Why would any of these guys want to sign with a team to be the 3rd DT? I mean if they do great, I just don't get the expectation of signing guys that are probably waiting for a starting opportunity. |
Re: Jags Postgame
I think the Detroit game will tell us a lot if we're really going to have a good season. It is a very winnable road game against a team that really needs to win. Detroit has had a ton of close, tough losses under Campbell. We need to secure the W and start out 2-0 this season.

I'm not so sure that they'd have a reasonable expectation of starting (and I emphasize reasonable; they may have unreasonable expectations of starting). They're not on a team right now for a reason. I would hope that we'd at least reach out and kick the tires to see what it would take to sign one of these dudes. |

I think perhaps saying that these guys expect to be starters may be a strong statement, but, I feel that these may be the type of players that may be holding on for the right opportunity. Suh for instance, has back to back 1-year deals with the Bucs. I just feel that a player like him is not going to sign to be the 3rd DT behind Allen and Payne. Some players may be stubborn like that, and will play the waiting game (see Landon Collins, who is still a free agent). |

Why wouldn’t they? Beats them sitting at home not getting a paycheck. From what I’ve read and seen, Donovan could surprise. He has really good size. |
Re: Jags Postgame
I thought it was a good win. It's hard to know how a team will come out in week 1 - the first time a true game plan is put together, and all the starters are in for the majority of the game.
Considering all the new pieces I was pretty impressed with how the offense performed. When was the last time this team scored two TDs on their first two drives, and then ended the same game with a kneel down? I thought the defense was pretty good collectively. They gave up 22 points, but 10 of those came off turnovers. Some individual players got beat, but the players on the other side are trying to make plays too. It happens, and will happen again. Some keep talking about all the plays Jacksonville left out there, but so did Washington. "If Etienne made this catch, or if Lawrence didn't over throw this guy, if they didn't miss that FG..." I mean Washington turned the ball over three times, had dropped balls and penalties that killed drives, and still won. Don't get me wrong, the middle of the game was rough (Punt, Fumble, Punt, Punt, Interception, Interception), but the beginning and the end was very nice (TD, TD.....TD, TD, Kill the clock). Nit-pickers will be nit-pickers, and that's all good. There's always room for improvement, but I think the Jaguars will be better than last year, and they will beat some good teams. It was a worthy opponent to start the season, and we got the W.
Agree with your overall point. It's a week to week league, so I'll take the W, not matter how. Sure you'd like to dominate from start to finish but that was a highly entertaining game, and I'd rather have them show some fight and come back from behind ! Carson Wentz gave us a highlight of who he is, capable of amazing throws, and will make some ugly mistakes every now and then. The second INT isn't that bad IMO, risky throw but not every Dlineman makes that catch... Positives: + Receiving corps, it's what we expected and more + Oline played well. I like Schweitzer and wasn't a fan of automatically handing the starting job to Turner... But after seeing him in action, I love Trai Turner already, even banged up (pretty banged up I guess cuz they had + Saahdiq Charles in there for some snaps, and he flat out sucks, no more excuses) he played well and made some physical plays out in space. And I just love how he looks, the man is a cube, a tough mfkin cube + Darrick Forest his hard hitting ability was obvious from the little we saw him last year, but he's making plays against the pass too, love it + Dline, obviously Allen is a monster, Payne made some plays, Toohill and Smith-Williams are quality rotational guys + Defense made some plays when we needed + Offense is gonna be exciting to watch Negatives: - Missed tackles, I like Holcomb but that missed tackle on Robinson's TD was unacceptable - Defense is mediocre, LB play will be underwhelming, secondary will be frustrating all year long. Honestly, barring a dramatic turn around I want JDR gone at the end of the year, and if it gets ugly I'd be ok with a mid-season firing |

I saw John Bates make some great blocks yesterday, he was mauling people.

Re: Jags Postgame
Oh, and ma gawd I hope Curtis Samuel can stay healthy. Even with the fumble, monster game. On top of the speed, the man has some moves!
And while I'm at it, miscellaneous (screw the spelling of that word) thoughts: McCain is bad. I hope they can find a way to have Curl and Forrest on the field together and dear Bobby on the bench. Slow, bad angles, missing tackles. Loved Wentz getting the Jags' D on the hard count 2 times. Veteran skills. |
Re: Jags Postgame
Gems from the All 22. You guys don't me to see Curtis Samuel having a monster game, Holcomb missing a tackle on the TD, or Darrick Forrest making plays all over the place.
But here are some plays were interesting and material for discussion/occasions to improve our collective football knowledge. Found Schweitzer's injury play, hope it's not too serious... ...Leading to Trai Turner taking the field and making this nice play against a stunt on his first snap Turner really had a solid game, just a play on a screen that I liked, I just love that he's enthusiastic to hit the DB, more than he needed to, he's still banged up and out there diving to hit DBs... He'll be fun to watch once 100% healthy. For whatever reason (injury concern I guess) Turner was out for a serie, allowing Saahdiq Charles to show once again he's not even a decent NFL back up. (Nice play by Wentz). Now let's rant a bit about our secondary: McCain flat out sucks, this catch is on him (and you probably remember the awful angle he took on a run early in the game, the announcer mentioned it), Fuller gets beaten but he's supposed to have safety help inside WJ3 had a bad game, and he dodge a bullet here, had Lance seen him tangling his feet and falling, that may have gone all the way On top of letting guys run wide open in the passing game, the secondary doesn't play their responsibilities in the run game well. Don't know if it's Fuller, St Juste or McCain, but somebody isn't in his gap. Unacceptable, secondary run gap responsibility usually is super simple. And Nickel being our new base defense, they gotta play it right. And to finish on a nicer note, I just enjoy watching this play. I think it's very well designed. Don't know if it's a common concept or not (I'm sure somebody here will know the concept's name), but I think it's very hard to defend unless you're in quarter. Here the Jags bring 5, in Cover 3, it's hard to blame the LB initially on Logan Thomas for letting him pass into the deep and biting on Samuel's crossing route, McKissick as a check down has the flat to curl LB's attention, and Dotson takes the deep CB with him. Nice job Scott Turner, ain't it ? |

Re: Jags Postgame
You made a lot of good observations, as usual, Frenchy.
Trai Turner stood out for me, too. He is an exciting player but I didn't expect him to play at that high level. I love the way Wes Schweitzer plays football but Trai needs to start when he is completely healthy. Then we'll have our valuable Swiss army knife (Wes) ready to come off the bench when needed. I was excited when we drafted Charles but I think we now know that he isn't the player I had hoped he'd become. I'd really like to know why RR fired our former DL coach and yet our DB coach is still here although he hasn't come close to getting his group to play their assignments as a unit. We've had serious problems in the secondary for years. |

Bates may be the best blocking TE in the NFL and that's not an exaggeration on my part. |

I agree and some probably looking for a long contract which we won't be offering. Putting your body through a season for what you feel is less than your value just doesn't make sense. |
