thee team will suffer if that doesn't improve. |
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
If Casserly is so great, how come he hasn't been employed by a team. Is it his choice or is it that no one has hired him?

Geathers job was simply to cave in the pocket, not to be an every down starter like they're doing with Carter. His sack total may not have been high but he was very disruptive forve. Basically my point was Casserly put together a team, guys he thought could play well together, not a cast of superstars. I remember bringing in RC Theilmann and drafting Martin Mayhew, or how about Brad Edwards who could've won the MVP of that SB. I just want a guy that knows how to build a team or has experience in doing it. |

Don't forget he also brought Matt Millen. Jumpy Geathers was a beast of a man, I remember seen him pick Guy McIntery of the 49ers and toss him to the ground like a ragdoll. |

I think he called that move the "Forklift". |
Re: Charley Casserly on CBS Pregame
Wasn't part of the reason Casserly was fired was because Snyder knew Casserly would oppose Snyder's Free Agent Spending spree?
