Why are the Skins TE shopping??

Between Cooley and Yoder (and the use of Sellers), do we really need another TE?? I think if we bring in someone else that it will only ruffle more ego feathers!

Yoder hasn't signed yet & who knows if they would keep him if they got someone else in f. agency.
definitely need a pass catching backup in Saunders offense. Not saying we need to break the bank on one though.

And technically Sellers is fullback. But I get what you're saying.

Cooley will still be the primary pass catching TE. Gibbs is looking for someone to fill the role of the recently cut Christian Faurier. Perhaps we could draft another Don Warren type with a 2nd day draft choice.

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

Last year, espicially in the early season, Cooley was being held in for pass pro. He did a solid job, but it forced our second best option out of the passing game and basically gave Brunell the choices of Moss or "somebody else". Basically we were minimizing our offensive potential.

In the middle of the season, we tried playing Fauria more in that role. Problem was that he couldn't block, and would often hold. Consequently, Brunell got injured.

So the moral of the story is that we DO need somebody to fill the role of a blocking TE for us. I would advocate either a move for a talented player like a Daniel Graham (which isn't going to happen) or a cheaper blocker such as a Reggie Kelly, a Jason Dunn, or a late round draft pick (Or both a vet AND a late round draft pick). But don't kid yourself, if you watched Fauria last year, you know that this is a hole on this team.

Yoder can have a roster spot, but he was the band aid for the Fauria issue, not the solution to the problem.

Graham on the other hand has ideal size and blocking skills.

Yeah to bad our stupid front office hasn't gave Cooley a contract extension yet.I tell you what they better get something done pretty soon.Cooley has never been paid big money and i am willing to bet he wants some.

Good post. We don't need another Cooley clone, we need a road-grader for power-running downs.

Football is a situational game. There are situations when having two pass catching TEs does you very little good. You need a TE on the roster that can line up and just mash an LB or even a DE in a run blocking situation.

Our goalline offense still isn't where I'd like it to be. If you're truly smashmouth, you line up when everyone and their grandmother knows you're going to run, and you run it anyway. And if you're truly smashmouth, you make the yardage. We need a bulldozer at TE.

Like running 70 chip when everyone knows its coming? I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I know he's older, but since we're shopping and names are being bandied abot, what about Jermaine Wiggins?

He's a very good blocker, huge size, and an excellent receiver in his own right.

And the price would be right, too. Since he got cut last week i haven't heard his name yet visiting anyone.

Yes, because we do not have a good blocking TE. Cooley is a great receiver but his in line drive blocking is not very good. I was on the sidelines for the Texans game and Cooley was man handled by a CB. He sometimes gets ok blocks downfield on DB's, but his ability to block LB's or DE's is not great.
What I most came away from that game besides 1st time watching a Redskins game from the sideline was how bad a blocker our TE's are. Sellers our FB is the only good blocker. I would not be disappointed if we found a receiving TE that is also good blocker and if he beats out Cooley so be it. Cooley is not yet the complete TE.

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

Depth.....we have none at TE. If Cooley went down we would be hurt bad. That being said I can see then looking aroud. People its not going to happen fast on the TE or Guard spots. We are going to look around as the free agent market slows down and the money drys up. Then we will pick up the players we need and this is were great FO win super Bowls!

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

Ask yourself ,,, what would our offence be like if Cooley got hurt ? Teams would double Moss , put eight in the box , and we would be as bad as we been the last three years . Maybe Im wrong , but I think only Cleveland , Oakland , AZ. and Detriot have scored found the endzone less that us . It would not hurt JC < very little game time > to have another weapon .

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

If one guy gets hurt they will be scrambling. It would help to have another blocking TE.

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

Both of you are right Grim and Budw38!!! We should have learned that when O linemen went down in the play-offs and season end in 05 and our weak ass CB depth last year! This O runs on TE and FB's alot like New England. With ou then you are in trouble.

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

I wouldn't exactly call Todd Yoder a quality backup. We need an upgrade there, especially with the amoun of 2 and 3 TE packages we run.

Well, lets think about Thrash. I know he's a receiver, but he would make a great TE.. and could pick up slack there.. NO need to keep looking.

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

Kyle Brady would have been an ideal pickup but I don't think we were looking to spend that kind of money on a blocking TE. I think we should draft a smallish OT in the late rounds and teach him to catch.

If Cooley goes down, who would step in? Sellers could shift out to TE, but who would be the lead blocker? I don't trust Yoder to be the #1 TE or White to be the #1 FB.

Wiggins is nothing more than a Cooley clone. Wiggins is only 10lbs heavier than Cooley. I agree with Schneed10

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

They key word here is depth. If they were shopping for a starter then we could say what the F is going on. But otherwise is this really worth getting upset over?

Re: Why are the Skins TE shopping??

I didn't read the entire thread, so excuse me if this was said before...

Another option would be to look at FB. If we could get a good run blocking FB, either in FA or via the draft, then we could move Sellers to TE. It's just a thought considering the lack of quality blocking TEs.

Although, I do agree that we have more pressing needs.
