Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)
What do you guys think about the possiblity of the Skins trading up into the early second round to possibly grab a Devin Thomas, Limas Sweed, or Malcolm Kelly? Especially considering that Limas Sweed has a good chance of falling into the early 2nd round.
Or do we reach on a Joe Jurivicious/Kevin Walter type in Jordy Nelson or hope a guy like Jerome Simpson falls to us in the third? Remember the team is probably targeting Tony Hills and Mike McGlynn with that comp selection so lineman lovers fear not. The team will find a quality lineman in the third round |
Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)
i think campbell at 21 is a terrible value and only a 50/50 shot at even addressing our DL situation. maybe he's a younger phillip daniels, but that's not really what i want :/.
harvey's safer than merling, and the vikes like him more from what i've seen, so he's pretty much a lock to go 17 at the latest, though stranger things have happened. either way, we're about 4 picks too late to get a high potential stud, and about 4-7 picks too late to have any real chance at a trade down offer (unless someone is SUPER high on a qb and needs to trade back in, but i don't see something obvious for our pick specifically, so that's probably not a great bet for us). one of the cb's might make it though, albert might make it... both are better values than campbell. I don't really like ANY of the WRs so far, though hardy may be the one most worthy of taking a flyer on... groves is an okay pick, but he's not a DE. maybe he turns into another merriman, and if that's the case... he's better value than campbell, but i don't know him well since it's not a position of need and i like LBs better in the 2nd round. If he's like willis or lawson or merriman or... then he's a good pick. I'll look into it. |

That's simply not first day material. Sweed and Kelly are both good players, but if we were trading up from the 2nd round, the best deal I would offer would be the 2nd, and our 6th rounder. That's only going to move us up a few spots. I'd rather sit tight at 51 and try to land Manningham, or just pick at a position of greater need if the value isn't good. |

I'll look into it.
The thing is that according to Vinny Cerato the front office puts a premnium on guys that the coaching staff has worked with (Fletcher, Smoot, Collins) and since Campbell had his best season with Palimero, the chances are that the front office will very comfortable drafting him. At this point I'm not arguing weather or not Campbell is a good prospect, rather I'm arguing that the chances of the front office taking Campbell on draft day are high. Right now I'd rate it at 70%. With that said after watching film on Campbell (ie YouTube highlights) I came away impressed. The guy moves very well and seems to make good use of his long arms. He's also pretty good using rip and swim moves as well as redirecting inside when he has to. I also liked how he would lock up against offensive tackles on running plays and ride them until he got to the ball carrier. However the thing that surprised me was how quick and agile he is, which was even more shocking after seeing how stiff he looked during the combine when the defensive lineman were going through drills that tested their lateral movement. Also Todd McShay said that sports hernias scare teams a lot, though at the same time I heard that Merling would be fully recoverd about a week before the draft. So I wonder, do the Redskins take the safe pick over the guy their familar with from a program they like. On top of that both Mayock and McShay, who spend an awful lot of time talking to team personel have Campbell going in the 1st round which tells me that Campbell is still considered a 1st round pick in many league circles. The team has also mentioned that they like the depth at corner in the second round and the horde of corners they're bringing in for visits seems to confirm that they like the crop of 2nd round corners. On top of that they've also stated that they don't like the crop of 1st tier recievers and probably won't use a 1st round pick on one. So that leaves DL and OL as possible first round picks, and according to JLC, Blache was promised a D-Lineman early in the draft. Ironically the selection of the other Campbell at 25 back in 2005 shows that the front office is willing to pull the trigger on guys projected to go in the early second while they're on the clock in the first. |

On the rise
1. Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU -- The draft process is grueling for all prospects, but Dorsey's path has proven to be especially arduous. The passing of his grandmother, combined with the Jan. 7 BCS title game pushing back the beginning of his training process, prevented Dorsey from taking part in the workout portion of the combine. Speculation then began to spread regarding a possibly lingering 2006 stress fracture injury that could have sent Dorsey's draft stock free-falling. Since then, though, many teams have cleared Dorsey medically and his solid all-around showing at LSU's pro day helped ease any concerns regarding a 2007 knee injury. Dorsey has finally come full circle and is once again in the elite tier of talent for 2008. Draft projection: Best case is the Rams at No. 2 overall, worst case is the Chiefs at No. 5. The Falcons, who own the third pick, seemingly have the greatest interest in Dorsey at this point while the Raiders would consider him with the fourth pick as well. Draft projection: I still think Albert projects better at guard in the NFL, which explains my mid-first round grade. Since we don't need Chad Johnson and can get a good receiver in the draft my first two selection are going to be:

You want to develop someone.") 3-21 - Owen Schmitt - FB - West Virginia (Vinny says: "A backup fullback to Mike Sellers is also a need because the West Coast offense requires more depth at fullback") 3-33 - Marcus Monk - WR - Arkansas (Vinny says: "Receivers are strong in the second or third round.") (Don't worry I'm not crazy, apparently Monk has been working his way up draft boards lately and at this point I figure that Nelson and Simpson are both gone) 5th - Jamar Adams - S - Michigan 6th - Rudolph Hardie - DE - Howard 7th - Andrew Crummey - C/G - Maryland 7th Comp - Alvin Bowen - OLB - Iowa State 7th Comp - Kyle Wright - QB - Miami |
If we were to land the 12th spot, what would we be comfortable giving up and who would we(you) take at 12th overall?
Well considering the flavor the week is Offensive Line the guys the team would be looking at is Chris Williams (T/G Vanderbilt) who Joe Bugel is really high on, and Branden Albert (thats right SkinsFanSince91, jk but that is who they'd probably target at the 12th spot should they move up). The price is probably a 1st and a 2nd, but with that said it would be harder to fill other needs down the line. Personally I would really prefer a trade down, but at the same time I wouldn't complain if we got a versitle OL prospect that could really prevent a drop in LT play should Samuals ever go down (knock on wood to ward off evil spirits) while at the same time provide a viable starting option at LG or RG. Jeff Otah (T Pitt) is also a possiblity, as he seems to have the size to play Guard but I haven't heard anything about his potential to move inside. Also Malcolm Kelly's stock just dropped BIGGGGGG TIME today. It's possible that he could be available when we pick in the 2nd round. I'd label the odds at 45% for now. Oklahoma (April 9) Twenty-five NFL teams sent representatives to Norman, Okla., to see four key players in a follow-up to last month's school pro day. Prospects worked out indoors on Field Turf. And as an added quirk to the event, the person throwing passes in the position drills was a former quarterback from arch-rival Nebraska -- Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch. Bengals WR coach Mike Sheppard ran the receiving drills and Bengals assistant DB coach Louis Cioffi ran the DB drills for Smith and Walker...... » TE Joe Jon Finley (6-6 3/8, 252: Ran the 40 in 4.85 and 4.86, had a 31 ˝-inch vertical jump, 9-foot, 9-inch long jump, 4.16 short shuttle, 7.11 cone drill, ran position drills and kept everything else from the combine. Kelly looked very good. » DB Reggie Smith (6-0 1/8, 192): Ran the 40 in 4.65 and 4.61, had a 39 ˝-inch vertical jump, 10-foot, 9-inch long jump, 4.03 short shuttle, 6.70 cone drill, ran position drills. » CB Marcus Walker (5-10 3/8, 194): Ran the 40 in 4.65 and 4.62, had a 37-inch vertical jump, 10-foot, 1-inch long jump, 4.10 short shuttle, 6.90 cone drill, ran position drills. |
Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)
Possibly Ryan Clady as well at 12.
I'd rather trade down though. I know I've spoken a lot about Atlanta, but another one would be trading down with Jacksonville (although we're actually going after many of the same players supposedly) and picking up their #26 overall pick as well as their high 3rd. So let's say we did that and went something along the lines of 1. DE Merling (if the Jags haven't taken him at #21) 2. WR (best available) 3. OL McGlynn/Hill 3. OL Scheuning 3. DT Harrison 5. DB Bowman |

New Mock Draft: Because I Can
1-21 - Trade with Falcons for 2-6 and 3-3 to prevent Dolphins from grabing the top QB prospect at top of the 2nd round. Most likely Chad Henne or Brian Brohm. This could just as easily be a trade with the other Indian team in Kansas City. Ironically that would lead us with an earlier 2nd pick but a slightly later 3rd. Basically whoever loses out on Ryan will possibly try to move up into the 1st round to make sure the Dolphins or the Packers don't select the QB they want. The Ravens are also a possiblity at this point.
2-6 - Malcolm Kelly - WR - Oklahoma - The team covets Kelly, and due to his drop in stock they have a hard time passing a guy like Kelly falling this far in the draft 2-20 - Dre Moore - DT - Maryland - Blache gets his DT complete with his ability to collapse the pocket and get into the backfield 3-3 - Duane Brown - T/G - Virginia Tech - Per NFL.com "The only thing that worries scouts about Brown is his learning ability, which could be an issue at the pro level. A coach that will both light his fire but bring him along slowly while revamping his technique might find gold with Brown." If that doesn't say Joe Bugel I don't know what does. This pick could also be a corner like Charles Godfrey out of Iowa if Brown is gone 3-21 - Owen Schmitt - FB/RB - West Virginia - The best player available and if the team ends up trading Betts then this would be an excellent pick. 3-33 - Zach Bowman - CB - Nebraska - The front office gets a potential first round talent that might be able to hold down the fort until either he develops or the Redskins can find a better prospect next year. They could also take a chance with a less known guy like Dwight Lowery. 5-21 - Wallace Gilbert - DE - Alabama - Team finds a potentail replacement for Phillip Daniels at LDE Thats all for today |

Some peopel have us selecting DE, Groves out of Auburn in the draft. I think this bit of news hurts his draft stock. They say this surgury shouldn't affect him but I still wouldn't take that chance in the first round. |
Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)
I think that if the Redskins trade back into the draft then a guy they'll look at in the early third will be Kendall Langford, which would give Blache that relentless interior pass rusher that he wants, while Duane Brown would give Bugel the type of lineman with enough upside to make him crazy. For example we could easily see a draft that looks like
Early 2nd - Malcolm Kelly - WR - Oklahoma 2-20 - Duane Brown - T/G - Virginia Tech Early 3rd - Kendall Langford - DT/DE - Hampton 3-21 - Dwight Lowery - CB - San Jose State 3 comp - Owen Schmitt - FB - West Virginia Early 5th - Corey Lynch - S - App State 5-21 - Chad Rhinehart - G/T - Northern Iowa 6-20 - Dennis Dixon - QB - Oregon 7-21 - Alvin Bowen - OLB - Iowa State The same thing could happen at 21, though instead the team would wait until the 5th round to select a corner or they'll add a stop gap some time after the draft. Also I think this might have been posted elsewhere, but I don't think it hurts to post it again. Cardinal rules Brohm likely to be No. 2 QB taken in draft; more mail Posted: Tuesday April 8, 2008 12:39PM; Updated: Thursday April 10, 2008 11:47AM Louisville's Brian Brohm had a career-high 12 interceptions in 2007, but balanced it with a personal-best 30 touchdown passes. Gary Bogdon/SI MAILBAG Peter King will answer your questions each week in Monday Morning Quarterback: Tuesday Edition. With the draft 18 days away, the two questions I'm hearing everywhere are these: Who will be the second QB taken and how high will he go? Answer: Louisville's Brian Brohm, and I think a team will have to be selecting in the 20s to get him. There are actually three QB candidates to be chosen after likely top-five pick Matt Ryan of Boston College. Brohm is the clear favorite, followed by Michigan's Chad Henne (he has an NFL-type release right now) and Delaware's Joe Flacco (who has the biggest Howitzer in the draft). Now, the reason Brohm is inching up the charts from his high-second-round status of the postseason is because more and more teams -- like quarterback-needy Atlanta and Baltimore -- have been going to school on Brohm. They realize they were a little hasty in knocking him down from his top-five-in-the-draft level of 2007. A year ago Brohm chose to stay in school for his senior season instead of coming out and getting picked high in the first round. And all anyone saw on Brohm's 2007 résumé were flaws. Product of the system. Robotic. Not nimble in the pocket. Still, under new coach Steve Kragthorpe, Brohm had his best all-around season, completing 65.1 percent of his passes and throwing for 30 touchdowns while the Louisville defense and running game struggled mightily. As one GM said to me at the NFL meetings last week in Florida, "I think we picked him apart too much last year." I agree. How can a guy be a round worse when he does what everyone in the NFL tells juniors -- stay in school? He not only stayed, he played well, albeit on a 6-6 team. I think what you're going to see two Saturdays from now is a team like the Ravens, Falcons or Chiefs trade up from their perch high in the second round to try to get Brohm, assuming none of the three take Ryan earlier in the first round. The team that has the most ammunition to move up from a high-second-round perch is Atlanta, with six picks between 34 and 103. Plus, Brohm has impressed the Falcons in predraft film study; offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, in particular, is said to be a Brohm fan. Now onto your emails... |
Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)
Interesting to see someone mention that Carlos Rogers has lived up to expectations. It makes me wonder if the disdain for Carlos Rogers has to do more with us passing up Shawn Meriman than Rogers actual performance.

He has long arms that he effectively uses to jam receivers out of their release in press coverage, knocking them off their routes and disrupting timing. He has loose hips that are fluid in transition in off coverage and the speed to turn and run vertically with wide receivers on deep balls. He has strong ball skills and can adjust to bad passes as well as track deep throws. He is able to snatch the ball or knock it down using his wingspan. His good technique and anticipation serve him well because he lacks the extra gear to run with elite receivers and does not have great recovery speed if out of position. As good as he is in man coverage, he is too soft in zone coverage at times and allows receivers too much room. That can be a problem because he likes to peek into the backfield and is susceptible to biting on play-action. When he guesses wrong he is not a good open-field tackler. Rogers could add size to his frame, but he has the athleticism to handle coverage assignments and the overall skills to have a long career. |
Thomas is overrated garbage. 1 year JUCO, <100yds receiving his Sophomore year, breaks out as a junior with 79 catches, and bolts before people realize his season was a fluke. Stay far, far, far away from Thomas.
Of course Quake, if we could land Campbell with the 51st pick...this could still be a solid draft even if the first round pick was a bust :D
i thought the same thing about Thomas but something makes me want him |

I've just about had it with JLC's blog. It used to be a great source but right now it's at the point where I can learn more about the Skins on ES (aka the neverending sea of pointless threads).
And personally I love ES these days. Kids over there are so quick to click on the New Thread button, it's hilarious. Some of my personal favorites playing right now: If Kenny Phillips gets drafted by a division rival(21 related) Chris Wilson future Pro Bowl sack specialist? Check Out my Mock Draft...give me your thoughts Will Zorn win an NFC East game in '08? If The Skins Had The 1st Overall Pick - Smootsmack!! (JLC's Blog Is) In The Tank In a blog recently concerning the Redskins' spending, I made reference to owner Daniel Snyder's other businesses being "in the tank." David Donovan, the Redskins' General Counsel, took issue with this and sent a letter to washingtonpost.com and The Washington Post complaining that the statement unfairly and inaccurately characterized Snyder's business acumen. The businesses I had in mind were those with prominent local ties - his Red Zebra radio stations, and Six Flags theme parks. I was not referring to any of Mr. Snyder's other businesses. My opinion was based on the fact that Red Zebra's Arbitron ratings have been poor and fans have complained about its weak signals, particularly during broadcasts of Redskins games. As for Six Flags, its stock price fell from around $12 a share to less than $2 a share after Snyder led a hostile takeover of the company in 2005, installing a new CEO and winning shareholder approval to oust the existing directors. Mr. Donovan counters that "Red Zebra has continued to expand in an industry in which other companies are shedding stations and expects to achieve double-digit growth during 2008 and 2009." He also says that Mr. Snyder neither owns nor manages Six Flags - he is "a stockholder and non-managing Chairman of the Board" so it is therefore not his business. |

1. Merling or Campbell 2. Best available receiver |

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)
So this morning I was telling Matty (Matty and I talked a lot this morning) that rumors around here and Redskins Park were that Kelly might even be available late in round 2...and then BAM! He reportedly runs a 4.63 and a 4.66 in his private pro day.
He bitched and moaned only to drop from a 4.68 to a 4.63 (at best)? He's plumetting So we can go 1. Merling 2. Kelly or if Merling isn't there, we can possibly trade down out of the first round and into the early second and get Campbell or Jackson. Next Saturday is going to be fun |

Interesting article from NFL Draft Countdown. Personally I don't consider them the best source for information on prospects but they do provide very manageable info as well as college stats for all four years, which to me is a huge reason why I frequently visit their site. Anyway I thought it was funny that some of the players the Redskins were looking at were being compared to current Redskin players.
