Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
During his first few years in the league, former Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington looked like one of the NFL’s most promising young defensive players. By the age of 25 he had been chosen to three Pro Bowls and had signed an eight-year contract extension, and he appeared on his way to becoming a Redskins legend.
But when Joe Gibbs became the coach, things started to change. Arrington and Gibbs didn’t see eye to eye, and Arrington wasn’t a good fit in the defense of assistant head coach Gregg Williams. By the age of 27 Arrington was out of Washington, and by 28 he was out of the NFL. Arrington is now retired, and he seems to blame Gibbs for the way his career headed south. He also suggests that if Gibbs really cared about his team, he wouldn’t have quit after the 2007 season. “I called Joe Gibbs a coward for leaving,” Arrington said, per the Washington Times. “You came in, you made some money for your NASCAR team. No one else is going to say that. I’m sure more people thought I was a [jerk] for saying that. Joe wouldn’t call me because he knows. There are a lot of people who know the truth about what went down with me and the Redskins.” Arrington is now the owner of a sports-themed restaurant that tries to attract Redskins fans, and as Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post notes, a lot of those Redskins fans probably won’t be too happy to hear that Arrington is calling Gibbs a coward.
ProFootballTalk.com - Rumor Mill I hate Lavar Arrington. If he was actually good, he would still be in the league. And we haven't had a Lavar Arrington thread in years, so why not waste everyones time with this one. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Who gives two shits about what Lavar has to say about Joe. How many rings did Joe help get this franchise..? THREE
And how many did Lavar get..? ZERO! Other than a kick out the door and gave money back on the way out, dumb ass. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Joe Gibbs is probably the most beloved coach we've ever had. Lavar Arrington was a great player and probably one of the most beloved players we've ever had. Other than to hate on one or the other, I see no purpose for this thread.
|
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
What did Gibbs do to get him hurt or involved in a motorcycle crash??
Lame. Suck it up LaVar and take a look in the mirror if you want to know what happened to your career. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
LaVar is a sad, pathetic man. I almost feel sorry for people like him. What a waste of life and talent.
|
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
I don't think Lavar was ever really beloved by Skin's fans, they were more beloved with his potential.
Kind of like dating someone because you are in love with being in love not in love with the person. For someone who is trying to become part of the Redskin market off the field (CSN reporter and his restaurant) this is not good. Sounds like sour grapes. |

Not sure if its all that. He did have a gripe with our front office which lead to him sitting on the bench and then to his trade. Its not all on Lavar and I could see how he has a beef with Gibbs who was the coach at the time this all went down. He had a motorcycle accident (which might have been dumb) but other than that its not like Lavar just threw his career away like maybe Pacman. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Screw you Lavar. You won't see me in your restaurant.
|
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Pretty dumb move for business. How many times is this guy going to commit career suicide? I liked him when he was playing and often he was the only thing worth watching on our team, but he has mental issues borderline TO.
|
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Count me in as one who was never in love with LaVar. I was in love with the pick when we got him because he was an exceptional talent with seemingly unlimited potential. I was never impressed with his play, outside of the few highlight reel plays that he provided in his time with the Skins.
He may be unhappy with the ways things ended for him here, but he has no one to blame but himself. He made three pro bowls predominantly on hype, but if you really watched him play what you saw was an undisciplined, out of position player who could make plays on sheer athletic talent alone. had he ever screwed his hat on properly he could have been the best linebacker in the NFL. What he said about JG just proves that he is a moron. Good riddance. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
oh well

Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
cocaine is hellova drug . . . seriously thoo if he wasnt on coke and followed his assignments and ate up blockers instead of freestyling and trying to make plays himself lavar would probaly still be here . . . atleast he got himself clean and like everyone who kicks he added a bunch of pounds.
i still wear my lavar jersey thoo . . . |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
and he was doing so well on CSN... :Flush:
|
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Can't fault a man for leaving the game once his contract was up. LaVar, time to move on brother. If you still got beef, go see a shrink. If the food at LaVar's restaurant is any good I'd still dine there but looking at the picture of LaVar you got to wonder if there's still some food left at the restaurant to serve.

you're right lavar, you are a jerk.and for bringing this out in the open,a very shitty and stupid businessman.i hope he gets canned off the pregame show. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
So....why does Comcast keep bringing back Redskins cast offs? so they can come back and bad mouth the team once and a while? They could do so much better simply dumping Brian and Lavar.
|
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
It's a shame to see a waste of talent and loss of a career such as this. I guess it's time to lose the dignity as well........

Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
That's funny. Warren Sapp was right when he called LaVar "Can't get right". It's interesting how he called Gibbs a coward AFTER he was already off the team. It's sad to see how far he's fallen. I was a HUGE Arrington fan when he was here.
HAIL!! |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Lavar makes up for his bad play with his mouth, which makes him look even worse.

No way! I hope he's on the pregame show at FedEx this Sunday Night! I've got a few things I need to say to him! |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
I remember all the LaVar Love that went on when Williams wouldn't play him. It was as if LaVar was some superhero who was being deeply wronged by an egotistical coach. Perhaps Williams was right and the LaVar Lovers were wrong. Hmmmmm, imagine that.
I still remember Gibbs' first draft day party held at FedEx. He, Buges and Williams were on a stage soaking in the fans excitement and someone shouted out to Gibbs "how you gonna get a pass-rush". Gibbs gave some answer about finding ways to maike it happen while behind his back Williams kept flashing "5" "6" with his hands. These guys came in thinking LaVar was gonna be the man. But just like with every other pro coach he had, LaVar was gonna be LaVar and damn the assignment. He has been bad mouthing Gibbs from the moment he left the Skins. At one of his first Giants' news conferences, he was asked who the worst coach he ever played for was and, without hesitating, he said Gibbs. I lost ALL respect for him after that. One last note: After leaving, the players were asked about his departure and one (identified only as a "team leader") responded along the lines "he made a couple of plays a game, but there were at least three games where his mistakes cost us the game." The LaVar Lovers always made excuses for this waste of talent, but I just think he was an overrated me-first player. If only Fletcher had LaVar's talent, he would be the best LB in the history of the game (not saying Fletch is not talented only that Fletch gets the most out every bit of his ability). |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Yawn.
Why anyone print or post such stupidity? Lavar is a no career has been. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Lavar just seems like the kind of guy who lives in the past, he just can't let go of the past. He's sitting there talking about being Lawrence Taylor...I mean c'mon Lavar. And there is no reason to call Joe a coward. That's just awful. He's lost all my respect.

Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
If you're going to spend your time in the D.C. area being a professional ex-Redskin, it's probably best to focus on positive things. Sonny Jurgensen hated George Allen so he chooses to talk about Lombardi instead. If he's asked about Allen he tells a funny story or he calmly admits that the two weren't a match made in heaven.
It must be hard to have to retire at such a young age, though. (although I would definitely give it a go for that money) Some people just can't overcome knee injuries at all. Or amybe they take longer than others and the team tries to push them to come back too soon, or they push themselves. All I know is that Lavar definitely lossed a step after he hurt his knee and without the speed, he didn't have much to recommend him as a player. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Gibbs ran LaVar out of town, and injuries and a motorcycle accident ruined his career. But was anyone here saying "fu*k him" and cursing his career and life while he was playing well for us? Smarten up people. Don't be so fairweather and shortsighted.
OH NO! Someone insulted Gibbs! Arm the Redskins fan militia! Everyone here needs to calm the eff down. LaVar is clearly frustrated with the way his career abruptly ended, and this is just sour grapes. Did anyone here think LaVar was a pathetic joke loser when he was crying while giving a speech at Sean Taylor's funeral? Or making pro-bowls for us? He should have kept his mouth shut, but gimmie a break folks. Some of these reactions are just lame. |

I don't understand what Lavar is doing, I heard him say he wasn't much of a redskins fan..so why the hell is he on CSN..and opening restaurants for redskins fans?

Exactly, GMscud Lavar should take this as an example. Clearly he isn't smart enough to realize how to behave professionally. Gibbs is a legend, and LaVar is not. Period. It is what it is, and there are repercussions when you call out someone the caliber of Gibbs. This isn't just something unique of the Skins, happens all over the league and the real world. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
^ No you know what's lame, Someone like me liking Lavar for some of the funny stuff he would say while with the team, thinking he would be a life long Skin like Green, for thinking he was a cool cat. Now every time he opens his mouth I'm not listening to what he says per say I'm waiting for the next Gibbs bash or Williams bash. No different then watching B-Bitch. It's a shame how I respected these guys for what they did on the field to only have them be disrespectful off the field.
I'm not saying all Skins media need to hire people who will suck up to the organization. It's nice to get another perspective on things but bashing the Skins or owner or Gibbs was not what I would have expected from former players who should be praising the Skins/owner for even allowing them the chance to play a game making millions of dollars instead of getting up every day at the crack of dawn like most of us busting our asses making pennies compared to them. I've got an idea for Comcast....you want someone who will mix it up about the Skins? How about dumping tweedle dee and tweedle dumb and simply find people or other media personalities from the opposing team and have them go head to head with our commentators. Now that would be a show. Every week having the opposing teams big name media show up and talk about the game and players. |

Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Im not puttin too much into this because writters hold quotes for a long time and put them out at the best time. This may have been said right after his NY departure or before that. The game was his life and to lose it so early its gotta hurt.

LaVar has become a crybaby and these particular comments are just sad, but I find it hard to believe than anyone with an ounce of football knowledge(including Gregg Williams), thinks that in 2005, Warrick Holdman was a better option at outside linebacker than LaVar Arrington. |
Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
What a colossal waste of talent. He thinks he is so smart, but on the football field he was a complete moron. Horrible instincts and zero discipline.

Re: Lavar Arrington calls Joe Gibbs a Coward
Lavar continues to make stupid decisions. He should not have critized Gibbs. Soon, he will ruin his broadcasting career also. Joe Gibbs record stands on its own, I am greatfull for him coming back to coach our team to two playoff appearances. Last year was one of his greatest achievements, taking them to the playoffs with half the offensesive line gone and half of the secondary gone, McIntosh gone and Sean Taylor murdered. It was amazing. Lavar needs to grow up, and realize that he simply did not live up to his legacy. If he can still play football like he claims, then he is the coward. He is loosing his fan base, fast. Me included.
