Portis speaks!!!
washingtonpost.com - nation, world, technology and Washington area news and headlines Portis said today that he felt 75% and was looking at the long haul. Did not feel he would be 100% until a few tough practices.
Looks bad for monday night I think. |
Re: Portis speaks!!!
AH poop.
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
It's cool I really dont see us losing to minnesota..
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Go TJ Duckett Go
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Not worried. He may be the face and identity of the Offense but they will run circles around the Vikings even without him. I dont like how Brad Johnson is so thoughful of his passes, causing TO's will be hard to come by b/c he is so precise and all the passes are short gainers. Still Defense will get us by and set up the offense greatly.
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
oh noes! my FF team :P
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
if Gibbs will clear anybody to play w/out practicing, it would be Portis. I wouldn't be surprised if he plays on a last min. decision.
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
i doubt he will play, they are looking to save him for the cowboys game. betts and duckface can get us the win against the purple freaks
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
we can beat the vikings with or without portis. i would love to have him to run up the score to shut up the critics
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
As great as Portis is, it won't take a running back of his caliber to win this football game. Before the pre-season Betts was being called one of the best back-up RB's in the league. Pre-season games sort of altered that depiction but at least he has shown enough ability in the past to run with the ball (2004 Minnesota game at FedEx).
I predict a good solid three quarters out of him with a few backfield passes for nice yardage. Duckett will wear the Yikes! down in the fourth to seal the victory. Oh yeah, Brunell throws three bombs to Moss, Lloyd and Patten/Cooley. HTTR, mu'uh fu'uhs! <---that can be edited if anyone wants. :) |
Re: Portis speaks!!!
The more it looks bad the more convinced I am that he is playing.
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Having Kevin Williams and Pat Williams in the middle of a line doesn't bode well for any running back in the NFL. Especially not Ladell Betts. The Skins might have more trouble than everyone thinks if he has to start this game.
That said, I don't know if the Vikes can put ANY points on the board. They've looked really bad running the new offense in the preseason...kinda sounds like the Skins? Well, the Vikes don't have the weapons around their quarterback the way the Redskins do. The Skins also have the better D, but I just don't think this one is a hands down win. |
Re: Portis speaks!!!
hmm wasnt the last game that Portis missed was the last game of the season of the 2004 season against the viqueens and betts and co. did pretty well?
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Yea, I agree that we should save him for the Cowboys game, let him fully heal. On another note, I think y'all are really underestimating the Vikings. We may be surprised with the kind of game they give us.
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Let CP rest, I have total faith in Betts. True though that we shouldn't underestimate the Vikes.
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
We wont mis a beat with Betts and Duckett in there, let Clinton fully recover before we play him.
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
dan_snyder 69 this is for you
can someone say closet viking fan? underestimating the vikings? what do they have on offense? there isnt too much there. now i am not saying its going to be 52 - 0 but keep one thing in mind they have a first year head coach...i would have to give us an edge in coaching.... behind chester taylor at rb who do they have?....i would have to give us the edge at rb even WITHOUT PORTIS. and wide receiver well i shouldnt have to even make a comparison and on defense again no comparison is needed they are running a new scheme on d as far as our d let me just say a couple of things...remember what happened to brad johnson the last time he faced a greg williams defense. we might be without springs but to be honest i am not worried. the outcome of this game is a no brainer. Redskins will win in front of 90,000+. Enough said. boooooooooooo vikings..........hooooooooooooray redskins |

Not going to be a problem. Portis should sit out and heal.

Only the best offensive guard in all of football, Steve Hutchinson. Center Matt Birk went to the Pro Bowl at least 3 times between 2000 - 2004. And tackle Bryant McKinnie busted out last season and was just as worthy of a pro-bowl spot at tackle as Randy Thomas was at guard. That line is pretty scary. Our defensive line is pretty good, but we're going to have our hands full up front. At WR, Troy Williamson's speed scares me. He got deep several times in the preseason, so Kenny Wright and Carlos Rogers are going to need to be on their toes. Throw in Brad Johnson and you have a QB who knows how to manage a game and make just enough plays when it counts (sound familiar? he's a lot like Brunell). Can't underestimate these guys. They went 9-7 last year for a reason. |

I think if we can shut down their running game, they'll be fine. Without a legitimate receiving threat, Taylor can help with Williamson over the top. |
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Looks like Portis will not play Monday, according to the Post. I hope TJ can plow through the Vikings!
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
9-7 for a reason is sure. I realize they went off on somekind of winning streak last season at the end similar to what we did. But the divison they play in is weak. They have a brand new coaching staff and i tell you that just cant bode well for them anyway. I am not underestimating them by any means but that post that dansynder69 wrote has me convinced he will have either his culpepper or moss jersey on monday night. the two best players the vikings had in sometime and without them i dont see them really being a threat to us.

Without a legitimate receiving threat, Taylor can help with Williamson over the top.
So? The Lions and Packers play in the NFL don't they? Somehow when looking at the schedule, everyone seems to conveniently forget about how much parity there is in the NFL. I remember us losing to the Oakland Raiders last year. And getting destroyed by the New York Giants. Do you KNOW which Redskin team is going to show up on Monday night? I don't. I know that if the 'Skins play up to their capability, they'll beat the Vikings. But do we know for sure they'll be on top of their game? Not by a long shot. We can have all the cocky confidence in our coaching staff, and the bravado after making the playoffs, and all that crap. But bottom line is we have to show up. And everyone please spare me the "I trust the coaches" crap. I trust them too. But coaches coach, it's the players who play. And if they don't cover, and they don't tackle, and they don't block, then we don't win. I do favor the Skins in this game. But anyone who thinks the Vikings are a pushover is either friggin crazy, or doesn't understand today's NFL. Today's NFL is one where there isn't a whole lot separating the best teams from the worst teams. The line between winning and losing is very fine. If we're not on our game, the Vikings will beat us. They are good enough. Don't take them lightly. |
Re: Portis speaks!!!
The last time BJ faced this defense he was horrible. The Vikings offense really doesn't concern me that much to be honest. If we can put some points up I really don't think this game is going to be close. I'm thinking 27-13.

[/kidding] We need to get these games started, we're all getting antsy in our pantsies. I know there's partiy, I just like to point out how much the Packers and Lions sucked last year. :biggthump |

I see an "if" in there, Matty. I see "if we put some points up." Sure, if we put some points up, and if we tackle, and if we cover, and if we block, we'll win pretty easily. I don't see us executing quite that well yet in Saunders' first game. I see a close battle. |

No I understand. I just like to point out that "sucking" in the NFL these days isn't as bad as people think. Parity is the name of the game. |
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Sorry but I'm just not buying what we saw in the preseason from the Redskins. I think it will be a night and day difference come Monday night.

Opening day comes around and guys are flying around again, guys flocking to the ball, blitzes coming from every direction... sure there are some areas to be concerned about but I don't see any reason to fret over the defense. |
Re: Portis speaks!!!
It makes me nervous how everyone thinks the Vikings are a walkover and we don't need Portis. Given how the skins have looked in the preseason this game scares the sh*t out of me. The thought of heading to big D at 0-1 is not a good one.

Re: Portis speaks!!!
ARRRGGGHHHHH! I'm losing my mind waiting for monday night... until then I'll be wandering around aimlessly
|
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Guys, We don't play Sunday, we play Monday night. That's one extra day. I still think Portis will suit up and play. This is all a decoy to confuse the Vikings. Portis has been healing for a month. He is ready. If you are Portis and you are 75% and it is Monday night at home in a home opener, how do you not try to play? Heck rotate series with Betts. I think Portis can get 10-15 carries and Betts can get 10-15. Portis is probably more worried about his shoulder in pass protection for Brunell, than he is running with the ball. Trying to hit blitzing LBs will be tougher on him than running with the ball.

I'm willing to assume that the coaching staff isn't underestimating anyone. I think they'll have the players focused and give them a great game play, let's just hope they perform out there. One thing that makes me a little nervous is Brad Johnson's little dump off passes. He killed us a few years ago with those; F Todd Yoder. |

I don't see Portis playing. He seemed pretty genuine when he said he's not in football shape and needs more time. Makes a lot of sense too. With Betts and Duckett, there's no real need to rush him back. Let him get ready for Dallas. |

While I doubt it will happen if the skins go 0-2 history says they are in trouble, 0-3 and the season is pretty much over. CP needs to be ready to go but he'd better hurry up. |

Opening day comes around and guys are flying around again, guys flocking to the ball, blitzes coming from every direction... sure there are some areas to be concerned about but I don't see any reason to fret over the defense.
No actually the defense is the part I feel really good about. Aside from some concerns in the secondary (like how Kenny Wright might do when lined up across from speedster Troy Williamson) I'm pretty comfortable with the D. It will be pretty hard for Carter and Daniels to get pressure on Brad because the tackles are really good. And Griffin will have his hands full with Hutchinson/Birk. But I know GW will bring heat with blitzes and that will bother Brad Johnson. But it's the offense I'm troubled by. I do realize that Saunders hid his entire offense in the preseason. Hopefully they can come right out and flip on the switch. But what offensive coordinator have you EVER seen that came right in and lit things up without an adjustment period? I can't think of any circumstance in NFL history when that's happened. Our defense is going to stymie the Vikes pretty badly. But I'm not confident that our offense is going to be well-orchestrated enough to make this anything but a close, defensive slugfest. |
Re: Portis speaks!!!
Let's just hope that Mark Brunell can be half as effective as Pittsburgh's back-up QB was last night. I'm sure the Vikings' defense will be gunning for Brunell. Our O-line should be up to the task.
