Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
If I am involved with player personnel for this team and had to make a snap, quick judgement on Landry now, I say let him walk.
|
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
I said let him walk. He has had time to show progress and hasn't, at least to my expectations. I'm not worried, as others are, to having to fill another hole in our line up. I was already under the expectations that we would have another sub .500 season next year while we continue to rebuild properly. If it means getting a quality safety play maker here so be it!

Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
I'll be interested to see, if we let him go, who we'll get to replace him...

Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
Isn't it weird that to this point Adrian Peterson has been healthier then Laron?
Actually, this year I think Doughty has played just as well or better than LL. That's of course noting, as others have, that LL hasn't been the same since his achilles injury.
I thought of this more than once during yesterday's game, most notably when Doughty stopped Jacobs by taking out his legs. Doughty took a knee to the helmet but it was an impressive tackle. Landry would have gotten run over or (more likely) simply dove to the turf to avoid contact as he has so many times before. ...it's sad he never learned to tackle through all his years of high school and college ball. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
^ happened once like 3 years ago, doubt it dude, that was just a cheap shot... congrats

I know someone will likely bring up the Gronkowski play, but every db will miss tackles like that v. TEs or other bigger players over the course of a year. Doughty also had a good game in coverage, the PI call on him was bogus IMO, I really hate those calls - a wr can just slow down & get that call. Doughty was penalized for having tight coverage & trying to see the ball. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
The Redskins need a safety like Alvin Walton who can hit and hit hard. Unfortunately, they don't make safeties like those anymore. What we see mostly today are the coverage safeties. Roy Williams, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys, was the last feared safety because of his ability to knock a wide receiver into next week.

The problem with those safeties is the current rules. Walton, though I loved watching him play, would be on the weekly fine list and would routinely get 15 yd penalties if playing today. |

Sorry, but I have to disagree completely with your assertion here. Safeties are the last line of defense; when/if they make a mistake, it often results in a TD for the other guys because there isn't anyone to cover for that mistake. Having a safety that can hit hard is wonderful IF - - AND ONLY IF - - that same guy can cover WRs or TEs downfield when necessary. If he cannot and the WR is waltzing into the end zone for a TD, no one in the stadium or watching at home ought to give a flipping damn if that same safety can "knock a WR into next week." Primary Duty for Safety: Never - - as in NEVER - - get beat deep. Secondary duty for Safety: Be a sure tackler. Tertiary Duty for Safety: "Intimidate" opposing pass receivers. |

The Skins, along w/ a small handful of other defenses in the league, still run a scheme that truly differentiates SS from FS. Our SS would be a perfect fit for a Roy Williams type IMO. ...to the specific issue at hand I think Redskins4ever simply pointed our Laron doesn't scare anyone, which is absolutely true unless that weird pet monkey from a couple years ago is still in captivity at the Landry residence. |

The team just needs two Sean Taylors.

Thank you; you are absolutely correct. The Redskins need safeties who can cover because that is how they play defense. If you had two Sean Taylors - - or two Laron Landrys - - back there, you would see a lot of Redskins plays on ESPN's highlights AND you would also see lots of Redskins opponents catching passes and running into the end zone for TDs. Both guys hit hard; neither covered well. |

I do not agree with this but your statement does bring another question to mind:
Who were the geniuses out there in Ashburn who concluded that Ryan Clark was not up to the task of playing safety in the NFL?
Please note that Clark can and will hit people hard, but his BIG value is that he is a good cover guy and when he gets an angle on someone with the ball he makes the tackle. |

I don't have tape to re-watch games since I erased them from DVR, but from watching every game at least once my take was Haslett puts a safety deep (FS) and another close to the LOS (SS) on the majority of plays. Also, this isn't as obvious watching games on television as seeing them live because all the networks zoom in to the LOS. For instance, I was shocked at how far we kept a safety back in the Seattle game, which I watched from great seats at Centurylink. Seattle doesn't even have a great passing attack. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
I would gladly take our one Sean Taylor back, and I am sure his family would too.
|
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
Also on Doughty he does some good things for sure or he would not be in the NFL.
BUT he can be a liability at times. |

Which is really the first time since early Gregg Williams that this is the case. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
I think you bring him back, even if is it for above average safety salary but below elite.
This is an important offseason for Mike, and the redskins just don't need another hole to fill for someone who can be a difference maker and has been in the defense for a couple years. With all the possibilites at QB, who knows what trades might happen. While the redskins might land exactly who they want at QB, it might leave them without as many picks, and those picks need to be spent on OL depth, WR playmaker, MLB (to groom from London Fletcher's departure) and so on. No need to add Safety to the list when you have someone who is fairly solid. He might not be perfect, but there are way more important positions to upgrade. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
^ this.
I just dont see how we lose Landry and Upgrade the position without sacrificing money, a pick, or a move that we could be using on another position. easy to see and been said many a time. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. LaRon Landry is not worth top dollar. He isn't Ed Reed or Troy Polomalu. He played well last year, which hasn't translated to crap this year because of injury. He need to go ahead and have the surgery and get his Achilles tendon repaired so he can be back at 100%. Mike Shanahan should sign him to a 1 year deal. In that one year deal allow Landry to play to his ability if he wants a high paying long term deal in 2013. But he has to be 100 % healthy.

Good to see props for Reed. Solid player who plays just as well as Landry. |

Get rid of him - he's an over rated hack.

Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
I believe there are 4 relatively well-known safeties who will be free agents after this season is over. If I missed a player, I am sure someone here will add him to this list.
In alphabetical order:
Tanard Jackson Laron Landry Jim Leonhard Gibril Wilson
There are lots of factors that go into a decision to sign a free agent to a long-term deal including age, injury history, injury status, "off-field issues", clubhouse leadership, and more. Nevertheless, a prime factor has to be "on field competence". Translation: Can he play well? So, is Laron Landry the best safety on that list of four simply in terms of his play on the field? I would suggest he is NOT. My order would be:
1. Leonhard 2. Wilson 3. Landry 4. Jackson
FWIW... |

There are no actual football grounds for that evaluation. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
The guy still hasn't even had his surgery yet. No idea what the hell he's waiting on, but the longer he waits, the longer it is before he's back on the field.

Disagree. Both guys are more consistent tacklers from the games I've watched...we need consistent tackling and coverage at safety more than anything. Landry struggles (consistently) at both. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
Disagree. Both guys are more consistent tacklers from the games I've watched...we need consistent tackling and coverage at safety more than anything. Landry struggles (consistently) at both.
You haven't watched Wilson play defense in the last two years because he essentially hasn't played it. Wilson has been cut by each of the last three teams he played for and went from prized FA signing when he left New York to purely a special teams player in Cincinnati this year. I mean, suggesting that Wilson might be a solution at safety is simply a product of being unaware of his career since 2007. He's essentially Reed Doughty at this point, though perhaps the better tackler of the two. Wilson though is a distant backup or third stringer on a team that starts journeyman Chris Crocker at safety.
Leonhard is a different issue entirely. He's run into bigger injury issues than Landry has the last two years, and is one of the centerpieces of an (athletically lacking) Jets secondary. I think you could at least honestly make a good argument for him being an upgrade on Landry, that's just not an opinion I share. I actually like Tanard Jackson as a player, but his off the field baggage is a serious issue that may prevent him from ever getting a contract longer than one year. I think Tyvon Branch is the best safety on the market. Landry is a close second. |
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
Jim Leonard is a system safety point blank. He was sub average at best til rex took over

Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
Healthy he's a top 3 SS, possibly the best in the league. The problem is, whatever supps he's taking, his lower body is breaking down. We all saw this same thing with David Boston, body builder upper body, track star legs equal disaster.
|
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
It would be a mistake to re-sign him unless he has surgery. He's been advised by his doctors to get his achilles surgically repaired and he won't do it; therefore, it won't hold up.
|
Re: Laron Landry - Redskin for life?
I hate how he won't get surgery. I wouldn't even give him a one year deal. Go after Branch or draft someone else.
