Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I really don't want Ron Rivera to make the hiring decision on a new OC. I just want a hiring freeze until the sale of the franchise is finalized, even if the new HC turns out to be Daffy Duck and he hires Elmer Fudd as his OC. I am s-o-o-o done with DS and RR. I just want them both to just GTHO ASAP.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I have read several articles that claim Washington is chasing Derrick Carr. I hope the team is not stupid enough to make a trade for him. He is another high priced, overrated, short on ability quarterback like the last one they traded away the house for. In all of his seasons combined, he as about a 60% completion rate. He is one of the lower level starting quarterbacks. I hope Washington passes. He will cost another arm and leg for a less than capable QB.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
They should give Carr a look only if he hits free agency. I definitely wouldn't trade anything for him.

As much as this contradicts my previous posts, I rather run with Sam then give what ever it takes to to get Carr. Carr at best put us just out of the playoffs or a one and done team. To be successful in the NFL you need a good/great QB on a rookie contract, that is the sweet spot. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Starting to think my plan would be to find a veteran QB in free agency, someone who can start if needed, but ideally would backup and mentor Howell. Someone that won't break the bank. Thinking along the lines of an Andy Dalton type of player. And then add another QB later in the draft to develop.

Welcome to where I am. Dalton or Brissett would be good veteran options. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Brissett might be the answer.

I agree with this with a caveat if they like a QB anywhere in the draft get him simply because the roster is above average/good. Our roster doesn’t have a lot of immediate needs right now…but do so without moving up. |

Ditto. Brissett is who I mentioned with this exact recommendation. Dalton would be ok too. |

Commanders twitter is bitching about the lack of OC's that are interested in coming here lol... Why would they come coach for a lame duck HC that is 90% fired after next yr barring some miracle playoff run

I'd actually be OK with just giving it to Zampese or Shurmur. I doubt anyone is here more than 1 year anyways. If Snyder sells the team, one of us could be the OC and I would be happy next season. I'm under the assumption that no one in the front office or coaching staff will be here in 2024. |

Hard to get a solid OC candidate with a number of HC positions open. People need to be patient, but we know that's not going to happen. |

I do think though, that if RR can find a coordinator that can get this offense moving as it should - at a level equal to its talent - this team will be right back in the thick of the NFC East race next year. Depending on how things shake out, I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that RR and his staff will be shown the door. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Unlikely he'd come here, and maybe even us interviewing him, but I'd consider Leftwich for OC. He could be good for Howell, especially having worked well with Brady, until this season at least.

I'm surprised Tampa fired Leftwich. He was handpicked by Arians so I thought he would at least get another chance with them. Maybe they know something the public doesn't. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
That offense was so off this year. I watched a few games, and it was amazing to see the receivers and TB not on the same page so often. Last in the league in rushing. They won a few games due to TB being TB, but that offense just never looked to be anything special. I don't know whose fault it ultimately was, but for me it falls on Leftwich. I'd rather not see him here.

Leftwich had the #3 ranked offense the year Winston was starting for them at QB, and had a top 10 offense until this past year. |

If we're talking about the 2019 season, they also had one of the worst defenses in the NFL, so those numbers are likely skewed by the fact that they played from behind all season. After that, yeah Tom Brady can elevate pretty much any offense... It doesn't explain what happened this year though. He was fired so someone didn't think he was getting it done. It's not like they don't have talent either. Seems a similar situation as what transpired here actually; not a great O-line, but enough weapons to get it done, and didn't. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Can help but think that Arians had a lot to do with Bucs success, as soon as he goes Leftwich struggles, or maybe Tom doesn't respect him and that is picked up by the other players,

Per Nicki Jhabvala: WC assistants Ben Jacobs, Ryan Kerrigan, Travelle Wharton, and Jennifer King have been selected to serve in coaching roles at the Senior Bowl.

Greg Roman anyone?

To go to his unique scheme I would take more time than Ron probably has…plus he so TE centric that with our personnel at WR it would be a waste imo. Not a good fit |

Interesting tweet by Al Galdi
@AlGaldi Alex Smith's 2011 & 2012 Colin Kaepernick's 2012-2014 Tyrod Taylor's 2015 Lamar Jackson's 2019 & 2020 All of those quality seasons happened w/ Greg Roman as offensive coordinator. Impressive track record w/ mobile QBs. Could do some very good things w/ Sam Howell. #Commanders |

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Yeah, I like what Roman did as offensive coordinator in general but only if we have a QB like Lamar Jackson. I definitely do not want us to turn Howell into a running QB or get one. I prefer a real QB.

Total record for all those seasons is 55-22-1. All those team had winning records except for the Tyrod Taylor's 2012 season with the Bills, which was 8-8. I can't tell if the records were solely due to the offense, but I care more about wins and losses as opposed to passing yards. |

Washington will interview Miami Asst HC/RB coach Eric Studesville on Monday and also will talk to Rams asst HC/TE coach Thomas Brown next week for the vacant OC position, per source. JP Findlay's favorite candidate. |

I wonder why Thomas Brown is JP Findlay's favorite candidate.

Brown is 36. I like that. Seems like an up and comer. He is a Mark Richt guy. Much rather him than a Shurmur

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
We just need someone who can get this offense humming. Figure out what we can do well, and do it - often. Don't get cute, don't outsmart yourself, use the myriad of weapons at your disposal, and keep it simple.
The D should be as good or better next year. These are the only free agents on the defense: Payne, Bostic, Mayo, Reaves, Wildgoose, & Obada. Figure out a way to keep Payne and Reaves, draft a shutdown CB in round 1, sign Tremaine Edmunds, revamp the O-line, and we're headed to Super Bowl LVIII. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I like the Charles London and Thomas Brown OC interviews, hopefully we get one of those 2.
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I don't know anything about any of these potential candidates. A young "up and comer" sounds good, but isn't that what ST was? Sometimes I feel like we're chasing our tail...
For some reason I just think it's going to be Zampese or Shurmur. Which is fine. |
