Fuck Putin. If Ukraine had any oil, we'd have a carrier parked off the coast and troops on the ground by the thousands. They should kill their economy. Fuck em.

Re: Hey there's about to be a war in Ukraine.

An interesting thing, as we levy these various sanctions. Russia has pegged (or is about to in May) the ruble back to a gold standard, and is on the verge of only selling their oil for gold or rubles.

I will admit, this is an interesting tactic, and if they get enough buy in, maybe it blows up the underbelly of the US banking system. Certainly there are a lot of fearmongers out there that have been warning of it from China for a long time.

I still have this bad feeling that Putin is just playing the western leaders like a fiddle. But maybe he's just a maniac.

Re: Hey there's about to be a war in Ukraine.

I guess the Kiev govt has just accepted that the East is lost. Doesn't seem like they have made much of an attempt to take back or stop the pro Russian movement.

From Breaking News:
Acting Ukrainian President Turchynov says most police in east Ukraine incapable of fulfilling duties, demands dismissal of Luhansk, Donetsk commanders - @Reuters

So it makes me wonder if it really is a case where the Western powers ought to accept that Ukraine should be divided. Hard to defend the Kiev government when a lot of the frontline troops in the East won't.

Transcript of press conference with Putin. If he meant what he says, it ought to be easy to get things backed off the edge. Unfortunately, and I tend to think both the West and Russia are guilty in this aspect, once you encourage the extreme, you can't always rein it back in.

I agree with your first and last sentences, but the middle one is wrong on 3 counts:

1) technically the current government is fairly illegitimate, meaning no votes have been held and they came to power not through an election but through popular revolt.

2) he tells the eastern federalists to hold off on their planned referendum (something the West asked him to do)
In this context, we appeal too, to representatives of southeast Ukraine and supporters of federalisation to hold off the referendum scheduled for May 11, in order to give this dialogue the conditions it needs to have a chance.
3) he states Russia agrees the scheduled vote on the 25th needs to take place.
We must do everything possible to ensure that people in southeast Ukraine understand, feel and believe that after the Ukrainian presidential election on May 24 or 25 their lawful rights will be reliably guaranteed.
The question is the old Reagan adage of trust but verify. He also said that the Russian troops have pulled back, our government says they haven't. Really need an independent party (not that there is one in this case) to show satellite imagery showing whether the tanks and troops have pulled back. Even then it wouldn't take long to be on the road again.

I really think Putin is going to try to take Odessa and other productive regions of Ukraine, the same way he sliced off parts of Georgia and Crimea. I think Ukraine has to worry more about Russians inside it's territory leading groups shooting down helicopters and separatist "federalization" mob attacks, than the Russian troops on the border.

Well, I think you had described it earlier, but they are using pretty much the Crimea strategy. Now that they held the referendums, they are asking to join Russia, and Russia said they were going to seek recognition of the states from the UN (like that is going to happen) and then I imagine they will annex and send in troops. Have to wonder how the Kiev group will respond to that.

Re: Hey there's about to be a war in Ukraine.

I think it's fair to say that any vote with a 90% yes vote is probably rigged. Honestly you would think dictators would learn to make their vote outcomes something like 63/36, because that more closely reflects human tendencies in contested votes. If 90% are voting one way in a critical/divisive election, you can pretty much assume intimidation and fraud.

Basically one of the largest employers in the region said that going toward Russia was going to be bad for everyone.

The story seems like a real positive change in the city of Mariopul (sp?). The more areas that can vote in the upcoming election (which hopefully is fully monitored and sanctioned as legitimate by appropriate international observers) the more the crisis will diminish.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/23/world/europe/tapes-said-to-reveal-polish-minister-disparaging-us-ties.html?_r=0

In a new excerpt from secretly recorded conversations involving some of Poland’s highest officials, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski is quoted as describing his country’s security relationship with the United States as “worth nothing.”

Mr. Sikorski goes on to say in the recording released on Sunday, “It’s even harmful, as it gives Poland a false sense of security.” He also describes the relationship in more vulgar terms.

The deepening scandal over the conversations — apparently recorded in the back rooms of restaurants frequented by Poland’s political elite and leaked to a weekly Warsaw newspaper — has threatened the survival of Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s center-right government.
The scandal erupted last weekend, when Wprost released the first of the transcripts, declining to say where it had gotten them or who it believed had recorded them.

Here is Russia secretly recording and releasing taped conversations between high ranking Polish officials. We remember when this happened around this time last year between our Ukraine Diplomat and the State dept?

Folks pretty easy to see that Russia is doing everything possible to continue to destablize that region. Russia see we've got a weak guy in office.

CNN's take on the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 tragedy so far.

LINK

Putin: "Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine's military campaign against the separatists was to blame.

"This tragedy would not have happened, if there had been peace on that land, or in any case, if military operations in southeastern Ukraine had not been renewed," Putin said in televised remarks. "And without a doubt the government of the territory on which it happened bears responsibility for this frightening tragedy."

Translation: "If only Ukraine had surrendered to the rebels we are arming, our rebels wouldn't have had to shoot down a civilian airliner."

Deleted posts suggest Ukraine rebels downed Malaysian jet in error.

Ukrainian artillery destroyed a "significant" part of a Russian armoured column that crossed into Ukraine during the night, President Petro Poroshenko told British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday, according to the presidential website.

"The president informed that the given information was trustworthy and confirmed because the majority of the machines had been eliminated by Ukrainian artillery at night," the statement said.

Poroshenko did not include any proof for his statement.

Separately, a Ukrainian military spokesman said Ukrainian forces had tracked the Russian armoured column as soon as it crossed onto Ukrainian soil.
