This is changing the subject a bit, but If we don’t get Vea or Payne, i think there’s an extremely good chance we sign Hankins, who would not only fill that need in the middle of our d-like, but is the best free agent still out there by far. There are no comparable free agents out there at our other positions of need.
My dream scenario is that we sign edmunds/Fitzpatrick/smith/James with our first, Nab a guard with our second, Sign Hankins, Sign CJ Anderson. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Good thinking! That works for me. I think we would be an improved football team, especially so if the OG could start right away. |
Re: With the 13th Pick the Washington Redskins select...
Scrolling across the bottom of espn screen...Redskins: only team to allow at least 4.5 yards per rush the last 3 season.
I can’t stress this enough, NT/DT is a major fucking need. It’s pathetic... |

It's draft day folks!! Finally, (I consider this the official start of the season).
I still hope we trade down |

I’m a va tech homer...and I’m really skeptical about Edmunds and Settle...even more with Settle. So if we don’t take a NT with Payne or Vea, then I would skip Settle and look at the NT from nc state in the 4th. But we absolutely cannot go into the season with Phil Taylor as the NT, it’s not an option and someone should be fired if that’s the case |

Ward may be somewhere between thrilled and happy for me. I'd be over the moon about the first 4, and over the moon if we trade down. Very happy with Ward, and happy with Vea or Payne. I'll be pissed if it's Guice at 13. Really pissed.
Pretty much agree except on Edmunds. I don't see it with him at all. And Payne. No thanks. Trade down and Guice agree 100%. |

To me he's the 2nd best player overall in the draft behind Nelson.. Have watched tape on both and they are both Elite talent. Chubb is right behind at 3. |

My thing with Smith is he has the speed, playmaking ability and can cover a TE. He just looks like a potentially great player that doesn't come off the field. Plus he is a pure tackler. We just haven't had many guys like that on our defense. I just don't think Smith will be there at 13. |

If the safeties are gone and Rosen is there at 10, trade up with Oakland to grab him.

We definitely need to upgrade at DT, but we made upgrades last year - we were just decimated by injuries so we didn’t get to see the improvement over the course of the entire year that we should have seen. This draft is also supposedly fairly deep at NT. It’s not imperative to reach for Vea or Payne when there should be a far superior player like Fitzpatrick, smith, James or Edmunds still on the board.
He isn’t a pass rusher because he doesn’t have any moves and he needs a lot of work in that area of his game, listen to Cooley’s breakdown.
He wins with power and as strong as he is the ridiculous mismatches he has in college aren’t going to happen nearly as often in the pros. I don’t have any problem with taking him if Fitzpatrick, James, Edmunds, and Smith are gone by then, which certainly could happen.
The same could be said for anyone of the players drafted tonight as far as the pros being a tougher ballgame. He will get even stronger and he will get better hopefully in the pass rush department. Just do not underestimate the value that a huge agile piece of meat like Vea brings to the rest of our front 7 as far as them being freed up to get to the quarterback. Also for that matter how that helps the secondary. |

Because he can't penetrate. Allen and Ioannidis would be your nickel package DTs in pass rush situations. He would impact the run game for sure but that's not enough if I could get James, Fitzpatrick, Roquan Smith or Edmunds instead. |

But others will in that case. Tomsula will turn this guy into a three down player in no time. He has a quick first step and the raw tools are all there. Just needs to be coached up. Until that happens ill take third and long all Sunday every Sunday. When it does happen he and Allen will anchor a ferocious front 7. Like I said he is going to be the pick unless someone nabs him first. Guys his size with his athleticism just dont come around often. Let our coaches work on his pass rushing and enjoy the show. |
Re: With the 13th Pick the Washington Redskins select...
Remember, Vea is not the only run stopper available.
If you want to fill the NT position with a bona fide run stopper, and you acknowledge that you're going to use Allen and Ioannidis in the nickel pass rush (why wouldn't you, they were very effective last year), then you should think about these guys in the middle rounds: Derrick Nnadi - Florida State 6'1" 317 Nathan Shepherd - Fort Mays State (D2) 6'4" 315 BJ Hill - NC State 6'3" 311 Harrison Phillips - Stanford 6'3" 307 Tim Settle - VA Tech 6'3" 329 Run stoppers in the middle of the line are very important, but not as impactful to a team overall as a stud MLB with range like Edmunds or Smith, and not nearly as impactful as rangey safeties who can flex down to cover the slot (see: Collins, Landon). We can help our run defense without Vita Vea. There are more rounds in this draft than the 1st. |

Vehemently disagree that he has a quick first step, that just does not show up on tape. He is often among the last out of his stance. He performed at Washington by straight up tossing dudes aside, which has value. But he has shown nothing in college leading me to believe he has a quick first step. Could Tomsula coach him up? Sure. But so could Torrian Gray with Minkah or Derwin James. |

A ton of comparisons to Haloti Ngata only more athletic. Ability to actually line up at different spots along the line. I admittedly have not watched Cooleys breakdown but my God he must have a different opinion of the skill sets this guy has than every other talking head in the business. Anyway Im stoked for the draft and im going to stop trying to sell you guys on Vea now - finish work - buy something really delicious from the micro brew cooler - and watch us knock the first two rounds out of the park! HTTR! Still praying that somehow we stick at 13 and trade way back into the second to pick up a third. If we have to throw in a fourth rounder in 19 im fine with that. [emoji106] |

I wont freak out as long as we dont go that way because Mikah or someone is there. That being said I just think that unless u have that BIG TIME presence in the middle (or heart of) your defense than nothing else will work to its full potential. Every year i watch this team get beat up in the trenches and every year i say next year we will address that shit. Without a beating heart the limbs are useless no matter how sculpted they are. |

Depending on the draft we definitely could still get Hankins, but it would have been nice to have him up front. That said, my biggest fear with this FO is that they continue to ignore the glaring need at NT. Part of my hope that the Giants take Barkley revolves around forcing our FO to take run defense more serious. :( |

The problem is every year there are plenty of options at DL, but this FO devalues the position likely because it's a 2 down player. If we get a clear top 10 guy because 4-6 qb's go before us, then I will be happy. If we trade down, pick up a 3rd and still get a clear upgrade at NT, I will be happy. If we trade down and get a strong RB, Guard combo, and pick up Hankins after the draft, I likely will be happy, But if we trade down, pick up squat for the middle of the DL and then sign more 2nd tier guys like last year, I will not be happy. |

I expect, nay I DEMAND, the Redskins come up with a solution to stopping the run before training camp starts. It absolutely does not have to be Vita Vea. But something must be done.
