Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Maybe the reason we signed McCardell is to implement a five receiver set.
The spread offense is really working for the teams that use it from college to the pro’s. |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Probably not.
They signed him due to Moss being nicked up, and overall lack of depth behind Moss and ARE. |

Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Guess Brandon Lloyd really pissed somebody off,Again.Mccardell is a good WR but my god all we heard about BL was he was Great with SF and he made tons of plays, which he did,BUT come on put him in the game stretch the field, between Moss and Lloyd we would have a hell of a Deep threat tandem.Just passing time til 4:00 when I can go-
|
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
No Matty pretty much hit it on the head. Reche Caldwell was signed cause Lloyd couldnt get on the field, and MCcardell was signed cause Moss isnt 100%.
|
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Thats insane....no chance at all.
What they should do is have a 2 back set with ARE, Moss and Cooley in all the time. There are your 5 best ball handlers and it give you the option to run... Why we haven't seen this is beyond me. |

LOL we can't even send Cooley out in pass patterns right now due to the need to keep him in to help out with blocking and you think they are going to start running 5 wides? |

Not sure that his numbers were that great in SF and the think was that he had talent that SF was not using in him. I don't think we can say (fro sure) that he ticked someone off as much as he is just not showing the coaches anything in pratice. |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
The spread offense really works well with New England.
It would be nice to see our offense move that way. |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
New England isn't missing their entire right side along the offensive line and they also don't have a QB with 10 career starts.

Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
If it's 5 WR, my guess is one of them WON'T be Lloyd. Check out this depressing tidbit from JLac's blog (the stuff about Campbell working out AFTER practice with his WRs is great--the absence of Lloyd is not):
Posted at 11:35 AM ET, 10/ 2/2007 Things That Make You Go Hmmmm Anyone else wonder if just maybe the fact that Clinton Portis has tendinitis now might have something to do with why he wasn't in the game for those final two plays in Week 3? I mean, unless he hurt himself slipping in the locker room after the game or something, then you'd have to imagin he got hurt in the actual game itself, right? Yeah, I know Betts and Portis and "interchangeable" and all, but some players out here believe Portis re-injured his knee in the fourth quarter of that game, forcing him to the sidelines in that final drive. I am told that Jason Campbell may have said as much on the radio this morning. Hey, I get why teams hide injuries, etc., but Portis, Gibbs and Bubba Tyer all said the tailback was perfectly fine after that game, and in the ensuing days. Bottom line: It's no surprise the tendinitis flared back up - that's what it does and Portis plays a brutally physical position - and like the team said in the offseason, it's much harder to control the rest and rehab during the season than it is before the grind begins. Also, forgot to mention this yesterday, but well afer practice Campbell and Todd Collins were working with the receivers in shorts and t-shirts, running lots of routes, working on timing. Now, Santana Moss - who very well could miss Sunday's game with a groin injury - was not taking part, obviously, and neither was one other wide receiver, for what it's worth. Randle El, Thrash, McCardell, and Caldwell were excitedly doing the extra work. Maybe it doesn't mean anything, but the omission of the other healthy wideout did not go un-noticed around here, with hiim back in the locker room while the rest of his position group was working. Redskins Insider |

Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Can we trade Lloyd before the deadline!
|
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
I just read this too. Loyd isn't even trying anymore to impress the coaches I bet. He's gonna get paid & he knows it. If he had any foresight, he would think about his value after this season. AT this rate he's on track to get released then signed by some team to a 1 yr. vet min. deal.
|
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Maybe he wants to get paid and then quit football to become a singing star? Hammer Time!
|
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Lloyd knows he wont see the field unless the guys ahead of him all drop dead, so he's gonna get paid and be on his way out to prove himself elsewhere. Why would he put himself through extra work when he knows he won't see the light of day from his dog house?
It's a damn shame that someone with so much potential has pretty much shiat the bed while here in Washington. I like McCardell and Caldwell for depth, but they are just a very short term fix. I'd like to see the Skins go out and get a bona fide #2, whether via Free Agency or through the draft. |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Is BL on special teams coverage at all? Ive never seen him on kick offs or punt coverage.

Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Lloyd said on Monday that if McCardell can help the Redskins win, then he welcomes the move.
"Whatever we can do to win--that's my motto," Lloyd said. "I'm just focused on this season, this season only, and hopefully everything will work out." Said Gibbs: "With Brandon, he has been in there on a number of plays, but we just haven't got hooked up on him. As a matter of fact, Chris Cooley only has five catches right now, which is disappointing. "We're hoping that Brandon can be more productive as we go." New Look At the Wide Receivers Honestly ever time Llyod says somthing he gives the right answear. I really hope its sincere. Do you think there is any trade value left for Lloyd |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Lloyd on the open market...the Skins would have to pay someone to take him off their hands. A case of Schlitz and a can of Beer Nuts is about what he's worth.
His contract is worth way too much for someone to take a "chance" on him. Why trade for him when the league knows damn well that he's gone after the season. |

Why we haven't seen this is beyond me.
Thats an interesting thought. I think that would be a good formation for this team (Im assuming you are alluding to a wish-bone type of formation). With Betts and Portis, and sometimes Sellers in there, they could do many versatile misdirection plays, which they seem to love (ie. the counter). And besides that, on passing plays it would be nice to have Betts in there for a check down route and portis in for blocking/play action. Also Portis, though his hands aren't as sure as Betts, is a threat for a first down on little screens and other short passes out of the backfield. Do many NFL teams utilize this formation? If not how come? If so why don't the Redskins? |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
This why I think it makes sense to go with the spread offense.
1. split Cooley out to get sombody tall as a reciever (mismatched with a linebacker) 2.mismatches all day with cooley, moss,AR, BL, McCardell 3.portis banged up (now power running game) 4. Line Banged up (now power running game) 5. Betts is better in space (you can rotate him in and out) 6.prevent blitzes (if they blitz sombody will be open on a quick slant) 7.get the ball in the hands of the playmakers in space more often. |

We're missing two starters on the right side and we have a QB with 10 career starts. You can bet teams would tee off with blitzes all day long. |

He will make the wrong read from time to time and kill us. At the same time, our line is too banged up to play "Redskins Football" power running an all.... The Skins need to play to their strengths, which unfortunately right now seems to be low scoring games with few turnovers that keep the opposing team off the field. Running some with a shot deep from time to time. I am scared this week that the Skins will not be able to keep up with the scoring that Detroit will throw at them. If the Skins don't score 30 points against the Lions, they will lose. |

So we might as well start implementing it now. Heck if Appalachian State personel can figure it out .Don't you think our professionals and our coaching can do it? |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
I can't believe we gave up a 2nd and 4rth rounder for that donkey...what a disgrace!!! It's aquisitions like lloyd and archuleta that shows how incompetent are front office can be. Yes, we have made good aquisitions as well (Fletcher, Washington, Are), but we still are searching for answers at the wideout position and will continue to....Lloyd might as well pack up and get the hell out of town. . . . Hail the the Skins, scalp them Lions -GHOLLA

Campbell has shown no problem beating the blitz so far. He's actually gotten outstanding protection since he became the QB, and his decision making is generally outstanding for his age and experience.
He's just got to complete more passes, stop forcing the ball into bad matchups, and do the above especially well on third down. All that said, Yoder should play on nearly every passing down to help in protection and be a safety valve. Cooley needs to be out in the pattern, and 5 guys running routes with only 5 guys blocking is usually a recipe for disaster. 4 guys in the pattern with 6 guys blocking tends to yield more success. |

He's too worried about pass protection. Al S. would do it casue that's what he likes to do. I would at least like to see more 4 wr sets and try running some out of these formations. That would help CP get in space a bit. |

If you have five guys in the pass pattern , you cannot pick up the blitz , your qb gets beaten to death . You also lose time of pos. , tire your defence . JC has only 10 starts , he would get killed if we went to the spread ,,, anyone remember Detroit and Atlanta playing us in the 91 playoffs ? As great as W. Moon / J. Kelly were , they always struggled to score pts and sustain drives against the better defences . I know pts can be scored with the spread offence , but I boubt Moss / R El would hold up to the hits that they would take game after game . |

Hey I wasn't advocating using a 5 wr set I merely asked the question why are we so enamored with Max protection. A 4 wr set would be more realistic and I would really just like to see more three wr sets even. Our passing game has not been attacking the middle of the field. Cooley has 5 catches. There is something wrong with that. We don't have a consitent over the middle wideout. The smaller receivers need to be protected and they can't go over the middle all day, but we really need somebody who can. Caldwell and or McCardell will hopefully perform that job although Caldwell is soft, but if one of these guys can open the middle some more from a three or even four wideout set that would be really good for us. |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
Maybe we can sign another former Redskins receiver

Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
JG loves the max protect, no doubt. And there's something to be said for it, after watching the gints DESTROY the iggles pass protection. And just cast your memory back to the bad ole days of the ole ball coach and his attempts (successful, it seems) to crush the life out of one PATRICK RAMSEY. (All right! A Ramsey thread!) I'm all for expanding the variation of our passing game--we need it!--but there are risks involved.
I heard that Taylor Jacobs got hurt just because that post appeared. He's kinda fragile, you know. |
Re: Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?
This guy B-Loyd is starting to piss me off with his lack of production on the field. Hey dude, have some freaking pride in yourself, and catch some passes for your team! Man-up, and help your team win!

That often means 3 step drops with a quick decision to let it fly. Not sure whether Campbell is far enough along in his development to be put in that situation. Short, quick passes haven't exactly been his strength so far. As for Jacobs, let me remind everyone that Osi Umenyiora was available in the 2nd round of the 2003 draft when the OBC just had to have his Gator boy. Aside from Darrell Jackson, can anyone name a WR or QB of note that Spurrier developed? (And don't say Reche Caldwell). |
