I don't think JDR entertained putting Davis on Kirk. The opposing OC and QB get paid to create mismatches. Davis isn't the only LB to ever find himself covering a wide receiver. It happens.
Perhaps but having a LB line up at least 3 times in the slot seems excessive. Sounds like difficulty making adjustments but idk.
I don't disagree, but it also doesn't make sense to have individuals on D not play to their strengths or, more accurately, scheme to their strengths. He has to coach to defensive players he has, not the ones he wishes he had. I think that is where JDR falls pretty short of the mark.
I guess I'm not sure what you want him to do. He has Jamin Davis, Cole Holcomb, David Mayo, Jon Bostic, and Milo Eifler. There's only so much you can do with these guys. Put your DC hat on. How would you scheme to their strengths?

Seriously though, I think the D will be fine and will surprise in the long run. They were much better in week 1 than they were most of last year - especially on 3rd down. If they can build on that, and stop the run (which they really didn't do), it could be fun year.
Eagles too, they let DET score 35 on them... Also The Lions D is trash, if you watched Hard knocks they Let Goff eat them up in most practices and he's very AVG.

Dallas will be a tough game regardless , their D is insane
Was going to include the Birds on my list but didn’t want to get greedy. Lol

Or a bird could have collided with the ball and knock it off course.

The Matrix could have glitched and make Terry completely disappear. I'm telling you a lot of things could have happened.
Lol. This post made me chuckle.
I was going to make a list just about insane sports what if’s like missing the putt, bricking that three, whiffing on a bad pitch but I so wish I had gone matrix, sink hole, bird collision.
We played with 2 LBs 93% of the D snaps.

Davis is going to get mis matched against a RB or WR every now and then. Usually when he is mismatched its an intentional thing done by the O and the O knows it and targets it.

We do the same thing, would love to see mckissic and gibson out there same time bc one of them will have a LB.

Ideally Davis would only have to cover TEs at worst but with 11 or 20 or 21 personnel ... Davis is probably going to have to cover a RB.

LB coverage seems to be the soft under belly of most defenses. Get a mismatch, take your 8-10 yards.
Only 2 linebackers 93% of snaps ..If that is the case then we need to figure out how to get way better players at that position ..

"He's got to play better. He didn't play very well last week," Del Rio said Thursday, just moments after calling Davis' performance a "so-so" outing. "I know he expects to play better. He'll be challenged to play better."

"I saw a lot of good things this offseason and it kind of surprised me he didn't play better," Del Rio said, before later adding, "He's worked really hard. I think he prepared to play better than he did in the opener. We expect him to play better."

"Like I said before, just making more plays, going out there, trying to be more consistent, try to fly around and play a lot faster," Davis said.

"When we do get to [that look], we expect him to hold up," Del Rio said on Davis in coverage. "He didn't hold up very well in that situation. He gave up some big completions. So, we need him to be better and we need to do a little bit better job to make sure we keep him out of those situations."

Davis believes if he continues to "trust his technique" when in coverage, things will start to go his way in the future.

"You just gotta trust your technique at the end of the day," Davis said. "That's one of those things that no matter who you wind up against, you just go out there and do what you got to do, the same thing I've been doing all offseason. So I mean, going forward, it's just, no hiccups, just make more plays."

"Going forward, I know who I am as a player," Davis said. "So [now], just go make plays."

JDR basically said the obvious ... they need to try and limit the times hes 1 on 1 w a WR on in the slot but the times that it does happen, they need him to hold up.

Kam Curl - Im guessing they practiced in TC and planned on having him play in the box/pick up the extra WR etc but with his injury Jamin was the temporary back up plan?

Not ideal but Jamin is our "coverage" LB so hes option B or C, after Curl.

I was looking for this in regards to your post about 2 LBs 93% of snaps.

This has the breakdown from last year's defense

I think we will see Curl or Forrest in a "Buffalo nickel" going forward.

As I undertsood it from another explanation I heard, may have been Loiue Tee, if the back field is empty the WLB becomes responsible for the slot receiver, so it may be a scheme thing. But regardless, until Davis begins to effectively shut down the receiver he is responsible for the opposing OC is going to keep looking for cheap yards/first downs when he is on the field. They only have to look at last weeks film for 5 minutes to figire this out.

I'd like to see us roll with a 4-2-5.

Smith-Williams (Chase when he's back)
Payne
Allen
Sweat

Holcomb
Davis

Fuller
Jackson
Forrest
Curl
Juste or McCain

If we have 5 secondary guys on the field, we should be able to reduce Davis or Holcomb having to cover a slot WR.

I like this idea. Forrest hits like a LB and he's faster than our LBs -- we should make best use of that ability. I know it's one game, but it was impressive, and the reports were that he was impressive all through camp. I am hoping that St. Juste can step up -- there were positive reports on him as well, although I don't have the impression that he had a particularly effective game v. Jax.

Isn't that what they have mostly run? Maybe not exact same personnel, but 4 on the line, 2 LBs, and 5 DBs?

I was watching at a super packed bar so I really didn't pay that close of attention. I thought they were talking about running 5 man fronts.

Hopefully if Forrest can play like that all year we will have more flexibility with the secondary.
