new thread probation
Seems like the quality of new threads around here lately has been subpar at best. Too many duplicates, and too many worthless threads to put it bluntly.
In response to this please be aware that posting new threads is a privilege, one that will be taken away if you can't follow two simple guidelines. #1, before you post you really need to review the first page of threads on whatever forum you are posting on. (Sometimes when there is breaking news duplicates happen and that's understandable and I wouldn't penalize someone for that. Also, I'm not talking about similar topics that may have taken place weeks or months ago. A duplicate is an obvious repeated thread, usually some sort of news and it's right there in plain sight on the first page of threads.) #2 don't waste our time with whatever mindless thought is running through your head at the moment. Think before you post, try to imagine what type of discussion your thread will generate. Is it going to be meaningful discussion, or mindless banter? If it's the latter please don't bother. Again, posting new threads is a privilege, one that will be taken away if you can't follow the two simple guidelines outlined above. This "new thread probation" as I call it has actually been in place for a while, I just thought it was time to make everyone aware of the possible consequences of repeatedly posting duplicate or worthless threads. If your new thread privileges get taken away, it's for good. Sorry, no second chances. Any questions let me know. |
Re: new thread probation
DUMB THREAD!
JK, But seriously thanks Matty, it has been pretty bad lately. |

Re: new thread probation
Hey at least it gives Schneed something to do during the off season.

Re: new thread probation
Matty,
One thing that has confused me is that someone may post a speculation thread, then 70 posts in someone posts what actually happens to the story. Do you consider it a 2ndary thread when a speculation thread is answered definitively in a new thread? |

Re: new thread probation
This is nothing new.
Happens every off-season ("Can we draft him? Him? Him? Him? Him? Him?"), after every loss ("Fire the coach, bench the QB!") and whenever any player gets in trouble anywhere in the league ("hey y'all, think we should get him?") Of course, the Ramsey and Lavar threads will NEVER EVER DIE either. You're right about people needing to use their eyeballs and brains though. |

Yeah, everyone knows I like to jump on people about this... It's just annoying when people put little/no effort and then post something totally irrelevant just to be on the main page. Like... congrats. We were all Newbs... just be easy on the lazy threads. |

Re: new thread probation
And in those cases, one of the moderators will either merge the two threads and update the title or lock the speculation thread with a note indicating that the story is outdated. And if it's a confirmed story then we direct people to the new thread with the latest information.
But if you have multiple speculation threads, or multiple confirmed threads on the same topic those are duplicates. |
Re: new thread probation
Mod's I have a lot of new posts, but I haven't gotten to 10 yet I work 2 jobs have a 10 yr old and 2 yr old so I jump on when I can...But I'd like to talk more about personnel maybe things like are we going to keep R. 10 posts is really not all that hard to get to and I would forego trying to hijack a thread about board etiquette in the future. |
Re: new thread probation
well what can you really say.................i think you are right it has gotten really bad here of late hasn,t it.so i intend to lay low for a while and continue to wait for when the moment is right to post..or start a new thread.

We both know that is not true. But this might finally stop people from making dumb threads. |
Re: new thread probation
How about implementing a system where a Mod can approve the start of the tread before it posts instead of assuming that every single user will be able to follow this direction. It would be easier if a handful of people patrolled the masses, not to mention Mods have a better idea of what has already been (and will be) posted.

then the mods would get like tons of messages then they would have to read every single one and the aprrove or disapprove them. I wouldnt wish that on my worst enemy |
Re: new thread probation
Well, I am the first one who was begging for something like this.... but I hope that people get warnings ... not just in the threads, but in PM's.... Would hate to be kicked off of here... I just love everyone on here so much... I mean... your like family to me... I just love everyone....:vomit:
OK... maybe that was to much to shovel... but I do hope warnings are given. |

Is probation a warning or a suspension of privileges or both? |

you lose the ability to create new threads |

Re: new thread probation

I'm just clarifying here. Is this probation something that will eventually allow you to post new threads again if you shape up? I'm just thinking people would want to know that there is some kind of warning system or whatever. |

Probably not. |
Re: new thread probation
Hey Matty I don't think I am asking the right question. Do the Mods let say some new eager person know that they are skating on thin ice before they get a very important privilege revoked for good?
|

It depends. We'll look at all situations on their own. I'm not saying anyone who posts a duplicate or questionable thread is going to get dinged. We typically try to give everyone a chance to straighten out. |
Re: new thread probation
Got it. I was just kind of concerned about new people who want to contribute, but just don't quite get it and are maybe a little to eager to make a new thread which ends up being a weak thread. Not worried of course about the ones who are just plain out of control.

Re: new thread probation
what is the best way to check and make sure a thread hasnt been already posted on the same topic without having to manually search?

Matty, maybe you should take just a moment to give a few examples of just what is considered a "worthless thread" It has become apearent that the people who post these type threads don't know the difference. I think one previous poster gave some examples of the type threads you're refering too, but they would be better served hearing it from you. |
Re: new thread probation
Don't know if you can do this or not...
But for those under 1,000 posts or something like that... you should temporarily redirect the user to the search page, or some kind of "Are you sure your not posting a retarded thread?" pop up message... If people are too lazy to use google, they're probably too lazy to read the forum guidelines. This might be able to curb some of the duplicates and such... |
Re: new thread probation
I never understood the obsessive desire for thread creation. I think I've created maybe 5 threads since joining this site -- maybe.
If I was the only person responsible for creating new topics, I'd could probably only think of 10% of the topics we already have available for discussion. I guess it's just me, but there is hardly ever a topic that I want to discuss which isn't already being discussed here. |

It's just that satisfaction they get from the feeling of being first, to the point where it becomes an obsession. |
