Per this link, Mayhew's focus was primarily on the pro-side of scouting.

https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/nfl-rumors-49ers-exec-martin-mayhew-join-washington-front-office

Hurney - GM
Mayhew - VP of Pro Personel/Scouting
Smith - VP of College Scouting

That would be pretty sweet.
I doubt Mayhew is going to come here as a lateral move. I see it panning out more like this:

Hurney - GM/Ownership babysitter and watchdog
Mayhew - Assistant GM/VP of Pro Personnel/Ownership babysitter and watchdog
Smith - VP of College Scouting

Wouldn't this be a demotion?

Let's be real guys. Given his connections around the league, especially to the coaching staffs of the Rams and 49ers, it's very realistic Smith is out.

I only say this because it's easier to accept when you know it's coming, even if you disagree with it.

That’s what he is now. VP of player personnel. I was dividing out between pro and college. This could go a lot of ways, but I haven’t seen a single report linking Kyle Smith to another team or rumblings about him leaving. He’s young and doesn’t have any GM experience. Staying with WFT and working with two long tenured front office guys is a platform for him to grow into future roles.

I tend to trust JP Finlay on the subject. He has connections inside the building and when he writes things like this I agree with his reasoning.

It's not a matter of Kyle Smith not knowing how to scout. It's not a matter of how well he does his job. It's a matter of Smith being young and Ron preferring experience.

Our Young OC, hired by RR himself, is only 38 years of age. If I do recall, Kyle was promoted since RR came on board.

Yep.

I think the talk of Kyle leaving is a bit premature. He may very well leave between now and the Summer, but he's actually in a good place, so if RR wants him to be part of his team I bet he stays.

He also had a history with our young OC dating back to Carolina.

I’m disappointed in the GM decision, because he’s older, just ANOTHER guy from Carolina and his record hasn’t been that great.

To me the big decision if how they tend to and pay KYLE SMITH. Increase Kyle’s salary and job title and draft/FA involvement. Perhaps Deputy GM?
Keep him here until he can impress Rivera with his GM skills and perhaps he can move up.

The impression I got from the local reporters is that Hurney doesn't want to have to deal with the day to day workload of being a GM, which is why Mayhew is here.... and the prospect of him mentoring Kyle may be realistic. Hurney is here to get the organization straight, I would not expect him to be here for more than 2-3 years, but we shall see

Welcome home, Martin Mayhew!

Mayhew is one of us. He was a very good starting CB when he played in Washington. He's done some good work as a player personnel executive for some other NFL teams and now I'm happy to have him back with us. I'm not about to pre-judge his ability. I'm just wishing him success and satisfaction in his new position.

Don't really understand why Smith would want to go to the Rams or 49ers. Snead and Lynch aren't going anywhere as their GM's.

I was thinking that too last night. I mean, aside from journos suggesting he'll leave, is there any evidence he is unhappy or RR is unhappy with him? As I said before, surely if RR didn't want him there, he'd be sacked by now.

I believe Ron is building a long term structure, you know, the professional organization idea that we all have pined for the past 20 years. People are important, but moreso it is critical that everyone in the building is on the same page. I imagine with Hurney especially RR they know how each other works and thinks so should be more growth and less friction.

Re: Marty Hurney Thread

So Mayhew takes Santos vacant job as pro personnel, Smith stays as college personnel. Hurney is GM. Sounds good.

Seems Eric Stokes (our residing Director of Pro Personnel) was looked over/diminished but he is young, with Panthers for 5 years before coming here so its not a huge diss. Making him Director of Pro Personnel was probably a title bigger than he should have at his young tenure. Jeff Scott has been with us for 9 years and was made the Asst Director of Pro Personnel so he had to work under a younger brand new guy last year.

----------------------

Finally ... Dan Snyder is paying actual money out of his own pocket to give this team a proper organizational structure. We had no HR, no GM, very few scouts vs others teams etc ... took forever to get a training facility and it was a bubble ... had no advanced rehab/PT machines in house until 2 years ago.

Dan would hire a Bruce Allen, let him wear 4 hats and pay 1 salary. Now he has to pay 4 guys 4 salaries to do 4 jobs. Now jobs should be done more competently.

Dan Snyder is top 3 most cheap owners in the league. Finally, he is paying competent guys to have a competent staff vs he pocketing maybe 750k a year by having bare minimum staff.

Ron had to hire him the first time as a younger QB coach with no working history didn’t he?!
