Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
ESPN.com: Cuban hopes to create league to rival NFL
Is he serious? |
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
Will he call it the YFL?
|
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
Does he seriously think this is gonna work, along with an AFL that is being fostered strongly by ESPN?

why would he? |
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
I was thinking that there might be a good chance that DC might get a team. We dont have a arena team, and I would think that the 8 new teams would target places that have huge football followings.
I think it sounds sweet if it ever works out. Plus with only 8 teams that target 2nd round picks and up there would be decent players making up teams, and players that get suspended like R. Williams might rather play for a American leauge instead of Canadian leauge durning their suspensions. Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
I can't see how it would work. There are already about 30 AFL and afl2 teams across the country using the players that Cuban thinks will make up the UFL, so I don't see how they could consistently find enough decent players to keep the league going and, more importantly, growing.
I do agree that there is a demand for football year round and that the NFL may be suffering a bit from a complete lack of competition but I don't think starting a league from scratch is the way to change that. |
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
Hey if there is a N.Virginia team, I am all in. We got space out here close to Loudon County, build the damn stadium here, I dont care about traffic.

Only way to get the league running, is to have high profile stars, not post-second rounders. |
why would he?
I figured it was the natural progression after the demise of the XFL. When this fails another billionaire will come in and start the ZFL, and so on (using the Greek alphabet).
Actually, I was just kidding. |

Right, otherwise you just have a bunch of NFL cast-offs trying to get a second chance at getting into the league. You need a Joe Namath-type who basically says "screw the NFL, I'm going with these new guys;" but I don't see that happening. |
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
Nobody can compete directly with the NFL.
Nobody. |
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
This looks like another failure in the making

I didn't know NECKCAR was in the football business. |

They both compete for sport's fans dollars, to say NASCAR is not a competitor of the NFL would be a understatement. |

I said nobody can compete directly with the NFL, meaning another football league.

I wasn't offended, just clarifying what I meant.

Good luck, he'll need it.

Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
I wish I could afford to make grandiose failures like this. AFL works because it's unique. It's football, but not exactly the football we know

Nascar could not compete either...put Nascar on at the same time as the NFL and then look at the ratings. The NFL is the TV monster in America...Nascar does decent ratings when put up against nothing. The f-in World Series can not even do a better rating then a regular season NFL game. |

They don't compete to the same crowd. The NFL has a much more diverse fan base and a much more sports oriented fan base. NASCAR's fan base tends to be pretty focused in on NASCAR alone. Not a huge amount of sports fans in general. That is a generalization but it is pretty true. NASCAR isn't taking away much from any sport. They have built a totally separate base. |

Very true. |
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
and again, matty sums it up best. NOBODY
|
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
You can't beat the NFL so I don't think Cuban is stupid enough to actually take on the NFL. No one can compete with the NFL domestically....No one! muh$h$h$a!
|
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
Cuban begs the question, how could someone so stupid get so much money? I swear the 1990s make the gilded age seem positively egalitarian by comparison.

Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
why do you think cuban is stupid?

lol...Did you enjoyed seeing him anguish while the Mavs got their asses handed to them by the Worriers? |
Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
You are talking about the same guy who claimed to want to leave professional sports and sell his NBA franchise after they gave up a 2-0 series lead in the finals. He also puts together tape of how refs screwed his team over with calls and sends it to the league office. The guy is a big crybaby. I wonder how he is going to deal with it when this league tanks. It may turn him into a sociopath!

Re: Mark Cuban considers starting a rival NFL
The USFL did have high profile stars such as Hershel Walker and Jim Kelly, etc and it still folded after a short time. Cuban is delusional if he thinks he can compete with the NFL, with a very long and established history behind it. How is he going to get players? The best "scrubs" get relegated to the practice squads or NFL Europe. THe other leftovers go to AFL, where they stay. The USFL and the one week wonder the XFL should be proof enough that it is a dumb idea. To even have a shot, I would think that any new league would have to have teams in medium sized cities where you find the AFL teams and/ or just have games on Friday nights as to not have direct competition with the NFL. Thing is you will need to have a draw and having 2-3rd rate players isn't going to do that, so Cuban should scrap his dream. A more realistic goal for Cuban would be to get an expansion MSL team going in TX or somewhere in the Amer SW.
