News from the Combine
Draft Daddy: Blog : 2007 NFL Draft News as it Breaks: Updated Regularly
It says that we have been talking to OLB Lawrence Timmons, and CB Chris Houston. I find it extremely interesting that we would be talking to an OLB, and by the looks of these two players it looks like we are thinking about trading down. But I am sure we will be talking to a lot of players so I wouldn't put much stock into this. Found this to be interesting and thought I would pass this along. |
Re: News from the Combine
Good stuff. And this was interesting
"Word out of DC has the Redskins trading Ladell Betts and their 6th overall pick to the Jets for Jon Vilma and the Jets 25th overall selection." |
Re: News from the Combine
i'd love to get vilma, but i would hate to lose betts
|
Re: News from the Combine
Can't we find a LB as good as vilma with the 6th pick? why give away betts?
I would hate to lose our 6th pick. |

TO HELL WITH THAT! Betts had 1154 rushing yards last year and he only started 7 games I think. 7! Add 445 recieving yards and 5 overall TD's and I say thats pretty damn good. Why would we trade a back who has just proved himself as being able to carry a nice load of work AND a high pick for an above average LB and 25th pick? I like Vilma, he's cool and all but WTF! Trading down is not a good idea. On one hand, Vilma could really shore up the defense but then the quality of our pick decreases pretty greatly. Yeah, there might be people at that spot worth taking but, I think the draft could go any which crazy ways so.....ok...I'm too F-ed up right now from staying up all night partying, it's time to sleep. I'll finish this later. Hahah |
Re: News from the Combine
If you can get Vilma and say someone like Victor Abiamiri DE Notre Dame, one of a few guys who will be available at 25 you add two young athletic players to this defense. One player with the #6 pick added to this defense wont make it that much better. Add Vilma, one of the DL's who will be there with the 25th pick, SIgn a corner and this defense could be back to a respectable level in a hurry.
I like Betts but RB depth is useless if you cannot stop anybody and you can find RB depth pretty easilly. |
Good stuff. And this was interesting
"Word out of DC has the Redskins trading Ladell Betts and their 6th overall pick to the Jets for Jon Vilma and the Jets 25th overall selection."
They better get something else for that 6th pick. Betts for vilma, OK, but # 6 for just a #25, no second. that would be a questionable move on our part. we would still be stuck with 1 pick the first day, and a hole to fill at RB, since TJ is a free agent, and all we have is Rock. BAD MOVE |
Re: News from the Combine
I don't like the trade, but Vilma is better at LB than Betts is at RB. I don't think that difference is greater than the #6 versus #25 difference but it's not terribly far off. If we have to eat any of Betts contract and pay Vilma a ton then I'm totally against the idea, which so far is really all that it is...a rumor.

Re: News from the Combine
how much do you guys really think betts is going to carry the ball with portis healthy? remember how many carries larry johnson was getting when priest holmes was healthy? rock cartwright can pick up those 7-10 carries. we NEED vilma, a proven all pro middle linebacker
|
Re: News from the Combine
I'd do that trade in a second. Betts is a solid back, but not really a very good blocker and needs to correct his fumbling problems. We get a very good linebacker on a cheap contract and if we really dont give anything up it's a win for us. We still have a full stable of running backs that we can use. Portis is our bell cow.
|
Re: News from the Combine
While I'd hate to see Betts go, RBs are easily found in the draft, PRO BOWL LBs are not.
|
Re: News from the Combine
"Adalius Thomas is getting love from the New York Jets..."
Interesting, a replacement for Vilma? |
Re: News from the Combine
But how much do we need Vilma if Fletcher is coming to town? We wouldn't get BOTH would we?
The dropoff from #6 to #25 is tremendous. The quality between those to slots is nothing short of a plummet. I've said all along that our weaknesses on defense outweigh the advantages of running back depth. So we should definitely unload Betts if we can get fair compensation. But the Jets want that #6 pick more than they want Betts. The whole idea of trading Betts was to pick up MORE draft picks. Not lose value on the highest one we have. |
Re: News from the Combine
But how much do we need Vilma if Fletcher is coming to town? We wouldn't get BOTH would we?
No. If this trade for Vilma is happening, it will be finalized in the next week. Otherwise we would sign Fletcher. I don't like moving out of a position to get Branch, but considering we may pass on him anyway, getting Vilma at least gives me something to like. |
Re: News from the Combine
We have too many holes on the defensive line to spend that 6th pick on a linebacker, no matter how good that linebacker is.
Plus if we traded Betts, we'd have no depth at RB. It's be Portis and my two grandmothers at the RB position. That Vilma trade would be a horrendous idea. |

Unless they're being REALLY tight lipped about it, which is to be expected, I haven't heard, seen or read anything about the Redskins mention the slightest word about Alan Branch. All the talk has been about the two D-ends. |

Plus, if we did trade away Betts, they could make the move to keep TJ Duckett. You can find solid, reserve running backs just about anywhere. Hell, Kenny Watson was a decent pickup from undrafted free agency. |
Re: News from the Combine
I'll do Betts for Vilma all day. He's just plain old good.
|

Perhaps. But I think the bigger issue is #6 for #25. I'd like an extra pick thrown in there |

If there is any truth to this rumor, that's the part the Skins are working on. |

I still keep hearing for the last several weeks that Michael Turner is the guy the Jets really want. So we'll see |
Re: News from the Combine
I think we should tade betts only if they throw in a second round or third round pick.I like betts too but we need a DE,DT,MLB,SS, (im not sold on AA rebounding)and we need a corner.WTF!!and he shouldn't be traded?! We have ONE quality draft pick and five holes on D. With the 25th pick Georgia DE Charles Johnson could be around, Quentin Moses too. If we get a second round pick we could get ARK CB Chris Houston or Utah S Eric Weedle or maybe S Brandon Merriweather from where Da U!
|
Re: News from the Combine
One thing to keep in mind is that we could use either a DT or a DE from the draft. So, take the Defensive Linemen rankings and see what the drop-off in talent is from #6 to #25. If it's acceptably marginal then we save money signing a #25 rather than a #6. Any extra savings will be nice to have for additional signings (CB,DL/DE,backup RB?).
I don't want to see Ladell go but if given the chance to be a starter I'm sure that's what his heart desires. |
Re: News from the Combine
why that rumor is not true:
1. Why are in the market for London Fletcher if this is the case? 2. Are you telling me we would trade a top 15 runningback and top 6 pick for a non-top 15 Linebacker and a later pick? 3. Tackles Fletcher #3 leading tackler, Vilma #19 that trade has no benefit for us |

would you give up that much for one player? Not me, picking up Fletcher, drafting branch and getting clements could be huge. |

except they are. washington was a 2nd round pick. demeco ryans was a late first rounder. look at the tags this year, most are on d linemen, not linebackers. both are easy to get. HoF DEs/QBs are the hardest thing to get, followed by shutdown corners, franchise LTs, and game changing WRs (TO/randy moss in their prime, calvin johnson's potential, etc). |
Re: News from the Combine
I think head to head, pound for pound, Vilma is the better player. Plus he's a lot younger.
you're right on that, but again, its branch + fletcher + betts, or vilma + someone that's not that good (or not going to contribute big in his first year). |
Re: News from the Combine
The Vilma trade is a horrible idea for what we need. We need multiple day 1 picks to address some of our holes on defense. Keeping betts/#6 pick and signing fletcher or clements or both (who will make immediate impacts) is the better move for this team. We can then trade the #6 pick for a late 1st rounder and a 2nd/3rd rounder, which u then use to pick up D-line and secondary help. WE HAVE TALENT ON DEFENSE! We just need to build around it and fill some holes like every other playoff team in the NFL does thru the draft.
Maximizing the number of picks in draft can get us back to the playoffs next year. |

This team needs HELP in the first line of defense more than any other position. We have virtually nothing up front, and I think we should saty at #6 and draft the best DT- DE available. |
Re: News from the Combine
this trade is the dumbest shit i have heard of. how we give up Betts who is a better player at his position for Vilma is. and swap first round picks if we did this trade i would so pissed out the front office. this trade is know where an even trade. maybe if we trade betts for vilma swaped first rounders and also got 2nd round pick and a 4th.

If we don't do something to upgrade our front four, we could have Dick Butkus at MLB and it wouldn't matter. I can't begin to count the times I watched our defense shredded in the passing game, more from the lack of a pass rush than anything else. We need some muscle up front to occupy blockers in order to make any LB effective. |
Re: News from the Combine
we need a poll of weather getting vilma is good or bad.
it would be interesting. |
Re: News from the Combine
its not just getting him...because that would be good, its whether or not giving up an arm and a leg is worth it...and its not
|
Re: News from the Combine
matty make a poll
|
Re: News from the Combine
Don't do it.
Portis cannot take the entire load of the season without Betts. That's huge. We can't afford that. |
