Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons??? Quite simply..which one will we have when training camp starts in Late July??? WE WILL HAVE ONE, so decide.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
I'm pretty sure it will be Clements.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
Clements...he will immediately improve the secondary
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
Assuming we have one it will almost certainly be Clements. We have to assume we are going to maintain playing the Williams version of cover two where the CBs have to be able to man up AND play the run. While I think Samuels is a fine cover guy he isn't nearly the physical type that our style D requires. Clements was made for our D supposedly.
Of course if Williams makes any mods to the D(based on the whole 'they've figured it out' thought) then who knows. I don't see us abandoning the entire philosophy though. Clements by a mile. |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
Definitely Clements. But the thing that I don't like about Clements is that he isn't good at getting turnovers. He had like 3 interceptions this past season.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
I also think we will have Clements, but I rather have Samuels he had 9 or 10 int during the regular season and 2 int for T.D. in the playoffs
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
either one would be just fine with me , seriously.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
Turnovers are also a big part of what kind of system you run. When you leave your corners on islands (like we do) it's much harder for them to get pics. If they go for it, opens up the big play.

If Clements can shutdown his reciever then other CBs and Safeties will get more picks by default. |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
I have to say Asante Samuels because he is unbelievable. He reacts well when the ball is in the air, he is young and faster then Cleamnts and hegets plenty of turnovers.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
I would take either one of these guys. Unfortunately I think we will overpay for one and keep spiraling down the road of not building through the draft with young talent.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
Asante he has a knack for the ball, I believe he is younger and the Patriots have a history of not overspending. Plus he gives us an element we didn't have last year.... turnovers.

I agree. If we are giong to continue to play that style of defense, I say we just bring Smoot back for cheap. Theres no point in singing a bigtime corner if we are going to play way off the ball like we did this year, and not take some chances. I'm more concerned with the free saftey position than I am with the cornerback position to be quite truthful. |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
If either one of them can catch better than Carlos Rogers I'll take them.. I think it will be Clements and Redskin One will be landing in Buffalo at 12:01am..
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
We should get whoever is cheaper -- or whoever is closer to their market value. That would probably be Clements, considering the year that Samuels had.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
I'm with Gmanc and say we just go with Smoot. He'll come fairly cheap, he knows the system, that'll allow us to save money for the future (gasp!) or get some depth along the line.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clemons???
I really wouldn't be surprised if we don't get either. I think Gibbs wants to assert more authority on personel w/regards to $ & cap space. I think he wants to keep his vets & doesn't want to have to cut some guys this year or next due to more big signings.
I see us picking up a cheaper vet or 2 later in free agency. Somebody mentioned Smoot. While he might not be available, someone of his caliber might be for a signing bonus of 4 mil or less if we wait for them to be cut. |

What makes you sure we are going to get one of them? I hope we do, particularly Samuel. But I'm sure both teams will do everything to keep them. However Buff and NE will not overpay and we will which makes me nervous. |

TMC - is Smoot available? I thought he signed a long term contract - are the Vikings going to cut him? |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
how nuts would it be if we got Smoot AND Clark back...talk about a red faced coaching staff, "Sorry we thought you were replacable"
In all honesty though...I wouldn't mind if that did happen |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
Nate Clements. He knows the system and is more physical than Samuel.

That's all we need to say right there. Fire up Redskins One. |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
Clements is better than Smoot.
Samuel may be the best of them, but it seems like Clements wants to be here, IMO. |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
clements is by far the most likely (knows system, better player, not really tied to buffalo). either one would be fine with me and a good move though. if smoot's cheap, bring him back as our #3 ;), but that's probably not happening.

he's owed something like 6mill, and he ended the year as the #4 CB i believe... so... |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
The Vikes are probably gonna release Smoot. He was quoted in an article a couple weeks ago about how they might as well release him if they plan on making him the #3 corner, because he doesn't want to be the #3 corner until the end of his career.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
like i said,go after both of them!
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
Mark Maske said today online that he thought the Skins wouldn't have a big FA year, but would go after a cb in free agency. Before he's said that he thought it would be Clements.

That's 2 more than Roger's had.... anything is better than CR!!!!!!!!! |

Exactly. Look, we have two corners who can start the year and be very efficent. Shawn Springs is just as good when healthy as any of these guys. What we need is depth. I dont think we need a new starter. If we grabbed someone like Smoot, he could step in, in a 3 way type of rotation and we could actually try to DEVELOP someone. We all know what is wrong with the Redskins and focus on free agency, I just dont see why we would go that way again. It clearly dosent work. |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
If either one wants a $20 million signing bonus (allegedly Clements is seeking as much), I'd prefer to skip both. Neither one deserves to get a bigger bonus than Champ Bailey.
|
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
If we could bring both in (Clements and Smoot), then moving Springs to Safety would make perfect sense. But I really doubt that will happen.

How about neither becasue both are going to command very large signing bonues. How about we trade down and perhaps get a DE and a corner. Let's face it fellow Redskins fans. The defense is not going to be fixed in one year. NO MORE HIGH PRICED FREE AGENTS. |

i completly agree |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
In Today's NFL, its not that big of a deal to go from worst to first...and I'm starting to think bringing back Ol' Smooty would bring back some of the swagger. That's assuming we keep Springs at CB. If that's the case though, we're still going to need a Safety that can cover

there's a difference between high priced and overpaid. just cause dan spends a lot of money on players doesn't make them good. no one's b***hing about marcus washington, and he's making a ton. |

Carlos Rogers is best suited to play on the opposition's no. 2 Wideout. He (Rogers) is too good against the run to not have on the field. If we get a guy like Clements, Springs can play the nickle. This will: 1) decrease the probability of an injury to Springs. 2) give us the best possible depth at the CB position. |
Re: Asante Samuel or Nate Clements???
The bidding war for these two guys is going to prevent us from getting them. If we want to be fiscaly responsible and address all of our other needs we probably need to look else where.

I agree. If signing one of these guys prevents us from getting an MLB or DE (and we need both) then we are just pissing in the wind. I would rather go after Smoot who will be much cheaper. When Springs gets hurt a combination of Smoot, Rogers and Wright would be good enough until SS came back (as long as they are getting a consistent pass rush). Essentially that would be 3 #2 corners. |
