I’m disappointed in the GM decision, because he’s older, just ANOTHER guy from Carolina and his record hasn’t been that great.
To me the big decision if how they tend to and pay KYLE SMITH. Increase Kyle’s salary and job title and draft/FA involvement. Perhaps Deputy GM? Keep him here until he can impress Rivera with his GM skills and perhaps he can move up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
None of us know what the front office structure is going to look like with responsibilities/roles/etc. But let’s be honest, Marty Hurney ain’t calling the shots and pulling the trigger on talent acquisition. That’s Ron. Hurney is going to be the leg work guy and work with Mayhew to share the load. I was pessimistic about the Hurney hire at first glance, but the more I think about it, and now with the hiring of Mayhew, I’m not worried about it at all. Hurney won’t be the de facto talent decision maker. As long as Ron calls the shots, I could care less who he entrusts to do the grunt work for him. If he’s good enough for Ron, he should be good enough for all of us know nothing armchair football gurus until proven otherwise. Plus I think we are just so conditioned as fans to expect failure as a fan base, we can’t even process something being conducted within the franchise in a responsible and positive way. |
Re: Marty Hurney Thread
So far Ron really hasn't made any decisions that have been flops or complete failures, so I'm going to trust him until we have a good reason not to.

Marty Hurney Thread
I feel like we went from not enough hands in the cookie jar to too many. Hope not only that they all know their shit, but that they all work well together. No ego bullshit from anyone. Guess time will tell. I definitely feel good about it at the moment. Thats just my gut talking though.

Re: Marty Hurney Thread
So Mayhew takes Santos vacant job as pro personnel, Smith stays as college personnel. Hurney is GM. Sounds good.
Seems Eric Stokes (our residing Director of Pro Personnel) was looked over/diminished but he is young, with Panthers for 5 years before coming here so its not a huge diss. Making him Director of Pro Personnel was probably a title bigger than he should have at his young tenure. Jeff Scott has been with us for 9 years and was made the Asst Director of Pro Personnel so he had to work under a younger brand new guy last year. ---------------------- Finally ... Dan Snyder is paying actual money out of his own pocket to give this team a proper organizational structure. We had no HR, no GM, very few scouts vs others teams etc ... took forever to get a training facility and it was a bubble ... had no advanced rehab/PT machines in house until 2 years ago. Dan would hire a Bruce Allen, let him wear 4 hats and pay 1 salary. Now he has to pay 4 guys 4 salaries to do 4 jobs. Now jobs should be done more competently. Dan Snyder is top 3 most cheap owners in the league. Finally, he is paying competent guys to have a competent staff vs he pocketing maybe 750k a year by having bare minimum staff.
i think he is cheap in some areas like you mentioned but he will overpay on free agents like Collins... |
Re: Marty Hurney Thread
Don't really understand why Smith would want to go to the Rams or 49ers. Snead and Lynch aren't going anywhere as their GM's.
I'm not saying he'd go as a GM, given he hasn't been offered an interview this offseason so far it's fair to say nobody's looking at him for that role. But if he feels disrespected or that he hasn't earned the trust of Ron he could ask for permission to look for a different role elsewhere. Right now I'm gonna ease off the talk of him leaving until we hear concrete talk. Just trying to be ready if it happens. I'm a fan of more eyes and ears helping Ron, obviously he can't shoulder the load himself. Hopefully it all works out and everybody is on the same page and Mayhew/Hurney help our drafts even more. |
Re: Marty Hurney Thread
Mayhew as GM and Hurney in front office role. Loved MM as a player, but as a GM.... I do hope they retain Smith somehow.

Per source: Martin mayhew will be the new GM in Washington. ...not sure yet about Marty Hurney or his potential role but Mayhew will be the GM. |

Who said earlier that Hurney doesn't want the GM responsibilities? Sounds like Rivera just wanted Hurney on board in any type of capacity he was willing to offer. |

Not impressed with Mayhew and Hurney’s free agent connections. Didn’t even mention Stafford. |

Re: Marty Hurney Thread
With Mayhew becoming the WFT GM, that gives the 49ers three third round picks since Saleh took the Jets job.
