What would Betts get on the open market today?
I was thinking about this...although our deal with Betts kind of seemed like a steal at the time, how unbelievable does it seem now? He probably would have been one of the top three free agent running back prospects. It's possible he could have landed 12-15 million in guarantees or more.
What do you guys think Betts would be commanding right now if teams were bidding on him (and how mad must he be at his agent)? |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
I think he'd get at least a $10 million signing bonus.
|
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
Well the FO gets a lot of shit for the bad moves but just think what would have been said if Betts and Dockery walked after big contracts!!! Its funny how low on the radar the Betts deal was last fall!!!
|
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
That's why it amazed me that we were able to re-sign him. Just look at what Dockery got, there's your answer. Betts would have probably doubled his money at least and got a starting job.

Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
portis told betts that leaving isn't a good idea, since the grass isn't always greener... it was a great deal for the skins at the time, and now seeing ahman green... betts' agent dun f'd up.
|
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
Green got what, $23M for 4 years?
Betts could have easily gotten over $30M. Give some credit to this front office for locking up Betts with such a cheap deal. |

Did Kris Dielman make a bad deal leaving 10+million on the table in Seattle to stay in SD? Sometime it's better to stay home for less and know the team. It really up to the player!

Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
Is Betts looking for a building to jump off this morning, or putting a bullet in his agent? WTF is up with that?

yeah, but dielman would have NEVER gotten even 39$mill last year. I agree that a lot of times money isn't the most important factor, but in the NFL it's rare to take SOO much less money without even testing the market. I really think portis helped influence betts on this one from the interviews i heard... yay portis - our future GM (taylor, moss, helped on betts - anyone else he was bugging JG about?). |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
In other words, Betts is over at Portis' house kickin' his ass all over the yard?

I still can't believe the Cowboys paid Davis that much! |

just ask Smoot |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
Sheriff pointed out how out of whack contracts are now. Players on all teams are going to be angling for new contracts after this market.

That's why you sign before season's end. |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
you know this reminds me of the last couple of years in the NBA. A decent player who can contribute getting big contracts because there aren't that many decent players out there. Etan Thomas getting that big deal, chris Kamen (spelling?) got a big deal and he doesnt do a whole lot. These guys (guards, tackles) are starting to get some recognition for being pieces that are not interchangeable. They are starting to be "the needed" guys to make the team run like a smooth oiled machine. Hey, no matter how good your RB's and QB's are, if there aren't holes to run through, or your on your ass all the time, the team will not win games. and the guys in the trenches are finally getting some just due!

I get you, but how could his agent not see this coming? Hey Drew, Ladell here............. |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
At minimum, Betts could have gotten Lamont Jordan money on the open market, which I believe was around $30M, with close to $10M up front. I'd love to see our FO hold back enough cap to sign more core guys to extensions during the season. It was great that they got Sellers deal done before he could hit the market next offseason. The FO must do the same for Cooley, because he will command a nice sum next offseason.

Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
Im worried that this year's inflated market is goin to cost us Cooley next year. As loyal as the guy seems, he's gotta know that if he doesn't re-sign during the season, he will either be franchised or hit the open market, but either way he will make bank. Does anyone know how they will calculate cooley's franchise tag #? Do they average the salaries of the top paid TE's or FB's or the limited amount of H-backs in the league and who gets to decide what position he actually plays? I think the skins would get a deal with they counted him as a FB or H-back.

Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
I saw this in an NFL.com mock draft article and thought it was kind of interesting...
8. Houston: Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma -- There is still a chance the Texans trade for a running back -- maybe a Ladell Betts -- but if they don't, Peterson is the class of the running backs in the draft. If Houston trades for a runner or signs one in free agency, then Penn State tackle Levi Brown is a smart choice.
What would we ask for in return? *I don't know if this was written before or after the Texans got Green. |

franchise tagged TEs make 4.5mill this year. franchises FBs and H-backs count as RBs and would make 7mill this year. |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
For some players it's all about the money, and for others, that is not always the most important thing. Betts knew he could have gotten more on the open market, but he chose to stay. Smoot probably could have gotten more had he chose to wait, he chose to come here. Maybe that says something for the Redskin tradition.

Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
I'm not convinced that this is as much about Betts' loyalty as it is his agent screwing up (why would you not at least test the waters, even if you were going to resign with the Skins) but you have to commend our front office for getting this one done.
I wonder how Chief Chucking My Spear feels about this one? |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
Betts is definitely looking like the steal of this FA season, and Dockery the anti-steal.
Kudos to the front office. Even the Fletcher and Smoot deals look great in this market. |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
Well all I can say is thank god Betts is a "Core Redskin" and signed the deal with us, instead of hitting FA.
|
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
yeah you have to give him his props
|
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
This may sound crazy, BUT................. I wish we could trade him, get something good in return and resign TJ. Man I wish we could keep TJ. Doin a lot of wishin huh?

He's waiting for Brian Mitchell to comment. |
Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?
i think it was a great move one of the very few this team has done lately. Too bad they didnt think about getting dock sign before he hit FA. Maybe they could have paid dock if they didnt waste 10 on AA or 10 on carter or 10 on randle el or 10 on the great lloyd. Matty you just kill me lol.

ugh, they did. they tried for a year, but dock refused to comment on wanting to come back, cause he and his agent already knew they weren't going to sign anything that wasn't insane until seeing what the FA market brought. I wouldn't want him for 5mill+ a year anyways. If you really think they didn't try or just missed the 80 articles about it during the year, well, that's just silly. |
