The Never Ending Thread Causing Server Problems?
 

Hola,

The 5000 Post Never Ending Thread is probably taxing the server every time someone views it.

I'm would rather have that thread deleted than have to refresh a page only to see the Server Busy message.

If I'm dead wrong, Please feel free to flame me.

I have noticed the "Server Busy" message popping up A LOT lately. It's really annoying; I'm sitting here in my cubical trying to slack off like normal and I can't because I get that message.
What am I supposed to do when I can't get on this site, work? HA, hell no! This is American people! The U-S-and A, Greatest Country in the world!!

That thread is a damn IM message, delete it I am sick of not being able to get on.

EQ, Jasnro, Warpath and Anrgy should get yahoo or aol im names and use that.

If the thread is banished. Will the posts in the thread not count in post counts?

I highly doubt that it makes much difference. I am constantly confused as to why we get the server busy message. Supposedly we have a good server and VBulletin is not a killer, especially since Matty has trimmed a lot. Even with thousands of people accessing this site simulatneously it should not have issues. I am a web application developer so I should know something about this. One of life's mysteries.

Seriously, I have been trying to get on here all day. I got in this morning after a while of trying and got to read a few posts in the uniform thread, then the server was "busy" again for a few more hours until now. I bet I'll be blocked out again after posting this. Whatever the problem is, needs fixed, whether it takes blowing away a pointless thread or not. It's frustrating.

How big a thread is doesn't make any difference, it's all about how many people are hitting the site at one time. Viewing a thread isn't the problem, posting is though. So yeah, constant posting doesn't help especially when it's meaningless crap that should be taking place on IM.

Unfortunately you're right. It'd be great to put that thread to sleep. But then someone will just start it right back up again.

I admit I have had some fun on The Never Ending Thread. I knew a thread against that thread would start soon. I'm actually surprised it took this long. I am indifferent, although I will say if only 5 or so people ever post on it and it slows down the site for hundreds of other users, then it should go bye-bye.

I don't see the problem when normally we are only posting at night when most of you are asleep.
When I get the server busy message it's during the day, or peak times, and no one is using the never ending thread.

So there are no problems with it, or the functionality of this site because of it.

PS- You're more than welcome to come and discuss anything you would like too.

I don't understand the hate associated with the thread.
Fact is, 95% of the posts on that thread are after you are all in bed. It has ZERO affect on this site.
Matty already explained it's not about viewing, it's about posting. There are 5 times as many posts about Brunell hating that slows the server down. I don't recall the server being too busy because of the never ending thread.

I honestly think it does cause problems for the server every time someone views the thread.


The site is based on queries. each page has a list of PHP commands that query a database on the server. Every time someone opens the thread, the server has to calculate how many posts there are, how long is each post, How many post should be displayed per page, How many pages and so on.

In theory, 1 person opening that 5000 post thread uses as much computational power as 1000 people opening a 50 post thread.

It's been years since I've done any PHP/MySQL programming and i've never installed Vbulletin; Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The server probably has more than enough power. Matty is probably correct when he says viewing the thread doesn't cause problems.

btw, There's no hate for the thread content, just the number of posts in it.

In all honesty, if someone can prove that it does cause a lot of issues with the server, then by all means, lock it and let it die. But I just don't think it's the problem. Like matty said, it's the posting that is the issue, not the views.

Matty, SS, or any other mod go ahead and kill it. I promise not to create another one. I am all for the majority wins. If the majority feel that it is taking away from the site, then by all means go ahead and get rid of it. Those of us who want to chat late will just use PM's instead. I appologize for the moster and for the headaches that it may or may not have caused.

I only ask that if you do kill it that it is deleted entirely and not closed and placed in thread hell.

I think we may lock it on Sept. 9 at 12:01am as an honorary official mark to end the Redskins off/preseason and the first day of their 2007 season.
