Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
So Soup mentioned in another thread that if Mix can be a legit #3 WR than why draft a WR in round 1 (as has been rumored) when DE is, in his opinion, a much more glaring need.
Which got me thinking waht if Chris Wilson can emerge at DE? (I'll leave my main man Alex Buzbee out of this conversation) So the question is-Who is More Likely To Have A Breakout Season in 2008? Anthony Mix or Chris Wilson? Define "Breakout"? Who knows, that's what makes polls fun :) Vote and Quarrel |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Hmmm...Wilson. Only because he's going to play more snaps, and his job isn't really in danger. If he has a 5-7 sack season, I think we would define that as a break out year, and even if Mix sees significant playing time, we don't know exactly how good he is yet.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
i went wilson too. wilson is a situational pass rusher so less would be expected of him. like gtripp said, 5-7 sacks would be great, and probably a lot more feasible than mix catching 60 balls it would take for many here to consider it a great year, due what seems to be high expectations
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I went with Mix. Moss and Randle El havent proved to be too durable and I think that translates into more chances for Mix. Wilson is gonna be a good player but I think we go DE in the first round which will limit his PT.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Wilson will have 8 sacks this year, mark it down.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Mix will prove he is the big target the Redskins are looking for.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I went with Mix just because I feel like there's more of a need at WR and I love Chris Wilson, but don't know if he can be a 3-down starter.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I say neither. I really like Reed Doughtry.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Wilson. I think Mix will get his opportunities and I think he has ONE game where he makes like 3 catches so the man crushes will get even more hardcore. Wilson will at least play in most games and have .5 to 1 sack a game he plays in.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Why not both?
I think what we do in the draft will have a big impact on how much these guys get to play and in turn how much they will be able to breakout. |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I like Wilson. The kid seems to have a good motor and with more opportunities will make some big plays this year.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
i took wilson. but, for the record, we all have some idea of what wilson is capable of in our system. any judgement of what mix may achieve next year (assuming he even makes the roster) is completely baseless.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I went with Mix because of the Red zone difference. In this new offense i see him being a big factor where it counts, putting points on the board.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Chris Wilson. No question. He barely played until the end of the year and picked up 4 sacks in the last few games. He could develop into a good pass rusher.
Mix has done nothing. I'm still just totally baffled why this guy is getting all this press. I mean if the guy had a few good catches or maybe even a TD I could understand a little hype. All this is a bit silly IMO. How about HB Blades as a candidate with Rocky coming off a knee injury? What's next, the Alex Buzbee breakout thread? |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I don't think Wilson will ever be a 3-down starter. He's just too light (he's listed as 240lbs). If breakout means, "great situational player", perhaps - he could be the next Chris Clemons (let's hold onto this one).
I think Mix has the greater potential for a real "breakout" year, in the sense of being a good everydown player. I guess I think he has a better shot of taking over the No. 2 WR spot than Wilson has of being an everydown player. I love Wilson. I think he will improve within his role, but only to a point. If he gets more than 8 sacks I'd be surprised, and he will never be a factor in the run defense (in fact, he would probably always be a liability). On the other hand, I just don't know what to expect from Mix - is he the next Kenaan McCardell or Rod Smith? Maybe. If that's the case, Mix still has a couple of years before his "breakout" should be expected: Rod Smith (undrafted): Year Age Tm G GS Rec Yds Y/R TD 1995 25 DEN 16 1 6 152 25.3 1 1996 26 DEN 10 1 16 237 14.8 2 1997 27 DEN 16 16 70 1180 16.9 12 1998 28 DEN 16 16 86 1222 14.2 6 McKardell (12 rnd pick)(by Washington): Year Age Tm G GS Rec Yds Y/R TD 1992 22 CLE 2 0 1 8 8.0 0 1993 23 CLE 6 3 13 234 18.0 4 1994 24 CLE 13 3 10 182 18.2 0 1995 25 CLE 16 5 56 709 12.7 4 1996 26 JAX 16 15 85 1129 13.3 3 1997 27 JAX 16 16 85 1164 13.7 5 Mix: Year Age Tm G GS Rec Yds Y/R TD 2007 24 NYG 4 0 3 39 13.0 0 2007 24 WSH 5 0 0 0 0 0 Let's keep Mix around, b/c it looks like WR's who are going to "breakout" do it around age 26-27 and are in their 3rd-4th year. Bottom line, I don't think either player will have a "breakout" year this year. Hopefully Mix progresses and is servicable (if we get >30 receptions out of him, I will be on the Mix man's bus NEXT year) and Wilson proves a cabable situational rusher. Expecting much more from either player is just wishful thinking without any real rational basis - which, of course, is why SS will tell you that Mix is the new Monk and Wilson the reincarnation of Manley. |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Mix is already a Warpath.net Hall of Famer so he's probably ineligible.. I'll go with Wilson because I think he's already shown glimpses of being exactly what we need, an edge rusher from the strong side..

Weight doesn't have to be everything for a defensive lineman, Robert Mathis is only 245. Although, he is in a defense where the defensive ends are more worried about putting pressure on the quarterback than stopping the run. |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Wilson. I honestly feel a bit responsible for the Mix hype to myself, I mentioned him several times last season when he was in on special teams tackles.
I mean he is decent on teams, but really people assume Mix is some kinda god. |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Not gonna play nostradamus here, but I think its easier for backup players to come in and be successful at DE than WR. It's a less high stress position and i think even meager production from a DE is more acknowledged. On the other hand, ppl expect TD's from a WR or at least the occasional big play. It seems like in this day and age if a young WR isn't a game-changer, then ppl tend to forget about him. And if he drops a critical pass or two, forget it, he might as well put his house up for sale cuz he is gonna be shipped outta there as soon as they can afford to cut/trade him.

Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
God, no offense to A. Mix but I just can't put too much faith in a guy that was recently let go (released/cut/not sure) by the Giants. Now i hope i'm wrong but I can't make an arguement as to why Mix is going to be a breakout player.
I'm going to go w/ Rocky Mac. I know he's coming off surgery but he's young and talented. I think we'll see a big year from him. |

I think this pic says it all as well.

ryan grant??? don't get me wrong, i think grant is a tad over-rated. but the fact is, just because a young guy is let go by a team does NOT mean he can't/won't go somewhere else and develop into a very productive player. there's so many variables at play, i can't even be bothered to try and list them. consider the fact that the baltimore ravens, a team that has NEVER had a franchise qb, cut derek anderson. you just never know...... |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
It's an interesting discussion because intrinsic to all this is what the coaches think of each player.
We've heard Cerrato pumping Mix up, but he's not the one who'll decide how many snaps Mix gets, Zorn will decide that. Likewise, Wilson was on the field at the end of last year, and GW was making those decisions. Now it will be Blache making the call. So if Blache has a lesser opinion of Wilson than GW did, Wilson won't be as likely to get on the field. I'm going to say Wilson is more likely to break out, simply because of snaps. I think Blache and GW think more alike about Wilson than Zorn and Cerrato probably do about Mix. Wilson's more likely to get the PT, in my opinion. |
Why not both?
I think what we do in the draft will have a big impact on how much these guys get to play and in turn how much they will be able to breakout.
Yea, like if we draft Limas Sweed, Mix will probably only be in when there are 5 WRs, and if we draft a DE, then Wilson will be used sparingly. |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I voted for Mix. I believe there is a strong chance we will go DE in the first or second round, likely limiting Wilson's playtime. I think Mix will step up and be a contirbutor in the Red Zone and as an X receiver in 3 & 4 wide packages.

But really who knows what's legit and what's a red herring? |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Landry's gonna have the breakout season, but i believe Wilson will have a better season than Mix based on a position by position analysis. There are just too many receivers I believed in and backed up...only to be embarrassed. (i.e. Taylor Jacobs(awesome in practice but could not produce at game time), Mike Espy(not his fault), Brandon Lloyd (his fault), David Patten(made a few clutch catches, but overall was a waste of time and $),etc... Rod Gardner (50/50 anyone?, hot potato, hot potato, stop.drop.and get paid, etc...) Anyway, I'd love to see Mix and Campbell hook it up, but I/m not going to hold my breath because he made a good play on SPECIAL TEAMS in the playoffs. ( in an overall nutshell: i guess i'm hopin' for a breakout season by everyone)

Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Chris Wilson...I know a lot of people feel he's undersized, but if he can add another 10-20 pounds without losing his speed, he will perfectly fit the mold of the lighter, athletic, speedy DE that the league seems to be gravitating toward (See Patrick Kerney)

Everybody thought that about Robert Mathis, , and now he's a premier DE, and there is only a five pound difference between the two, all Chris Wilson needs is a chance to be a full started and then he will emerge as a force on our defense. |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I say Mix purley because I think its easier for an average WR to have an impact, against an average defensive end. In addition, Mix is something that we don't have anywhere else on the team and thats a big target on offense. So he'll get more looks based strictly off that alone, and it will be much easier for them to shine. If Mix can be a contributor on offense, I think its a successful season for him. He wont need to have 900 yards and 8 TD's to make an impact. If he can just get open across the middle on some key third down situations, I'll be happy. A guy like Wilson has it a little tougher, because an average WR can still exploit different coverage schemes and poor defensive schemes, when Wilson will have to go one on one with some really good tackles week in and week out, and one on one, it will be tougher for him....If that makes sense.
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Wilson has been working with Blache since day one. Mix has to adapt to a new offense with a new OC and HC that is very offensive minded. I am not saying that Mix will not succeed, just that Wilson has a better shot at having a "breakout" season. Frankly, I hope for 10+ sacks for Wilson and 800+ yards for Mix, thus making them both breakout players.

Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
how about neither....
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Tough one, but I'll pick Mix, mostly for reasons already stated. The draft will tell us a lot. The success of Zorn's WCO and injury will also be a factor.
Wilson has been on the roster basically as a specialist, no? If the Skins go with a DE in Round 1 (as I hope), he'll have even more competition at his position. I'm sure he'll contribute, but isn't it likely that it will be mostly in situational formations? Mix has potential as the "big target" we've all heard about. Will he fit into the new offense? Tough to tell, but if the Skins pick a DB in Round 2 (and I hope it'll one who can return punts), shouldn't that give Mix the edge on his competition? On the other hand, Wilson is a known commodity -- and a valuable one. Until camp, or at least until the draft, talk of Mix is mainly speculation. |
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
I think that we've actually seen Wilson produce. Not to say that Mix can't, I just can't see him bringing the same level that Wilson does, hopefully I'll be proven wrong. Any updates on Wilson's strength and size so far?
|
Re: Soupermeister's Breakout Player of 2008 Poll
Forget Mix, I'm riding the Manningham wave all the way to the draft. Wilson gets my vote.
