Re: How Long Will Jay Gruden Last This Season as Head Coach?

A lot of Jay’s offensive yardage and TD’s have come in garbage time. Both opposing teams were far enough ahead to give Jay and Case a free scoring drive at the end. Yesterday the Cowboys gave up TWO garbage time drives and scores.

Gruden may love Case but Keenum has missed two wide open TD passes which might have reshaped the games.

Jay will go back next year as the good OC he was before he came here. Not a very good HC, who has been further handicapped with a poor GM and owner.
Ill bite since I am somewhat of a Gruden fan, I think he would be an above average OC but not cut out for a HC. I think he deserves better than the Skins. He was never allowed to pick his assistants and has had very little to no input .. but it was nice for Doug Williams to give him a cursory call, after the fact, to let him know they were trading and backing up the Brinks truck for Alex Smith.

Guice - I think Jay likes Guice over AP. The future is Guice (maybe). But I did expect a 50/50 split in week 1 and I guess I dont value ST as much as Jay but typically you do want your 3rd back to play ST. We have Guice, CT and AP ... I would have dressed AP but a dressed AP doesnt win us or change the result of the Eagles game ino.

"You pay a head coach to make good decisions in preparing for games, getting the players preparing, setting the team up for success and making good decisions on the fly during games." -- Does he get any credit for having the team UP 17-0 early in the 2nd quarter? 20-7 at the half? Getting Case Keenum in a system to rack up 380 yds passing?

I only judge Jay for what the offense does bc he is basically just an OC with no roster or assistants input. I dont even think he has ultimate input on the run game as Callahan seems to be the main voice there.

Jay is a good OC, a competent offensive mind on a team and FO with very few competent people on the payroll.
So in other words, he is Norv Turner. Great.

Gruden is not a good head coach....he's 35-46-1 in 6 seasons.....will this man ever achieve above .500 ?

I would have agreed with you last week, but with the shitty way our defense played this week, I doubt it would have mattered.

The offense is overachieving, even with a bad running game and a terrible right side of the line.

I have to disagree. 18 yds from your main RB in game 1 and 25 yds from AP in game 2 is not overachieving. Keenum is looking better because they’re giving him at least one free garbage time drive and TD per game or half. That’s 75 yds and a TD added onto his numbers. Or yesterday it was 150-odd yds and two TD. Take that off and he doesn’t look so hot.

You are what your record says you are. We are going to be a 5-6 win team and ppl are going to be still raving about how Case has these great stats because they give him a freebie to waste time and end the game. Case can’t win games - just free yardage when it doesn’t matter.

Play Haskins and work toward a QB who can actually WIN GAMES.

Haskins can’t win games on his own with this damn team..we gave no running game and our d can’t stop anybody and we are giving up 30 plus per game .. I’m all for letting him play but I hate to see him get hammered .. If the QB was the problem then hell yes let’s put him in! We have not stopped anybody in the 2cnd half .. let’s put the blame on where it belongs it’s the OWNER then Bruce then Gruden then manusky .. if Haskins had started day one we would still be 0-2 and calling for the Case ..the only hope this team has to EVER go back to any kind of elite team is for One of two things to happen ..Snyder sells team to a owner who gets it or he hires a real football GM that he will listen to and start from scratch.. what we have now is a 5-8 win team at best every year its the same crap..

Okay, let's look at the garbage stats:

Philly game:
- last drive 11/16 75 yds 1td
- stats without last drive: 19/28, 305 yds, 2 tds, 0 int

Cowpukes game:
- last drive 8/10 75 yds 1 td, 0 int
- stats without last drive: 18/27 146 yds, 1 td, 0 int

The thing is, Case and the passing game were not supposed to even get those garbage-time-less stats. Everyone (even Gruden) expected this team to run the ball and have a strong defense, and have Case stink up the joint and our receiver do nothing.

If we had a better run game and a better (right side) of the o-line, I'd be fine with putting in Haskins. Kid has a lot of talent, but unless he can somehow make the defense play better, I don't see the point in putting him yet.

I agree with your post, Ruhskins.

If our offensive line would stop with the penalties and better block in the running, along with the defense being halfway decent then some would be singing a different tune.

Keenum has missed on some plays, no doubt. But he's down the list of issues. This team is simply poorly-coached, IMO.

Re: How Long Will Jay Gruden Last This Season as Head Coach?

The penalties 100% ruined 1st half scoring opportunities.

Normally, I hate Collinsworth, but on SNF he was talking about how he wishes holding penalties were only 5 yards. I don't necessarily agree with changing the rule, but he was basically implying that a holding call on a drive means you aren't scoring. We had at least 3 in the 1st half.

Also, I think defensive hold penalties should just be 5 yards and not an automatic 1st down.

I don't like the automatic 1st down part of it. It can be 3rd and 27, and a hold 7 yards into the route is a 1st down.
Then the decision to sit the greatest RB of this decade, the strongest offensive weapon they had last year, Hours before kick off, against a division rival, on the road in hostile territory, with a quarterback taking his first real game snaps in this system and would need a run game badly..........for an unproven running back, taking his first real game snaps, coming back from injury, and a “special teams” player signed earlier in the week named Smallwood.....

Tell me, how many yards did Guice have? What did Smallwood do to help? How many breaks did our defense get in the second half?

Another HORRIBLE decision by our head coach that had DISASTROUS consequences. You pay a head coach to make good decisions in preparing for games, getting the players preparing, setting the team up for success and making good decisions on the fly during games. Gruden has failed miserably in each of those areas. Why are they still paying him, and why does he still have a job?????

Oh, and to add to the pile, there was the decision to award P Richardson with a nice contract. What has that piece of garbage done for Washington? Meanwhile, we have Mr Irrelevant out performing him, and watching DeSean Jackson (the guy Richardson replaced) torch the league.

This front office and coaching staff make one bad decision after the other...

Alex Smith was watching the game next to Dan Snyder. I hope he was doing his best football whisperer and talking about what this franchise needs.

It wouldn’t matter. Snyder was probably thinking about putting an addition on his yacht. I just pray that one day he will wake up and be like you know what I don’t want to be hated anymore and bow out. But praying is for the birds so....

I wonder, has there been any coach who rose above mediocrity in his first 4-6 seasons with a team and then gone on to major success with that same team?
