Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
Does anyone still think Jon Hall can kick anything past 35 yards? I don't. I know that he was a great kicker, but I think we are waisting time and games on him. So he can kick with his shirt off and act like he is the man, who cares. I feel scared half to death when he steps out to kick. I really have to hold my breathe and hope to God he makes it. I think we need to bring Tyler Jones out and give him another shot, trust me, the guy is for real. At Boise St. the dude was awesome. He would hit the back of the endzone 90% of the time. I am from Idaho and remember him kicking our ass in football, GIVE HIM A ANOTHER SHOT!!!

I think I can take one more miss before I ask for Halls head on a platter. Of course, if we give him the boot tomorrow morning I would have no problem whatsoever.

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
We should have turned the page on Hall last season.

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
why isnt there any good college kickers? i see guys in college kicking the hell out of the ball and as soon as they get a tryout, they suck

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
I should write an article on the all hindsight team ;)
but seriously, everyone called this one a long time ago. |
Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
Yeah...one more big miss...and i think it would have to be novak time...

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
Is Nick Novak (or anyone else available right now) really any better than John Hall? Even if Hall continues to hit at a rate of only 70%, he's still better than Nick Novak or anybody else available in the free agent market. You don't just go cutting a guy just because he's been missing. You replace him if you can find somebody better. I don't know that we can.
We should have gone after Ryan Longwell in the offseason when we had the chance. He's appreciably better than Hall. But trying to replace him now would be pointless. We'd end up with an equally substandard kicker, if not worse. |

How many more times does he have to miss? We need to be looking at the kickers who are out there and have a competition. John Hall is injury prone and if he cant make the kicks he has to go. |

It's not that simple. The question isn't simply "how many more times does he have to miss." The question is will Nick Novak (or any other chump kicker who is available) miss less often than John Hall? The answer is no in my mind. Novak kicks the ball too low, has too many blocked. And blocks aren't just misses. Blocks have the potential for being run back for a TD. Think about it man. Why would a kicker be available during Week 2 of the season if he was any good? |

Unless he totally tanks and stinks it up over the next couple of games, now isn't the time to experimenting with a new kicker. |
Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
The chances of finding someone on the street who can do a better job than Hall right now is pretty slim.

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
Listen here is what i am suggesting...lets get novak and whoever else we can find and bring them to redskins park and lets have a kicking competition. John Hall has never been the most reliable kicker in the world(as far as staying healhty) and the fact that we didnt have a competition during training camp boggles my mind.

A kicking competition in practice means squadoosh. Would have been nice to just sign Vinatieri, Vanderjagt, or Longwell in the offseason. But we didn't. Signing Nick Novak does not solve any kicking problems we have. That's jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire because he's a bum. We made our bed now we've got to lie in it. We're stuck with Hall, we're not going to find anybody better. |

He has had health issues the past couple of years but besides that and last week when has he let us down. They say his injury is not an issue this year and the miss in last weeks game was not an issue of distance I think if he hit the ball straight it would have been good from 59 yards. So, can anyone name a game that Hall has missed a FG that cost us a game other than the Vikings game? Even if he made the FG there was no telling if we even would have won the game. I know its his job to make those but kickers are going to miss them and I think after all his injury issues everyone is piling up on him. So please someone name the others he missed to cost us a game?

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
If one more miss by Hall means one more game in the loss column, it'll be too late. Hall showed that his range is 27 yards - barely. On Monday Night, if it comes to 4th down between Dallas' 15 and 40, we have to go for it.

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
It probably IS unlikely that we can find an available kicker better than Hall, or they'd already have a job.
Here's a solution...go for it on 4th down when in FG range. If we only score a TD 1 out of 3 times we try it, there's 7 points instead of 9 IF HALL made all of the FGs...which is unlikely. We brought in a lot of offensive weapons, lets use them. I don't think Gibbs would go for that idea though! :D |

His kicking like crap and getting hurt is getting old. When his problems are history, so will the bashing. If it means putting him on a Greyhound to solve the problems, so be it. You can't blame us for complaining about his inability to do the job he's paid to do. |
Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
That's the thing about Hall is that he tends to get injured mid-season, and we have to scramble to find a replacement. We always end up getting a crappy replacement because, as Matty said, there ain't much available after August.

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
The skins missed the boat on replacing Hall. Anyone they get now will be just as bad. They should have gone after Longwell, Vineteiri or Vanderjadgt. There has never been an offseason with so many good kickers available. Instead the skins chose to spend money on 2 WR's when they only needed 1 and a safety that was not a huge need either. The Redskins and every other team have no respect for the kicker position until they start losing games becasue of it. Look who jumped at top kickers in the offseason...Dallas & Indy...both of whom lost big games on field goal kicking last year. The Redskins will realize it eventually but there will not be the same level of kicker available as was there for them this year.

Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
This is somthing we should have addressed in the offseason, especially with some of the kickers avalible. There is probaboly no better kicker out there right now than Hall, but I'd start getting Frost ready or somthing to make the long balls.
I loved Novack, but I don't trust him from 45 yards anymore than I do Hall. I would bring some competition in, but I feel like we missed an opprotunity to fix that position. |
Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
You guys remember when they slowly started phasing Moseley out and used Steve Cox for kick-offs and long field goals? I think the only thing keeping them from doing the same with Hall and Frost is who will hold for Frost? I think they should have worked on using another holder (Collins maybe?) during the preseason.

Frost can drop kick it to himself. Hey, its as sane a suggestion as bringing in Nick Novak. |
Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
Hall is 23 for 29 in the last 3 seasons. Career 74% success rate. He's not the greatest kicker out there, but better than a lot will give him credit for.
He missed a field goal, but was put in the situation where he was bound to fail. 48 yards (he was shown hitting from 52 before the game), left hash, 22 seconds left...a play that they probably should have gone for it. John Hall becomes the scapegoat for a game where we had the ball inside the 10 thrice, and thrice only game away with field goals. If the offense puts the ball in the end zone once of those 3 times, we are walking to a victory at that point... Novak's a good kid, but isn't any better than Hall distance or accuracy wise. As stated before, they should have gone after one of the FAs this year, but instead felt they could trust in John Hall. So until he gets hurt again, or he misses the next 3 in a row...he's gonna be the Skins kicker, and he will make kicks down the stretch when needed. |
Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
definitely not hall's fault. it's a kick you want the professional to make, but it's not a gimme (i think someone said something like this before). i agree that it will take another big miss to have me shouting.

I love rational thinking.
It's very underrated too. |
Re: Scoot over Jon Hall, bring in Tyler Jones.
You ignored my question. When was the last time that he has cost us a game other than the Viking's game?
Don't forget the fact that he's a starting kicker that is expected to play for his money...he missed weeks 2-8 last year. Last year we lost in week 5 to Denver by 2 points with a backup kicker we scraped up WHO MISSED A FIELD GOAL. Also last year in Week 12 we lost in overtime to San Diego. We would've won in regulation time if Hall had not missed a FG with 1:04 left in the game! In 2004, Hall missed weeks 6-11 AND 15-17. That's 8 games missed. He also had a horrible 72% FG success rate. In Week 16, with our starting kicker absent again, Jeff Chandler missed a FG and we lost by 3 to Dallas. True again, Hall didn't miss the kick himself, but he should've been on the field since he was getting paid. Kickers should not be hurt so much, it's a penalty if someone even runs into them by accident. In 2003, Hall actually played every game! However, he missed a quarter of his kicks, 75% on FGs. You think it's not bad? He was 18th in the league in FG%...in the bottom half of all kickers. Week 3, he missed TWO FGs and we lost by 3 to the Giants. Week 11, missed a FG, we lost to the Panthers by 3. Week 16, missed a FG, we lost to the Bears by 3. |
