Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
Someone in SD needs to get fired and I'm not talking about Norv. What a dysfunctional team and disgraceful performance!
Someone in SD needs to get fired and I'm not talking about Norv. What a dysfunctional team and disgraceful performance!
A.J. Smith should lose his job immediately, first for firing Marty, then for thinking that Norv was his best choice. Somewhere, Marty is smiling tonight.

Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
If the trend continues, it won't be long before Norv loses control of the team. Fans are calling for Marty already.
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
Is anyone really surprised??
I mean c'mon... It's NORV!! LOL |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
yeah norv was a rediculous choice, but marty would be tough to be around... he's kind of a douchebag.
they have the talent, but bringing in norv was stupid. There were many much better coaches they couldve gone after... including jim mora jr, who I think wouldve fit there much better... |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
I'm starting to wonder how much talent they have. Their WRs are terrible, but they do have the best RB and TE in the game.
I think what was really exposed was that defense. Merriman can't keep it going without his roids it seems =p |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
The chargers suck and the Padres choked! It's not a good day to be a San Diego Fan!
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
I think it goes to show just how much the Coach or coaches impact their team...and obviously immediately!!! This is the second week they've fucked me in my football pool! But can you imagine being a die-hard Chargers fan going into the playoffs last year 14-2....and since it's just been complete hell!!!!!

I heard an interview replayed on the ESPN pregame show today and they asked Marty if he took any satisfaction in the Chargers losing. He was almost in tears talking about his ex players. Way to go A.J. |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
This is the second time an owner has fired Marty foolishly!
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
SD knocked me out of my suicide pool today also.. I should have KNOWN better than to trust Norv.. Worst head coach in NFL history.
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
Let's be honest. Norv is a seriously great guy. Anyone who has ever met him will atest to that. Most people acknowledge he is a pretty good O coordinator. But why anyone thought he could head coach any team after what he did here and in Oakland is a moron. Just a total dip sh*t moron. AJ Smith is done. There is no way they can not fire him. I'd fire him and Norv now and bring backMarty tommorrow for whatver it costs to get him. What a joke. I cry every time I think how close the Cowboys were to hiring Norv.
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
Did you see that (annoying) Keith Oberman "worst man in the NFL" thing at the half of the gints-iggles? It was the owner and GM of the chargers in a tie.
Marty for the ole ball coach is the meddling of a young billionaire who does want his team to succeed, and thinks he can do it the same way he plays fantasy football. Marty for Norvil is just plain stupid. After 14-2? And they let all the good assistants go before canning marty, to make it worse. And the Padres are looking to choke. Tough times in SD. |

Sometimes in the NFL (and in all sports) teams just don't play to the same level as they did the previous year. For what ever reason. They loose their edge. Humans are not machines. 14-2 is really really tough to do in the NFL. You have to be really good but you also have to have the ball bounce your way. It looks like the running game is sputtering and the passing came can't pick up the slack although today LT went off. They have a young QB who is turning it over and some WR's that are very questionable. Plus they made a bad mistake and let go of Donnie Edwards. Then you fire Marty and you loose both coordinators. Chargers had nowhere to go but down. |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
They should fire Turner and hire Spurrier. LOL.
(then put Petitbon and Robiskie on the staff!) |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
I bet Bill Cowher will be enticed to the Chargers next year. How can someone NOT want to come out of retirement for such a talented team?

I'd say they're more than down and clearly not playing up to potential. That seems to be a theme for Norv's team. |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
We cannot discount the Chargers defense though. Ted Cottrell was brought in, and I've heard that the San Diego defense is really what's different from last year. I'd bet the Chiefs don't score 30 points in a game for another two seasons.
Still, the team appears to suffer from the general malaise that Norv's teams are famous for. It's a long season though, and something tells me that the Bolts are going to right the ship at some point. There's just too much talent for it not to happen. |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
I'm going to go out on a limb here, the Chargers probably lost their window of opportunity to play in a Super Bowl for the next several years. And this is the arrogance of AJ, in his mind this is a team that is 14-2, surely they canl bounce back and be just as good next year. Look at how Gruden has struggled since taking over Dungy's team in Tampa. Look how long it took Dungy with the same squad, same QB to finally get the Colts to a Super Bowl. Marty has been too close too many times for you not to let him ride this thing out for another two or three years. You don't get this close, and completely overhaul the front office. No way, no how.
I'll bet in ten -fifteen years from now, this will go down as the one of the worst GM moves ever. Better yet, I'll bet LT will put up with this crap for about another two years before he starts to demanding a trade. |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
The most surprising thing to me is how poorly Phillip Rivers has played. I thought Norv would at least be able to maximize his potential. If he can't even get Rivers going then what is Norv "the QB guru" Turner good for? Its gonna get ugly in SD pretty quickly. Losing to the Chiefs at home might just bring the whole house down.
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
As far as working with Phillip Rivers, I think you need to give him more than four weeks to make big strides. I think their offense is a bit down, but their defense is the big problem. They are getting torched.
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
Rivers is still a young QB and Marty ball really kept him handcuffed for the most part last year, and probably wisely so.
I think the Chargers will get on track eventually but it better be soon for their sake. |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
It seems like a lot of the younger QBs are coming back down to earth this year. Rivers, Alex Smith, Leinart...
|

Mora Jr. can't keep his mouth shut and he'd be shopping himself for another gig if he failed (and he would) to produce after a season or two. Plus, he's always got some players jock to sniff and can't seem to put the whole team's interests ahead of his "star" players (i.e.-Michael Vick). |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
So now the question is, where does Marty coach next?

Look, Norv is not a good coach, and he's not going to do his team any favors strategically. But if his offenses were able to overcome his lack of motivation (which they clearly did), then theres no way we can blame him for what's happening to his defense or offensive line. Losing his coordinator contributed, but this defensive collapse was predictable by statistical formula (notice the date). Now should Norv collect some blame for what's happening on the offensive end? Some, yes for sure. But I believe that given time, Rivers is going to get very hot and this team will win 8-9 games this year, which isn't too bad by any standard (also not too good by any standard). People like to credit Norv for natural player progression, and blame him for natural unit regression, even though he likely has little to do with neither. He just happens to be an uninspired coach trying to make a living. He is not going to hurt or help his teams win or lose. Thus, it's up to the team leaders to get this ship righted in SD. |

I mean c'mon... It's NORV!! LOL
Amen. This is the guy who was deemed "An offensive Genius" for winning with a team comprised of Troy Aikman, Emmit Smith and Michael Irving. It doesn't take a genius to win with that talent. It takes a genius to win with a Mark Rypien. Norv stank up every head coaching job he's had. He's 3 for 3 now. I know you can't replicate 14-2, but you shouldn't fall so fast. J-Dawg |

What? A crazy must have it his way dictator for another crazy must have it his way dictator? Granted Marty is more well liked in the NFL, but he's not going to a place that already hates their coach...if he does, he's a complete moron. |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
You're right....not a good fit at all. Hell if the Chargers continue to suck, maybe they'll fire Norv and bring him back!!!
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
norv was the correct replacement for wade phillips, not marty Schottenheimer. With all those talented guys they need a disciplinarian, Marty was that.....just wait until merriman beats some guy to death in a bar after a loss
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
I think it would be, "...why hast thou stunk-up the joint?"
|
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
In the NFL, you get the opportunity to learn from other people's mistakes. Why would they hire Norv? If you want to know if he can motivate your players, just watch his after game press conferences every time he's been a headcoach. I wanted to quit, and I wasnt even a player. He's boring, he doesnt instill confidence. Even the coaches I hate in this league do that to some point.
It's called eye contact Norv. Try it when addressing reporters you scared little girl. And then he's been labeled an offensive genius. He must be an idiot savant. He should focus more on his strengths, quarterbacks. Let someone with a spine manage the team. |
I think it would be, "...why hast thou stunk-up the joint?"
No 70Chip..... It's more like the joint stunk up the joint.......:Smoker: Then there was poor norv? Getting ready for his next J.O.B. Damn norv does really well at the offensive cordinator job, but when it comes to head coach material....can't get it done! |

I'd hire him as a QB coach in a second! He would do wonders for Campbell! |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
marty, waiver wire tony banks, and one audible... and he still managed to win 8 games.
some guys can coach, some can't. |
Re: Norvel...Why Has Thou Stunk-Up Joint?
marty, waiver wire tony banks, and one audible... and he still managed to win 8 games.
some guys can coach, some can't.
Marty had the #8 ranked defense that year. While he did have Banks, we got a (at the time) Redskins record 1432 yards out of Stephen Davis. In fact, the team is similar to what we have now. A strong D, and a Weak O. Strong running game, and a weak passing game. Schottenhiemer had no real talent on offense (minus Davis), while Gibbs has a ton of talent he isn't taking advantage of. I fully think Schottenhiemer did a great job with what he had, problem was, Bruce Smith and more importantly, Darryl Green hated him. Green is an icon to us. He can do no wrong and when he came out publicly and said he doesn't like the way schott. was doing things, something totally uncharacteristic of Green...that sealed Marty's fate. Also, losing 5 out of the gate hurt, but then he won 5 straight, that helped. But then he lost 3 of 4 and the Skins were not in the playoff picture anymore hurt a little too. But mainly it was the players that did him in...and more importantly, Marty's wierd rules and inability to be flexible that killed him here. The SKins were smart to cut him loose, just as the Giants would be smart to cut Coughlin loose. |
