The irony of being sued for not using the Redskins name is pretty funny. This lawsuit isn't going fucking anywhere. I hope that they don't settle or anything. Go to court and get this shit tossed out. Try to get the legal fees paid for too.

There is no requirement that a team has to be named a specific thing. The name could have been changed just because they wanted to change it for fun.

Nah they actually are Native Americans or at least some are. 4 NAs Redskins fans approached me (was wearing Skins gear) that work at the Casino Del Sol and one of them said she joined that group. They were all pissed about the multiple name and logo changes that occurred in 2020 saying it was a bunch of white assholes saying what is good for them. That said NAGA do have/had a MAGA NA running their twitter who undermined their efforts.

Im aware. She is a nut bag. Also of all the things NA’s have to be pissed about it is the name of a football team? Something off about that.

Edit: did not mean to say there are no NA’s. I worded that poorly. What I meant is that it is being controlled by the far right. They are using NA’s to make it seem like the moral injustice is coming from the “woke” crowd. Again up is down and black is white.

Eunice wasn't the one I met it was a Yaqui in AZ. That said of course they have reason to be mad the non-NA Redskins fans were furious about the change so why shouldn't the NA Redskins fans be as well? And since there were a lot more NA Redskin fans than the 9% of NAs that supported or pushed for the change we now have more angry NAs than we had before over the name.

Oh and yes it was a moral injustice that came from the woke crowd. The name was forced to be changed under an incorrect understanding of the term Redskins how it was used and where it came from, Much of the justification was based on deliberate fabrications or cowardice. An analogy would be a mob hanging an innocent man despite all the evidence showing he was innocent.

Agreed. When I grew up in very rural Northern Michigan in the 80's we had basic television, but only got the Packers and the Lions games. I had some friends that lived at the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and they had a big old satellite system for the community center. Redskins football was a way of life there, so when the Redskins played, approx. 70% of their community gathered at the community center to watch the game. I was lucky enough to have a standing invitation due to my love of the team and having friends in the community. Everyone there had Redskins gear! If the Redskins lost or someone got injured during the game they flew the Redskins flag and their tribal flag that was right next to it at half mast until the next game day. I know for a fact that most of them are/were extremely pissed about the name change!

Well for me, and probably many others who grew up watching the Redskins and are life-long fans of the team that represented that name and logo, I don't know if I'll ever say that talking about them or the name is "pointless". It may be to some, but we all have different experiences and make our own choices on how we will proceed now that it is no longer.

I definitely don't know what the "majority" of Native Americans think about all of this, but I don't mind hearing the stories that people have - especially through personal experience.

Yup. 52 years old Chief. Been a fan since I can remember walking. A lot of relatives from DC. Definitely was/is weird to not be the Redskins. I never thought it was racist or wrong really. Defended it by saying the guy on the helmet was proud etc not like Chief Wahoo. But I find myself now saying what if we had some asian warrior on our helmets and were called the yellowskins? I honestly asked myself that question. It seems wrong to me so my brain overrode my heart and said Redskins is wrong too. [emoji2371]

There are roughly 9 million people in this nation that identify as at least partially NA, and neither you or anyone else knows what a majority of them think. For every poll you want to show me that says out of 1000 people surveyed a majority approve, I can show you one that says a majority don’t. So your statement is certifiably without basis in fact.

Actually an Indian is someone from India. Lol.
I believe the Indians changed because of that and obviously Chief Wahoo was weirdly terrible. So Indians and Redskins were just not correct or considered racist….

I think the overwhelming majority of NA’s that have a problem with it is that they don’t want to be “mascots”. They have a problem with all those teams you mentioned. Indians and Redskins was probably considered even worse. There really isn’t another race of people that are cartooned …. I cant think of a better word. Again I go to the example of say the Atlanta Yellowskins and there is a picture of an asian dude on the helmet. That feels wrong to me. Lol.

Except you can't show me a poll that shows the opposite on this issue. Only two [B]actual [/B]polls were ever conducted on this issue both with identical results. And don't bother raising the study whose purpose was to refute the WP poll. That wasn't a poll (which the study admits) and it's methodology was widely criticized (ie lumping Redskins in groups of other words with actual offensive statements and then extrapolating results you want is what they got raked over the coals for).

I'm fed up of terms like woke being perverted for political/propaganda purposes, especially when it's conflated with cancel culture. 🙄

On the NA topic, I can't remember if I posted this before, but I travelled across the US by bus when I visited in '94. I had the pleasure of spending a few hours sat across from a lovely NA gentleman with his daughter (who was lucky enough to be able to sleep most of the way 😁). We had a nice chat about how my perception of the US prior to travelling differed to my now reality (not massively as it happens). The conversation turned to his perspective, and I mentioned I was a Redskins fan and how he felt about it. His comments stuck with me ever since. To paraphrase "I don't particularly like our culture being used in marketing etc., but we've got far bigger problems than sports team mascots." I think the problem in all this is the topic was always more political than cultural, and frankly its more than exhausted itself.

It's done, it makes no sense to debate going back to the old name, let alone trying to make it happen. I don't like Commanders; I don't hate it and therein lies the rub. If it wasn't so meh as names go, it would drive more passion from each end of the spectrum. And that's why I think it was chosen, so Snyder could divert attention away from his other troubles, with something that was so vanilla it couldn't seriously offend anyone.

Harris needs time to assess and decide how best to rebuild the franchise. While he may have a view on renaming to something more galvanising, its undoubtedly far down his list of priorities. I think it's time we put that debate to bed, at least until the ownership decides its worth revisiting. Otherwise we're just tilting at windmills.
