With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

Firstdown brought it up in another thread. But let's just suppose for a minute the Washington Redskins had the top pick in this year's draft. Putting aside any salary issues and considering the current make-up of our team who would you select as #1 overall?

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

AJ Hawk. I know it probably sends the wrong message to the homegrown players for the Skins, but he looks like one of those "can't miss" linebackers.

Vernon Davis would be a very close second.

passing up on reggie bush would be like passing up on michael jordan... even if we have a pro bowl runningback and good returners

Mario Williams. Williams on one side and Carter on the other? Vicious. Vernon Davis also a very close second for me.

You know, I kind of agree with that. Im now torn...glad Im not GM!

mario williams, he'll have a bigger impact than AJ or vernon davis would. (I mean what davis would provide above and beyondd what cooley can do... we're not handing out 107$mill to WRs to go 2 and 3 TEs every down).

Hawk is good, but LBs are like RBs in that 2nd rounder are still more than good enough (ie marcus washington at pick #59).

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

Well first off you realy cannot put aside the salary issue because that is a major factor when there is no immediate need. I'd say pass on Reggie for three reasons. 1 We have Portis who is agreat RB and a hugh salary. 2 We have EL who is a proven returner and several other things. 3 He would demand a large amount of money which we do not have for a player which is a luxury and not a need. Yes he is a great talent and will probably be a top player in the NFL but that is probably and there is no guarantee. So why not pick a great player of need when you have the chance to do so. If we were in this position that would mean we sucked and alot of other factors would be different.

If Bush put up those type of numbers on a less-talented team, I'd be sharing the same man-crush as the rest of us. That team just has a NUMBER of first rounders going in this year's draft.

I'd say Mario Williams as well

its not though. in the nba 5 are on the floor, not 22 + special teams. jordan could play the full 48, and bush isn't a 30 carry a game grinder either, especially not after running back kicks. That'd wind anyone.

barry sanders was better, but unlike jordan, he didn't lead his team to 6 titles... he helped (HELPED) them get into what? one playoff game?

I'd love to see some footage of Mario Williams. Everyone is talking about him as "can't miss" also. Just haven't seen anything about him, only heard how great he is.

Mario fought off the Goombas and the Koopa Troopa and saved the princess! What more do you want?!

Of course, there is his little "mushroom" addiction we might have to worry about.

NICE!

I never thought about that but Goomba?!

i would trade down and fill our needs at conerback and linebacker

TheMalcolmConnection 04-18-2006 10:06 AM

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

That's the sensible thing to do, but I think the question is if we HAD to take someone, who would we take?

dirthogs311 04-18-2006 10:15 AM

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

Maybe we would take Bush and then trade him for another player like a LB or CB, whoever would offer the best player either a draftee or veteran; plus a couple picks. But who would we want??

That Guy 04-18-2006 10:23 AM

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

here's a quick comparision of combine numbers (since i can't do video here):
Name Hgt Wgt Vert Reps 40 time shuttle 3cone broad jump
Mario Williams 6'7" 295 40.5" 35 4.70 4.37 7.21 10'0"
Kamerion Wimbley 6'4" 248 38.5" 24 4.61 4.48 6.98 10'9"
Tamba Hali 6'3" 275 30" 18 4.87 4.31 7.28 8'10"
Mathias Kiwanuka 6'6" 266 32" 17 4.70 4.15 7.29 10"0"
Ray Edwards 6'5" 273 39" 30 4.81 4.59 7.71 9'6"

Manny Lawson 6'6" 241 39.5" 23 4.43 4.21 6.90 10'4"
mario's 4.7 might not seem impressive, but he's doing that at 300lbs... the fastest OGs and DTs (near 300lbs) run 4.9-5.1. The best day 1 OT/OG/DT runs a 4.95 (eric winston, who also played TE in college). no one else breaks 5.00. There's another ex-TE/project C in chris chester that runs a 4.85 at 300lbs, but he might slip into day two. There just aren't many 300lbs DEs that are fast enough to pass rush, but he can.

The only guys that can outrun him weigh 50lbs less. He outjumps and outlifts anyone though, and is very competitive speed-wise even with the extra weight.

trade down for more picks in the first round

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

Mario Williams. I love Ferguson, but Samuels and Jansen still have enough years left that we don't need to go after him. I'm not sold on Hawk (think Andy Katzenmoyer) but that's probably just because I'm biased against OSU.

I'm not sold on Bush yet. I think he's a product of an amazing offense. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bush's career track Peter Warrick's. Tons of hype, he's the next great thing guaranteed, he was dominant in college, etc, etc, etc. In fact, I think Deangelo Williams will be a better NFL RB than Bush.

Oh, and if trading down were an option, I'd trade down and take Jay Cutler......but that's probably because I've always hated the Campbell pick.

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

Mario Williams or Vernon Davis. I would lean more toward Williams because having been near that media market for part of the season, I can tell you, the kid impressed the hell out of me. I could see the Texans picking him at #1, it wouldn't really surprise me all that much. I think he's THAT good.

On the other hand, we have already addressed the DE position this offseason. Adding Vernon Davis to our lineup would make this O even more dynamic. I think that he is a rare talent as well and he could be as much, if not more, of an impact player than Cooley. It would give Brunell another short range target while the WRs are stretching the field.

All that said, I'm really glad the Skins don't have the #1 overall pick. That would just be really stressful to try to decide who to take.

4/5 best DL guys are over 30, 4/5 of our best receivers are under 29.
4/5 best DL guys are over 30, 4/5 of our best receivers are under 29.
I think it's pretty obvious that our D is older than our O. However, I'd like to see what happens with Andre Carter. I think spending 70 million on 2 DE's who are still relatively unproven in the NFL could come back to bite us. That's the main reason I would lean toward Davis.

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

Hands down, Mario Williams, simply because it makes sense. We have not had a great DE in years and by the looks of it the Texans are primed to take him over Reggie Bush, at least that is the rumor?

Re: With the #1 Overall Pick, The Redskins Select...

vernon davis. Trading down a few spots then picking him would be the best. A TE like him would make our offense unstoppable.

trading down and taking williams.we would have a nice, solid d line rotation then

70$mill on DEs is somehow different from $107mill on unproven WRs?

moss worked out, how about patten, El, and lloyd (who i'm projecting to get another 30mill deal)? knocking mario as unproven and then calling davis unstoppable is kinda ironic ;)

How is Reggie Bush overrated? he had 1700 yards(3rd in the NCAA) while sharing it with Lendel with a 8.7 yard average and some of his best games are the ones against the teams where USC almost lost, i.e. 513 total purpose yards against Fresno State, 160 rushing yards 3 TDs against Notre Dame, and 158 rushing yards 2 TDs against Arizona State.

A quote in ESPN i found interesting, "He had 177 total yards against Texas in the Rose Bowl, on only 19 touches. After that game, everybody called him a disappointment."

With his abilities I would find it hard for him not to be an unbelievable player in the NFL.

I never called him unstoppable, for one. I said he impressed me and I think he's worthy of the top pick, if you're a team that needs a DE. Like, for example, the Texans. I think Washington addressed their DE issues already.

That said, he is unproven. He hasn't done anything in the NFL yet, he could get shut down for all anyone knows. I'd be willing to bet that he won't, but I've been wrong before.

However, it's my opinion that we should go after a TE because the O still needs to catch up to the D. Also, I don't ever remember talking about being comfortable with the money we spent on our WR's.

You don't pass up Bush period. He would look like Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl in Al Saunders' system. Have you seen that still shot where the Notre Dame linebacker is in mid air putting on the textbook tackle? Too bad Reggie is six feet in the air and jumping over him like Vince Carter did to that 7'0 French guy.
