Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
The Bengals have created a hotline so fans can call in and report bad behavior by other fans, including cursing too much.
Maybe it's just because I come from Philadelphia, but I think fanbases need to take a page out of the Eagles' book in order to develop a better homefield advantage. You can't go to a game and expect to create game-altering noise without feeling some passion. If that passion comes from a hatred of the other team and results in some cursing, it's all the better for your team. Nobody's saying fans need to get in fights, throw ice on the field, and intimidate other people. But you have to be ready to bring the noise to create a good homefield. I don't know about you, but the only way I can be that loud for three straight hours is if I've really got the blood flowing. Sometimes the Skins are winning and it's easy to get loud because you're excited. But when the Skins are losing, you have to summon some hatred for the other team in order to bring the noise. Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
I happen to think the Bengals will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this year...but this is such a wuss move. I recently tried to visit their fan site just to get a feel for how they did in the draft and so forth, they won't even allow non-Bengal fans in their locker room area to chat. And if for some reason you were able to post a comment, no matter how positive, the Mods will tell you once to leave before banning you from the site altoghether.
I don't know but something about that seems incredibly 'soft' to me. |

Yeah cause I'm going to read all of the way through a 100-post hijacked thread to talk about the Bengals. Get out of town, Gigity. Don't make me go on another anti-hijacking rant. |

I'm offended by the birthday boy! I've taken it upon myself to update everyone on Sin-cinatti's legal situation and he had to step on my toes, just like someone else did the other day when they reported on the guard that got his boat pulled over.

Actually I'm being entirely serious. They have one of the best homefield advantages in football. Their fans get into fights and behave like morons, and I'm not condoning that part of their behavior. But at the same time they're intensely passionate and that place gets downright friggin loud. That's the part I'd want to model, the passion. So if the guy next to me is all riled up, making noise and getting really into it, and he happens to blurt out a few curse words in the process; and then I go and call the Jerk hotline on him, that hurts the homefield advantage in my opinion. Now all of a sudden people have to watch their mouths instead of just letting fly with the noise and the passion. This is going to make people mad, but I've been saying it for a while, Redskin fans need to sack up if they're going to make Fed Ex feel like RFK again. You can't sit there and just "have a pleasant afternoon." You have to bring the nasty. Us Skins fans took a good step forward last year, Fed Ex was much noisier. But it has a ways to go to join the likes of the Linc and Arrowhead. |
Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
I get all sorts of into the game and I don't want anyone to tell me how passionate I can be about it. I think this is yet annother way that the MAN is injecting us with his utopian politiclly correct tranqualizers.

Because if we're all polite and courteous then the place will turn into LincField South like it has been in the years prior to 2005. I'm not saying be an asshole, but be loud and proud. Last year my Dad and I ran out the Cowboys fans in front of us JUST by being loud and obnoxious. I never said a word to them, I just clapped loudly as I'm allowed to do and eventually they left. If I went to an opposing team's stadium and everyone is all like, "Hey buddy, how's it goin'?" I'm going to be FAR more likely to invite more of my friends to the game and there goes your homefield advantage. |
Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
I think we'll see a 'new' 12th Man this year at FedX. The enthusiasm has been building since Gibbs arrived. But I agree, you can't be a nice guy...in fact, I'll go ahead and jump out there and say it, you really have to be an asshole man. I really do. Anything short of a fist fight is totally acceptable in my opinion.

Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
I have a TRULY obnoxious laugh I do whenever something bad happens to the other team.

Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
Okay, when we start saying that the only way to gain home-field advantage is to imitate the eagles, well I gotta say something.
I have been to every home game for the last three years. After each of those games my voice is gone. While I am not the model of decorum, I am acutely aware that people do bring their kids to these games. You can be loud and proud without being a boorish thug. Many times I have opposing fans near me. Most of the times loud, obnoxious taunting follows (pre-Gibbs I was mostly the recipient). Again, generally, it doesn't involve vulgarity. Home field advantage is about making noise. That noise need not be vulgar. And sorry, I will never attempt to physically intimidate opposing fans - It's unneccessary, it's illegal, it's bully behavior and it's something I don't want my son to ever emulate. |

Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
what? i cant bring my kids to an nfl game because some lame ass wants to act like an a**hole? being loud and cheering( or booing) is acceptable behavior. in all the years of traveling to the vet to see the skins my motto was, say anything you want to about me or anyone in my family, just keep the vulgarities to a minimum, and never make it physical. i dont want to be known as philly south. we know how to win with class, unlike those morons in green and white

Just to clarify, my comments about us being LincField South was because I don't want ANYONE being polite, just civil to other team's fans. I was referring to this because an insane number of opposing team's fans would show up because we WERE too polite or NOT loud enough. If you know you're going to catch a razzing going into another stadium, that's a good thing. If you know you're going to catch a BEATING, that's a totally different thing. |
Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
So, if I guy is front of you cheering and cursing....what, you'll tell him he's out of line?
|
Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
I think you have a right to tell him he's out of line. I do think there's a reasonable expectation to not be downright idiotic when you go to a football game. It's a really grey area between acceptable and obnoxious at a football game. I think as long as you aren't screaming obscenities then you're good. If a child happens to hear you say an obscenity when you're talking to someone near you at a normal volume, I think that's one of the risks of going to the game.

That's pretty much where I'm (excuse my grammar) at. If obscenities (slip) then so be it. If you're purposely being rude and vulgar then that's another thing. If a child is in ear shot of an off color comment, I really think that's one of the risks of being at a game. I make no apologies. |
Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
i agree but there is a very fine between being a good fan and a royal a** hole. screaming obscenities at the top of your lungs is not being a good fan, its being a great a**hole. some vulgarities will slip out during any conversation and thats to be expected. but being drunk out of your mind and using only bad language should not be tolerated
|

I'm drunk out of my mind, but I'm a friendly drunk! :)

Dmek, I think I've been guilty of being an asshole....mostly at bars though. |
Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
everyone is guilty of that at one time or another. it just burns me up that eagle fans think because they buy a ticket, anything goes. i dont want fed ex to be that kind of place. and yea for malcolm. i get overly friendly when im drunk also
|
Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
Some people get angry. I get happy. I DO get angry on tequila, but I don't drink any type of tequila at tailgates, so this year's tailgate is safe from angry Malcolm.
|
Re: Why The Bengals Won't Have a Good 12th Man
Same here, I get happy when I'm drunk...if I'm watching the Skins, I have the potential to be an asshole, but I've never been out of the way or anything. I hope to sling some brews with BrudLee this weekend.....Brud are you there???
