The New Monday Night Football

We're through the first quarter of ESPN's first installment of Monday Night Football and here are some things that I have noticed so far (I started to mention the first one another thread but I think this warrants its own):

-The score box is located in the middle of the screen at the bottom, and that's just not normal. For years we've been trained to look for the score in the corners, and lately it's been at the top. What was ESPN thinking on this? Are they doing this just to mess with me? I'm too easily distracted by crap written in the middle of the screen. Someone needs to be fired.

-While I like his articles in the Post, I'm worried that Kornheiser is quickly wondering into Dennis Miller territory. He was making some questionable old school pop culture references and trying to force way too many jokes. He could end up being good because I think a lot of his commentary will be similar to PTI, and I like that show. But this is just one man's humble opinion.
(he just made a terrible ATM-related joke. Ouch)

-Are Mike Tirico and Theismann enemies? Doesn't the lead broadcaster usually sit in the middle? How did Kornheiser get the cherry spot? I need to know how they decided this.

-I miss the player introductions because I like to know where the #2 receivers went to middle school. I hope they bring these back for the regular season. Watching the linemen try to act like they're comfortable in front of the camera is always classic.

-The Vikings uniforms are fugly.

-It's good to see that ESPN doesn't shy away from the commericals. I was worried that they wouldn't cut to them every 5 minutes, but they were obviously on top of that. Good for them.

I blame TAFKAS for all the negatives and I thank God for all the positives. So what do you guys think so far?

I'm really not paying much attention, but I take full blame for all the negatives

Re: The New Monday Night Football

The Theismann/Kornheiser chemistry isn't there. Thiesmann has stonefaced every joke/comment Tony has thrown out there. Maybe they had a spat before the game? Joe seems intent on disagreeing with every comment TK makes. painful.

BTW, Tiriko is piss poor play by play guy...too much yapping. How 'bout a spot? How 'bout letting the "color" guys speak....

It's just a start, but I'm not impressed so far.

I don't like the fact that as the ref just jogged down field to call a plenty on a punt his man-boobs jiggled to & fro.

Re: The New Monday Night Football

I hate theisman. He's got such an ego. TK comes out with the "I'm a dumbass" attitude and tries to get his point across without starting any drama. He's not an idiot, and he can be funny at times.

I think we can all agree he's an upgrade from Miller.

The scoreboard is rather psychadellic. I'm not comfortable with it.

the real question is, can a sports broadcast go one game without saying Terrell Owens?

I think they just had to poke Tony with a stick to wake him up.

2nd quarter is flowing a little better. Tony K. is definitely more talkative now.

God I hope there isn't this much sideline "reporting" during the regular season. I think they are calling every 3rd play right now.

Holy Shit, Tony just got trivia schooled by Warren Sapp! That's awesome...I would pay to see that every week.

As far as the sideline whenches go, at least they got, arguably, the two best free agents out there. They could have tried to pry Lisa Guerrero and her huge rack away from The World Series of Pop Culture.

Tafoya's cool, Colbert is just annoying.

I would only be impressed if they could lure Melissa Stark out of her motherhood induced retirement. Her skin tight sweaters were....um...cool.

She could do sideline interviews all night long and I wouldn't complain. Maybe we could start a petition to bring her back. She's a baltimorian, but I can forgive that.

Dude looks like that flying tomato kid from the X-games/Olympics, Shaun White.

If I am a D.End I am grabbing that hair for a sack...that's why only defensive players get away with long hair like that. There's no rule against using it to tackle a guy.

As far as MNF goes, the broadcast team is shockingly bad.

Tirico: He is at least giving it a real effort. But nothing seems to click. At least seems to have more chemestry with TK than JT. It just feels like he is in over his head.
Theisman: Seems to get off on being a jerk. Doesn't seem to grasp that broadcasting is a team sport. No chemistry with MT or TK. The booth seems crowded with JTs ego in there. He should simply wear an NFLPA shirt in the booth in the spirit of full disclosure. He needs to quit making excuses for every player screw up. The more I think about it the more it seems like he should be the first to go in order to give the others a chance to build a team.
Korhnheiser: For those of you who were part of the sub 1 share which made up his radio audience, I know you won't like this and I'm sorry: TK makes me pine for the days of Dennis Miller on MNF. Not sure what demo the MNF execs were going for when they brought TK in. People w/ AARP cards? WHO CARES ABOUT A BED AND BREAKFAST?
Sidelines: Bring in Ramona Chorleau. She can give her soccer reports in Italian and interview drunk Joe Nameth from time to time and it will be a huge step in the right direction.

Re: The New Monday Night Football

I had no idea I'd cause such a revolution with Ramona.

As for TK, I think it's just so crazy to see him and Wilbon as major national sports media figures. I remember growing up and reading their local sports columns in the Washington Post and now look at them.

dmek25 08-15-2006 11:01 AM

Re: The New Monday Night Football

ah ramona. as far as tirico, was bad as a sportscenter anchor, even worse as a play by play. kornheiser is just dennis miller using comprehendable english. and theisman would be alright if there was someone to balance him out. tk was on the right track calling out jt for saying he would have passed on linert and cutler, leaving aaron brooks as your starter. but he didnt pursue it enough

Mc2guy 08-15-2006 11:17 AM

Re: The New Monday Night Football

As I said last night, JT and TK were not feeling it. JT seemed to just want to stoneface everything out of TK's mouth even though some of it was pretty funny (to me at least). I did like that TK started calling JT on some of the idiotic drivel he spews. He even told JT his hair looked fake, that was hilarious. JT was honestly hurt by it.

Tiriko is a joke. The only sport he is competent to handle is golf, and that where he should stay. He talked about 2x as much as he should have and made about half the spots/player id's that he should have. A play by play guy should call the damn play...down, distance, offensive formation, player with the ball, tackler, yardline, gain or loss, pause for color commentary, repeat. Maybe I should make up a cheat sheet and send it to him.

I didn't like it at all... Korn and Theiseman seemed like bitter enemies in the booth. and that ask tony thing HOW CORNY! I say drop both of those guys and put in Micheal Irving for comedy relief and WILBOURNE to be
the serious one it would be helarious

Re: The New Monday Night Football

This will take time and if this is the worst we get it should be pretty good.

Tirico was the worst of the 3. He continually interjected himself to call plays that did not need described with the result of cutting off JT and TK starting to banter. Tirico is the airtraffic controller and he needs to do a better job of handling the chatter.

JT was too stiff and seems like he has no sense of humor. He needs some witty comebacks instead of just yes or no.

TK was also stiff but he seemed nervous which is kind of undertandable since this was his first time in a live booth. TK took a less is more approach in his 1st outing because he is new to this stuff.

Overall I'd give the show a B.

724Skinsfan 08-15-2006 01:40 PM

Re: The New Monday Night Football

Overall, I'd give them a C- grade but they still have 3 weeks to practice. Kornheiser needs to speak up a little bit. Doesn't Tirico do play by play on Thursday night college football?

ArtMonkDrillz 08-15-2006 01:52 PM

Re: The New Monday Night Football

Guys, We can't start freaking out yet! This was just the first pre-season MNF game, so we need to keep cool! Tom Jackson is already saying that ESPN wasted their money on Kornheiser and that he's just like McGwire, but only time will tell.
SO WE CAN'T START FREAKING OUT!!!

Hey AMD, I brought up your scoreboard concern at a meeting just now. Said several of my friends didn't like it. Others at the meeting said the same thing. I think right now the plan is to keep it a bit longer and see if people get used to it. But the powers that be have been made aware
