I notice on each persons post now to the left is a Scales symbol. What does this populate?

I think it's a way to give feedback on each post, and it adds to an overall "reputation" on the site. Probably a good way to cut back on junk posts.

Well we used to have this (before you arrived Hooskins, I believe) and it wasn't anything great. We're trying it again, but I'm not anticipating great results

On that note though, in exchange for some reputation points my way I'll keep you on the "Do Not Ban" list :)

I agree that it's not likely to have any major impact, but I want to also express that I 100% agree with the spirit of the move. Now that the season has started, we are tending to see more and more emotional posting, where people are just blowing off steam after losses or simply celebrating after wins. That may make you feel good, but it clutters the board and makes people have to sift through more crap in order to get to the quality and thoughtful discussion that may be buried somewhere within the board.

Here's some more info regarding the user reputation system:

vBulletin's user reputation system provides a way of rating users based on the quality of their posts. Users on your forums can add or subtract reputation points from other users by clicking the reputation link in their posts.

User reputations allow the users in your community to tell vBulletin which users are quality and which users are not. And in response to user feedback, vBulletin has the ability to label and reward users for the quality of their posts, as is indicated by their reputation.

By the way let's try to not make this a personal thing. If the negative comments get too out of control we'll have to take away the ability to leave negative reputation points. The point here is to reward people for quality posts, not to necessarily punish people.

I'm all for anything to discourage retarded posting. I wish there was a "F... your post" factor to it.

Like when someone posts something either induced by an alcoholic binge, blind rage, or simply just posts some nonsensical gibberish...they get a special cookie. A crap cookie.

I kind of agree with SS, in that the results will have little impact on the quality of posts... but I think it does provide a nice easy private feedback on a post. Who knows, it might encourage those who are new when they post something constructive... it might even help newbies fight the impulses to start three, "Our offense is more pathetic than my life's goals" threads.

For some strange reason my first thought was if I could get one or two other people to give rep points back and forth, over and over again for no reason and see how long it would take to completely devalue the entire system.

That's something I'll monitor, obviously any abuse of the system will be dealt with accordingly.
