Surprise Cuts

I'm not sure that we will have any surprises that don't make the team, but who would be the best candidates? Cutting Collins would not be very shocking, but if they cut Brunell I think that would be a big surprise because we all know that Gibbs really values his leadership. That would mean that Bramlett really steps up or something we don't really expect.

Re: Surprise Cuts

Nice thread. I think anyone on the line (Salavea, Wynn, and Daniels) could be surprising. And of course every year we ask ourselves is this the year Rock and/or Ade get cut.

:food-smil You want to talk big surprise.... what if they cut Portis...lol.... I know it won't happen.... but now lets see how many people attack me for this.

I would HATE to see that happen... but it is always a realistic possibility

If for any reason I could see them making some cuts to make room for Cooley. I could see Big Joe going sadly.

Ade Jimoh or Thrash. The skins are loaded at Corner and WR.

That wouldn't be a surprise.

Re: Surprise Cuts

Rock and Thrash solidify their roster spot ever year with their ability to play Special Teams. Those are the cuts that would shock me. Another thing that would suprise me is if one of those younger no name DE's makes the 53 man roster.

Re: Surprise Cuts

I can see some vets getting axed but not any that will be a surprise. As already mentioned: Rock C., J.T.,Ade, Wynn, Salavea. Salavea might actually be a surprise. I expect him to make the roster. The cap dictates a lot of what they do with these older guys, but i defer to Scneed, Canuck on that front.

True story that I love telling. I got to work a birthday party at Portis' house last year on the last day of cuts. All the RBs and WRs were there. The whole time I kept looking at Rock and wondering if he'd been cut since I had been there all day and didn't know who were in the final cuts. He looked sorta down but not really. I was too afraid to ask though. I kept thinking...man what if this guy just got cut. That's the one thing I really remember from that party was just wondering the entire time if the dude has just been sh*t canned. Oh yeah and 5'7" my ass. The guy is no taller than 5'5".

+1 Jimoh and Thrash are the gunners on special teams and are very consistent performers. I too would be shocked if they got the axe.

Re: Surprise Cuts

I think Trash will stay because he is still an adaquate receiver and plays great STs. Ade is not a very good corner. If he was a better coverage guy i could see him staying but with all the good CBs we aquired this offseason, I think at least one of them can replace AJ on teams.

You have lost your flippin' mind! THE ADE is a great corner - did you not see him shut down Larry Fitzgerald last year? And he's the best player the skins have on special teams.

Every year everyone talks about THE ADE as the first player to be cut and each and every year he makes the team. I think Carlos Rogers has a better chance of being cut before THE ADE.

yeah, i couldnt imagine where we would have been last year without "the ade." ......maybe the playoffs.

Re: Surprise Cuts

Cutting Rock would horrible. Rock busts his ass and makes plays on special teams. And, you know a little guy like him must have an excellent work ethic, they need Rock around so other guys learn how to work just as hard as he does.

enel 07-24-2007 12:14 PM

Re: Surprise Cuts

Rock ain't going anywhere. He was straight cash on ST last year. Thrash is safe... He's a solid ST'er and probably our biggest WR (not counting Cooley (TE)).

Big Joe might go, if there is questions on his health. Wynn is a great guy but I'm not sure how much he has left and what he contributes to the DL...

I would like to ESPY get his chance this year on the roster of 53...

Ade could be suseptible if the other CB's and newly drafted LB's play good ST.

Re: Surprise Cuts

Boschetti, Salavea, D. Evans, the Ade & J. Butler or D. Macklin, Fox and/or Doughty on D.
On O, I can't name all the backups we signed, but I don't see any real name cuts there.

I threw the ADe in there cause he's got a lot of competition, but he should be the front runner in the #5 cb competition. I'd be shocked if he moved up to 4 ahead of Macklin & Butler.

Re: Surprise Cuts
James Thrash?
Thrash was our best receiver last year. Of course, Moss will easily rebound and be better this year, but I think Thrash at least deserves strong consideration for the No. 2 receiver job.

Not sure what hes done so wrong that he doesn't deserve a look.

Re: Surprise Cuts

I don't think Macklin makes the roster. Uhh, Stoutmire or Fox might go also. Todd Yoder may get the axe, and Collins is good as gone.

Cutting Rock would just be stupid.

Re: Surprise Cuts

I don't think any major surprises are in the works unless a vet D linemen gets cut or Brunell does go to the Falcons and we keep Palmer on the active squad. It is a gamble, but I sort of like that scenario, just in case JC falters we may have a young kid that still can be groomed for the QB position just in case.

Macklin will be here 100%.
I think Stoutmire makes the team.
Cartwright and Thrash aren't going anywhere.

Training camp FRI!!! IT IS ON!

Macklin is on a one year deal. He'll have his shot in camp, but unless he improved immensely this offseason, he won't be taking Butler's roster spot, nor Jimoh's.

i wish they cut rogers. that guy makes me think gwill is a retard sometimes. hopefully he will play better this year because if he doesnt his ass will be gone next year. watch out for lemar marshall getting cut if rocky is as advertised......i still dont think rocky is good, he never stood out in college and so far he hasnt made any plays that make me think he will be good.......GOD I PRAY OUR D IS BADASS like the two years prior to last.

Why would they cut Rogers? Other than him not being able to catch an interception when it hits him in the hands, he really isn't that bad for a 3rd year corner. There are worse in the NFL than Rogers. Also, there is no way that they will cut Marshall. Think about it why cut a player that is as versitile as Marshall? He can play all three LB positions, weak side, middle, and strong side. Not only that but did you ever hear of having depth? I mean having a starter as your backup is a pretty good situation to be in...

First of all, Rogers isn't as bad as you think. Even if Rocky keeps his position Marshall will not be going anywhere because of his versatility and knowledge of the defense. While I agree that Rocky never really stood out in college the Redskins saw something in him to make him their 1st pick in the second round two drafts ago.

Notice the passes def last year.

Well, under the salary cap rules, the people that are signed for the league min don't hit your salary cap numbers. They only count the top paid players (I forget the exact amount of people they count). So to drop Macklin would be stupid cause he doesn't cost us a thing.

The Top 53 count towards the cap. So Macklin counts if he makes the final roster.

That's a great link...thanks. there is a lot of info there.
I wonder if it was like that under the old CBA? Cause I distinctly remember it. Does anyone else remember that?

Well, then I take back the macklin comment...however, since you are required to hire someone at the league minimum, Macklin shouldn't be worried.

That sounds about right.

I just had no idea how much they changed in the new CBA.
