Re: Bigger disappointment?
if they cant stop........ol ass Brad Johnson, when Vick get to town..........it's going to be pitful
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Defense looked like swish cheese. The offense has big play potential, but is going to have to improve in the Red Zone. Still - this defense, regardless of injuries, should be playing better as a unit.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
For once the offense looked better than the defense, what is Greg Williams doing? Is he mental? All their run plays were through the left behind Hutchinson. Is it that hard to figure out?
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
I thought Carlos Rogers in particular had a bad game defending the pass. His run defense was good, however.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Defense was horrid. NO pressure on Brad "my knees retired last year" Johnson combined with BS penalties. The "hitting with the crown of the helmet" call was a piece of work. Notice that it was the same head ref that was involved in the spitting incident last year? Taylor should've known he was going to be a target.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Clearly the defense was the bigger letdown to me tonight.
At this point in the season you have to expect the offense to be a little behind, especially with a new system in place. Granted the defense was missing Springs, but they gave up way too many 3rd down conversions. |

Can he turn around and play the ball for once? He had good position on the TD if he would have just turned around. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
The most frustrating thing for us is when we get our defense going strong, we have problems with the offense. Now it seems like we have possibly big time potiential with the offense, now the defense wants to let us down. I know this team is going to get hyped for the Dallas game, but I'm very concerned this defense isn't going to have the same success as they did last year and the year before that.

Re: Bigger disappointment?
the disappointment for me was that shawn springs wasnt in the game. without springs the defensive scheme was very limited. When you have two has beens or been NEVER beens (wright and rumph) and one potential corner against a very experienced qb you will get these results. We cant dwell on this loss. Its dallas week now. Learn from mistakes and regroup. Oh and by the way can someone say missed opportunities in the red zone. Some of the play calling when we were in the redzone was a little suspect. Hey and where was cooley?
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
defense for the fact that it was expected to help pick up the slack until the offense completely came together. the blitz packages only worked a couple times in the Skins favor, but most of the time left the defense wide open to be picked apart on third down conversions. Rogers needs to learn to actually turn around and play the ball. The offense was very hit or miss, but the encouraging part about the offense was that there were a few times when players like Moss, Portis, and ARE were just an ankle tackle away from busting long plays.
and I don't like to complain too much about the refs but when they made that bs PF foul call on Taylor, the same call should have been made on the viking player who gave a forearm to the back of Lloyd's helmet after the ball was gone on the final drive. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Defense for sure. No pash rush. Poor secondary play. Rogers has to make that leap this year. I am not upset at Rumph or Wright but Rogers has to start playing like a top 10 pick at this point in his career.

Re: Bigger disappointment?
We lost this game in the trenches. On both sides of the ball, really. But more so on defense. Griffin and Salave'a were dominated by Hutchinson and Birk. We didn't hear our DTs' names called all night long.
Not enough people gave enough credit to the Vikings going into this game. That line is fierce. Griffin and Salave'a couldn't hold up at the point of attack. In the beginning of the game the LBs were filling well enough to make up for it and keep Chester Taylor mostly in check. But as the game wore on, we got tired and got pounded as the Vikes marched down and made it 19-16. Coverage was a pretty big problem too. We got lucky that Troy Williamson didn't burn us for 150 receiving yards. He dropped a lot of balls where he was wide open. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
I just got back from the bar.... it was a good game... not lopsided or anything but the defense shouldn't have given up those two TDs...I'm pretty drunk so what do I know...lol
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
The defense was bad. Almost no pressure on Johnson. Mostly though our corners looked pretty bad. Had Williamson actually caught a few more it could have been worse. The vikes have a better team than i thought. It was a tough game but we good teams pull these out.
Offensively, we did ok. We left a lot of points out there by kicking fg's intead of td's. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
I know he's not a game changer, but our secondary suffered a bad loss when Prioleau went out without being touched during the opening kick-off. When stuff like that happens, you know its not going to be your day.
What was Cartwright doing returning kickoffs? Please put John Hall out of his misery and cut him - its become painful to watch. I'm actually excited about our offense though. Prediction. TO and co will eat us alive next week, and we'll be 0-2 before recovering to win some games. Beyond that, its too early to say, though I can see losses to the Colts, Jacksonville, and one apiece to the Cowboys, G-men and Eagles. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
I put that loss on the defense. The offense made it into the red zone 4 times and within scoring range another. You can't let a team off of their own goal line (bad penalty notwithstanding) ever. You can't let a team convert 53% on 3rd down. You can't let Brad Johnson, Troy Williamson, Chester Taylor and Travis Taylor make big plays on you, ever. Especially at home. I'd hate to be in practice Wednesday if I was on Williams D but he needs to do 40 up-downs himself for that vanilla defense he called..
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
easily the defense. they allowed our offense to have the ball so few times it was rediculous. every vikings drive milked the clock, this defense was supposed to be top 5, it looked nowhere near that against what wasnt supposed to be a great offense of the vikings. the offense didnt do too bad, they just didnt get many chances
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Gregg Williams just didn't seem as fierce with his game plan tonight. Maybe that had something to do with an inexperienced secondary (and boy, did they show it). I expected Brad Johnson to be attacked, harassed, and thrown around like a rag doll. Not even close.
And we STILL do not get pressure on the quarterback with the front four. So far, Andre Carter has not impressed. He and Daniels aren't going to scare anybody. Griffin, Saleve'a, and Golston are fine when the defense as a whole is hitting on all cylinders. But when you allow 8 yards on first down, you've got life easy on 2nd and 2. That's when the Vikings running game was effective. At some point, you have to expect more out of cornerback taken at #9 overall in the draft. Make no mistake, there are big question marks with Carlos Rogers. With or without Springs, I believe this secondary is in serious trouble. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
I think defense played better, but was the bigger dissapointement. I had questions about the offense to begin with, holy crap, i'm so upset right now just got back to my hotel from teh game.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
The truth is Hutchinson manhandled Griffin and Salave'a...I was horrified man, horrified how bad they performed.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Good god, how many 3rd and 9's did the Vikings convert on us!
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Good god, how many 3rd and 9's did the Vikings convert on us!
Yep, that number sticks out for me too. On the post game show on the way home, they said the Vikings were 9 for 17 on third down. 7 of the 9 were for 3rd and 7 or longer. No pass rush and a poor pass defense add up to lots of 3rd down conversions and a loss. Simple as that. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Someone please tell me where Cooley was! I broke out my brand new Cooley jeresy that I got for my birthday and by the end of the game the guys were yelling at me to take it off and go get my Moss back from home.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Defense easily. I knew I wouldn't be suprised if our offense didn't start flying out of the gate, but the Vikings O handled our defense pretty easily.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
I thought the offense did quite well for the most part. But you gotta score touchdowns, not field goals. Defense gave up way too many 3rd downs. And so much for Archuleta and Taylor making offenses fear going over the middle. I think overall defense was clearly the bigger let down.
But to me there was no let down bigger than special teams coverage. That was just abysmal. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
our entire D-Line was M.I.A. and our big offseason hope Andre Carter seems to have made everyone worse.
our secondary: * BIG TROUBLE * Springs won't be the same guy he was last year, even after he heals. Rogers is a great nickelback, only a decent no.2, and by no means a no.1. he's had enough starting experience to show his potential guys, and his upside is looking less and less. Archuleta is a wannabe Sean Taylor, with none of his physical qualities. He's not as fast, not as strong, and worse yet, with all his 'experience', he wasnt showing any kind of veteran instinct. Prioleau was playing good for us last year, better at coverage for those 3rd and longs, and looks like he's out this year. That leaves us Rumph and Wright. we're in real trouble back there. Williams' blitzes only work when you can have some confidence in one of those two units (ideally both). our linebackers can't be a defense unto themselves. our offense is new, it's obvious its just a matter of time (what happened to passing to SELLERS on the goaline, Cooley is the decoy!). but the defense isn't new, it's in the worst shape it's been in years. i'd be making some serious phone calls this week. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Jeez, the defense sucked! Could not cover anyone. All those 3rd down conversions allowed. Carlos Rogers, my goodness, he couldn't cover anyone and gave up to many big gains and the touchdown pass - looked like a fool on that play. Also, Andre Carter, did he play tonight? I don't think he touched Brad Johnson at all. I hope they turn things around real quick or there not going to win many games.

Re: Bigger disappointment?
I'm starting to miss ryan clark atleast he kept sean in check... the o looked good to me but where was cooley, duckett, lloyd? Too many weapons i guess. It will get better it is only the first game
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
D-line was huge dissapointment tonight. Carlos had a couple opportunities to step up and make a play, but he did not. Look back for the ball, and on the pass defended i thought he could have gotten both hands up and made the pick easily. Guess he has lost some confidence. Looks like our secondary is confused with some coverages. And another thought,(and just a thought) with Arch's preseason performance, i dont think GW has confidence in his coverage ability just yet. He is keeping Sean back and letting Arch run support. Hmmm. We need Sean up there, and Pearson's Injury may cost us a few more poor performances.
As far as offense goes, to be HONEST, i was quite pleased. Sure Brunell had a few throw aways, but come on people, close game = field position. I am SO relieved about our offense. I know we dont really have a few weeks, but if we can get to week 6 at 2-3 or 3-2 I believe the offense will start ROLLIN. HAIL SKINS, WEEK 1, NEW OFFENSIVE SYSTEM, sorry guys, I'm still liking this team!!!!! |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Like Wilbon said in today's paper, if you told me the skins only score 16 points I still say they win. The D just had no urgency. Minn wanted it more than the skins did.

Re: Bigger disappointment?
I would say defence . We are in our third year under Willams . I do however feel it is not his fault that they overpaid for Carter < no pass rush > and Adam , who has never been good in coverage . It is only week 1 , but they better spend next off season building the left side of our O Line < i think Samuals and Dockery are too soft > and get a kid like Abraham < Atl > who can hurt the opposing qb . Wish we had drafted Merriman last year , beast ! NOW IT IS TIME TO WAX THE COWGILRS !!!!!!!
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
I think the injury to Prileau on the opening kick had alot to do with the defensive calls. He is a vital part to the nickel packages and to have him go down that early may have changed that. I voted Dfense because they just could not get off the field on 3rd downs. It's week one...DO NOT PANIC.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
No question - defense. They looked lost at times, although, as I've said elsewhere, ST looked good.
|
Re: Bigger disappointment?
honestly i'm glad this game is over. the west coast offense, especially run by brad johnson, is a pain in the ass to play, especially with our pressure-style defense.
i look for us to beat the cowboys, who looked just as bad as we did. brad johnson is a damn good QB in my mind. he's like 8-2 over his last 10 games right? just be glad this game is over. i may be freaking out but the vikings could be in the running to win the nfc north. none of us should be worried now. i was impressed to see the offense move the ball when it needed to. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
BJ has always been very underrated. The guy just wins.
I came away very impressed by the Vikings. They are very physical at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, and they have a QB that isn't going to make mistakes and lose games for them. They should be right there with the Bears for the division title. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
Biggest disappointment is reading this about our placekicker at the game's most critical point:
"I didn't think I was going on yet," Hall said. "I didn't really know what was happening." Coaches motioned Hall onto the field and, as he jogged onto the grass, he tried to sort out the details of the game. He thought it was third down, not fourth. He felt unsure exactly how much time remained. He stepped behind holder Derrick Frost and cleared his mind. He felt he was ready. Then he booted the ball -- "It felt clean," he said -- and watched it sail left. |
Re: Bigger disappointment?
what is up with our defense? for the past 2+ seasons, has been top 10 quality. the only 2 changes have been ryan clark and lavar. did someone underestimate how much they meant to this team?
if they cant stop........ol ass Brad Johnson, when Vick get to town..........it's going to be pitful
1st off, Brad is a QB, if given time, will pick most teams apart. Which was the problem last night. I thought our defense was an attacking defense. we hardly brought any pressure. I know we had some back ups in the secondary, but wouldn't you rather have them covering for 2 seconds on a play than 5. Any WR will get open when he has that much time, and any NFL QB will find a WR if they are given that much time. 2ndly, Vick sucks as a passer. I would rather him sit in the pocket and throw the ball around than Brad Johnson. |
