US Open Picks

Tiger's game has been off the past several weeks and this tall rough will do him in. Phil has that wrist injury which could help him by trying to stay in the short stuff but I don't think he will get it done and he could miss the cut. I'm going with a no name for this one and a no pick.

Re: US Open Picks

Going with a no name is fine but come on, you have to name somebody? I personally think Tiger is due for a US open victory. It's been since Bethpage in 02. Plus he has won a tournament since the masters I believe. So I'd go with him. But my darkhorse is Henrik Stenson. Plus, Adam Scott is going to have to make a push one of these days on a major sunday.

Re: US Open Picks

I am taking David Toms in this one. He keeps the ball in play and can putt the lights out when he is on fire. US Open golf is all about keeping the ball in the fairway and making PARS. Toms does that well and could win and should be in the top 5 on Sunday.

Re: US Open Picks

Phil does have the wrist thing, but l'll be rooting for him anyway. Keeping it in the middle this week is the deal, espicially for him, with the bum wrist. That rough is brutal.

If he can make it through Sunday I think he'll be in the mix & after last year "STUPID" mistake, I'm sure this would be the sweetest victory to date if he can pull it off. I look for Furyk to play well, this course sets up nicely for him.

Re: US Open Picks

Talking about Oakmont, did anyone catch the Johnny Miller special on the golf channel last night. I've been watchin Johnny M for a long time, what a good, straight shooting, stand up tell it like it is guy.

And the Open he won at Oakmont in 73 was truely UNREAL!

Geeeez, a darn 288 yard PAR 3, my lord and the greens like a waxed bowling lane. I will really be surprised if however can tame this beast, can get in the RED Sunday. Whoever, wins on Sunday afternoon will be LUCKY to be +2. GOOD LUCK. This is probually the toughest challenge in golf bar none.

Toms doesn't have the length off the tee though. If you look at his record in majors he has traditionally played best at the PGA, which has historically emphasized shotmaking over length (although clearly that's changing). Still, I do think Toms has one more major in him. I think his accuracy and approach game will keep him in the mix and if he can throw a couple birdies in there who knows?

Man, how could I forget Furyk. He's already got one US and he should have won last year. Forget what I just said about length, Furyk will represent. Manheim PA in the house BOOOOYYYYYEEEEE!

This course fits Jim's game extremely well! Jim always seems to be in the US open on Sunday afternoon, when it counts, down the stretch.

He's not to be taken lightly, very straight off the box, and putts very well on slick greens. He has all the tools to be in the mix Sunday afternoon.

I played in a District Golf Tourney in High School against Jim Furyk. He dusted the field in 1987 by at least 15 shots.

Oh, yeah...early on, Mr. Toms is tied for the lead at -2!

Ok, I guess if I'm going to start a thread to pick a winner just going with a no name does not cut it. So I'll pick Mike Wier, I would have said Tom's but that would not be to fair sense he is 2 under. Garcia is 7 over after 11 holes. Here's a link to real time scoring.http://www.usopen.com/scoring/dyn/alllb.html

That's pretty cool, getting to play with Jim. I have a feeling the closer we get to 72 those - are gonna turn to +.

This course will tame the field. As Joe would say...the winner is gonna have to fight his guts out!

Tom's went from -3 to +2 in his last six holes of his round.

I see they had 7 amatuer's qualify this year. For those that don't know anyone which meets some requirements (I think its a regestered handicap below a given number) can try and qualify for the US Open. Not sure if any AM has ever won the Open but its pretty cool that they have the chance.

Yep, SOB! Oh well, still alot of golf to be played. He will be near the top by the weekend. This course is going to start kicking their ass.

It already is. And the first day is the easiest layout of the course. Oakmont is going to be probually the toughest challenge these guys face this year, most defenitely on the weekend.

It looks like that was pretty close to on point. Jim is still in good shape at +6, other than Casey having a hell of a round one of the best ever at Oakmont, right there with Johnny Millers 73 performance. The weekend rounds are going to be totally BRUTAL!

I know I'm late, but I'll take Scott Verplank.

Well neither Scott nor Stenson was able to make the cut, so I need Tiger to win to mitigate the degree to which I look like an imbecile.

Re: US Open Picks

Tiger and Bads in the last pairing, Furyk isn't out though, 4 back is still in range.......BUT TIGER....!

However, Tiger in the last pairing, he's lickin his chops......gonna be tough to beat. I can't recall him losing in the last pairing of a major?

I thought old BUBBA might finish round 3 with the lead , that triple killed him, he's not done though. Gonna be a HECK of a finish!

He was in the last group at the Masters this year which was won by Z. Johnson a couple of groups ahead. I also think he was beaten by Hal Sutton at The Players one year although that is not a major. It is the closest thing to it, though. Those are the only two instances that come to mind.

Tiger was a couple of birdies away from owning this day and probably the tournament

You are correct, he missed a few putts that usually fall. I have a feeling he just might make up for those tomorrow.

But all other parts of his game where on point! Including his putting, just missed a few that could have really seperated him from the field.

You are right, I forgot about Zach Johnson, he became the first Masters winner since Nick Faldo in 1990 not to come from the final pairing. That's pretty special. I remember Hals deal that went into a Monday, but that wasn't a major.....but they act like it is....? Maybe one day that will be the 5th?

I think it already gets more hype than the PGA, which is to me the weakest major. They have to wait for Woods to break Jack's record and maybe then they can re-categorize.

Re: US Open Picks

Tiger is 0-28 in MAJORS when not tied or in the lead after 54 holes. I think he breaks that streak today if he hits the ball anywhere near the way he did yesterday.

SmootSmack 06-17-2007 07:13 PM

Re: US Open Picks

Looking like it might be 0-29. Just missed a key birdie.

Re: US Open Picks

Tiger & Furyk were right there just couldn't knot it up, for extra holes. Did want to see one of the USA boys get it done.

Something king of strange about seeing someone competing in a major sports competition, holding the lead, and suddenly pulling out a pack of Marlboros to have a smoke.

In the old days they all smoked. Nicklaus stopped smoking in front of the cameras in the early 60s. Palmer, Hogan, Jones - all avid smokers. I was actually glad to see Cabrera win because he was so visibly nervous after about 15. If you've played any competetive golf you know that feeling and it's hard not to sympathise. Tiger seemed almost ill early on. He was sweating like a chief.

I remember seeing highlights of NFL coaches smoking on the sidelines, even players smoked at half-time apparently. Plus you'd have guys like Cronkite, and Carson smoking during their telecasts. And of course, there's this

Still, it's weird to see in this day and age.

Yeah I think that is why he was smoking soo much. He was very nervous, but kept his game up. It was funny the first time the tv cameras caught him smoking.
