Rumor: Strahan Wants To Be A Redskin

There's talk at the scouting combine in Indy that Giants defensive end Michael Strahan wants to become a member of the Washington Redskins.
On the surface, the chances of the Giants trading Strahan within the division seem to be remote at best. But, as the rumor goes, Strahan is prepared to be difficult in the locker room if the team won't let him leave.
The presumed motivation? Money. Strahan had a lot of it. Last month, he was ordered to give a lot of it to his ex-wife.
And the Redskins are always willing to overpay. Especially at a time when the free-agent market doesn't contain many high-end performers at the position.
For the Giants, moving Strahan could be a short-term curse but a long-term blessing. The team has been dysfunctional for several years, and the continued presence of guys like Strahan has not helped the situation. At all.
With TiVi Barber and LaVar Arrington and Luke Pet-a-goat already gone, it makes sense (in our view) to continue to clear out the chronic malcontents. Like Strahan. And Plaxico Burress. And Jeremy Shockey.
Strahan, 35, is under contract with the Giants for the next two seasons, at salaries of $4 million per year. He missed seven games due to injury in 2006.

Re: Strahan Wants To Be A Redskin

You also might want to post who that's from...

It's a total BS not-even-rumor made up from someone who said he wants to get paid and assume it's from the Redskins.

NO credibility to that at all.

See, this is why people always say "provide a link":

Also, make it clear that you are quoting a source next time.

Strahan may want to come, but we don't want him here.

TheMalcolmConnection 02-26-2007 11:24 AM

Re: Strahan Wants To Be A Redskin

You can say that about any player in the league. At PFW they probably have a template they give to their writers that looks something like this:

_____(player)______ is unhappy and wants a long term big money deal. Sources say ______(player)______ would love to play for the Redskins.

ArtMonkDrillz 02-26-2007 11:27 AM

Re: Strahan Wants To Be A Redskin

I think I'll be a little embarassed if we go out and sign Strahan to a big FA contract or trade any/a bunch of picks to get him. If this report is true it's like he's just saying, "my career is almost over and I have to pay my ex, so I might as well go get some free money from the Redskins." I really hope we're past that point.

Hes not going anywhere because no other team is going to pay him 8 mil. over the next to years.

Doesn't make it accurate, but it goes far beyond what PFT says.

I'm guessing that their report of "Strahan wants to be a Redskin" is accurate, but I'm also guessing that the Redskins don't want Strahan. Thus, no deal will be made.

dumb rumor

The Redskins aren't in a position to make a trade. This makes no sense.

Why do people still believe anything that rag (PFT) says?

Re: Strahan Wants To Be A Redskin

I wish I could find the link, but this rumor is actually a couple of months old. Someone, I think from the NY Post, said after the season was done something to the extent of "How will Strahan afford to pay his ex the $15 million she won in the divorce settlement? Well, I'm sure Dan Snyder wouldn't mind paying him"

yeah I thought it sounded familiar, at first I thought this was an old thread someone dug up.

A rumor not even worth discussing if you ask me.

Peter King mentions a rumor on PFT saying that Daniel Graham will be a Redskin.....
6. Free-agency is going to be insane. I think some team is going to pay Daniel Graham, a blocking tight end, $5 million a year. I think some team (rumored to be Washington, profootballtalk.com reported Sunday night) is going to pay London Fletcher-Baker $6 million a year. I think some team might pay Tampa Bay defensive end Dewayne White (60 career games, 14 sacks) $7 million a year.
Heres the link to the story...

King is saying that the Skins will pay Fletcher a lot, but he doesn't say that we're going to tryt to get Graham. It's two different sentences.

Re: Strahan Wants To Be A Redskin

$6M a year for Fletcher?

C'mon, he can't mean his base salary will be $6M right off the bat... we just don't structure deals like that. Maybe he means the entire deal with bonus will work out to $6M per?

You're right. My bad. I thought he meant that all 3 players were getting big paydays from the Skins.

Graham is an interesting name to note though... not sure we could afford that kind of price on a blocking TE though.

How much would it have cost us to resign Royal last season? I know that's water under the bridge at this point, but I still wish we would have kept him.

If we pay Fletcher " a lot" then I have about had it. If we are going to over pay for someone then make it Dock. But don't ask guys to re-structure contracts to overpay for a 32 year old linebacker who does not play for you team, and it not the future of your team. But let's wait and see what happens first.

Whoever started this rumor simply overhead Strahan saying something along these lines....

...and from there deduced that since the Redskins make people rich then Strahan must be thinking about being a Redskin.

Re: Strahan Wants To Be A Redskin

Strahan wants to come here cause his wife took his ass to the cleaners and he needs money. She took most of the money he had saved. For the life of me I don't know why some of these guys get married. Why do it if you want to sleep around? You have too much $ at risk. She got something like 20 million and he had a total of 27 million. She really got his ass good. That's enough $ to OJ her ass! Just kidding. But with the way some women throw themselves at these guys it's stupid to get married cause you know what's going to eventually happen.

If I were one of these high profile guys I would do two things.

1. Never get married until I got "it" out of my system
2. ALWAYS WEAR A CONDOM.
3. I'm not one of them so who knows how I would act.

I'm guessing that if we warpathers had half of the options that these players do, 75% of us would have at least two kids by two different women. If you were out drinking and you had 6 of the most beautiful women trying to take you to bed, wouldn't you probably slip up here and there even if you knew they were just after your fame, money, or both?

I would be one slippping up SOB.

But Strahan is a freakin dumbass. He put a camera in the guest bedroom of his own house so he could peep at his wife's sister when she came to visit. That 's just plain stupid.

Re: Strahan Wants To Be A Redskin
Graham is an interesting name to note though... not sure we could afford that kind of price on a blocking TE though.
Well, if we brought him in, it would be a scheme change. He and Cooley would play TEs (Cooley's role would likely include a lot of his former H-back duties). we wouldn't use a fullback in our base package.

This move would make a lot more sense if Gibbs was calling the plays.

I don't think its going to happen, obviously. I haven't read anywhere that Washington is sniffing around him. Although we need a blocking TE, and Graham is the lone TE that could be worked into the starting offense, his prescence may be a little elaborate with Moss, Randle El, and Cooley already on board. We can't afford to outbid someone for him, and in light of this, its just not going to happen. As much as I would want it to---

what'd be real nice, is instead of paying for a new blocking TE, we got our current one to play worth a damn (or maybe signing the one we already had!). just like WRs... okay, patten at 13mill can't get it done, let's go out and buy 2 more at twice the price.

there are calculated risks, and then there's throwing money away.

Yeah, or even better, how about we find a blocking tight end through undrafted free agency? How hard could that be?

no strahan!! Not now! Not ever!

What is this madness even considering this. the Redskins have become the one-stop-shop franchise for the old, obsolete, and money-hungry-Im-bout-to-retire-so-lemme-get-a-big-contract-b4-I-flex athletes. Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, Mark Brunell, Regan Upshaw, Mike Barrow are just a few names of the OLD and washed up. Then we get the not-so-old and washed up players in Adam Archuleta, S. Springs, Renaldo Wynn, Phillip Daniels, Jeremiah Trotter, Brandon Llyod, and then we traded our first round and thrid round picks in 2003 for the rights to Lavernaeus Coles, only to trade him to New York for Santana Moss.

BBt just to show you how far the rabbit hole goes, guess who got drafted by the Redskins at 15th overall right b4 Santana(16th overall in 2001). Muth@fckin Rod Gardner!! So for three years the Skins waltz with stupidity, only to trade to get the player that we could have taken in the first fckin place!

Signing, or even thinking of adding, Strahan would be going back out on that dance floor to salsa with stupidity's cousin "mental we-tall-dation!."

Lets say it together class, "If I think we should sign Strahan, 'I AM WE TALL DID'." If u can undserstand that then u know the Skins need a brisk course of action in a brave and different direction if we ever plan to turn things around.

It took until the 31st post for someone to mention Bruce Smith. So - - - there is some precedent for the Skins signing an old defensive end who used to have great stats and who wanted a payday at the end of his career.

Is Michael Strahan the next Bruce Smith in DC?

I sure hope not.

I don't think things are as bad as you make them out to be. First of all, trading our 13th pick for Coles and, eventually, Moss was one of the smartest things we did in a long time. If you wouldn't do that trade again in a heartbeat, then I'm not quite sure what to say. And hindsight is nice and all, but most scouts had Gardner and Moss neck-and-neck. Drafting Gardner didn't work out, but name me a team that hasn't had at least one 1st round bust in the past 5 years?

As for brining in aging veteran stars, we haven't done much of that since 2000 (Brunell being the only notable exception). Barrow and Upshaw were signed to tinsy, weensy signing bonuses for guys who were expected to start. Every team signs older guys and we're no exception.
