Re: John Beck Era Begins
Starting Beck is the right decision. We need to find out now just how high we need to take a QB in next years draft. As it is now, we're probably going to have a pick in the middle of the 1st round, and all the other teams will KNOW we want a QB, so there is a strong possibility that teams will jump ahead of us to take the QB we want.
If Beck surpises us and plays pretty well, teams wont know with 100% confidence that we're taking a QB (especially given our poor oline depth and lack of a true #1 wide receiver). therefore, seeing what beck can do is extremely important ot the long-term success of the franchise. |
Re: John Beck Era Begins
So, Mike Shanahan is not only racist against black people, he's also an anti-Semite. Tar and feather him!!!!

Sorry, but I don't understand... |
A better question: does McNabb make the HOF? If you only look at his body of work at Philly you could make a case.
A simple answer: No. |
Um...what he's missing is...no Colt Brennan!! **runs and hides**
You had better run and hide. That comment is like the guy in the "Revenge of the Vampire" movies who discoveres the corpse and decides to pull the stake out of the vampire's heart. You are going to awaken the Cult of Colt... No one will be safe. |
Re: John Beck Era Begins
Had to be done.
What I like about this move is not that Beck is going to be the next coming of Theisman or even Dilfer, but it's that Shanahan made the correct call. Imagine the shit storm if he had backed Rex for another week? This is what a decently run organization does. My feeling is that back in the Vinny/Zorn days, something bizzare would have happened at this point. We trade for Mark Brunnell. We get Randel-el as a QB. Etc. Something to make us look even worse than we are with Rex and his 4 ints. As for the state of the QB position for the skins, my feeling has always been that this year's QBs are place-holders. Do you really think Shanny believes that Rex or Becks is going to lead us to the superbowl? Trust me. He does not, barring a miraculous transformation of Becks into Brees. This year is about building, about finding the right blue-collar guys to take you forward. And it's about putting a system in place on offense and defense. Once we do that, we can fill the slots we need. We were not in a good position to get the QB of the future last year. It will happen next year, unless we revert to Vinny-Zorn style craziness (not impossible, given our history under Danny). Much more worrisome to me is the loss of 2 starting OL and Cooly--as it applies to the run game. Shanny is all about the run. If we can't run the ball, it doesn't matter all that much who is QB. To think that losing Kory L would be the big blow this year? Whod a thunk it? |
Interesting the different QB decisions The Genius Shanahan Brain Trust has made since they've been here:
1) Decides not to re-sign Campbell 2) Trades a 2nd round pick (and another pick, I forget which round) for Donovan McNabb 3) Trades for John Beck 4) Signs Rex Grossman 5) Benches Donovan McNabb (then has a disastrous presser explaining why) 6) Starts Rex Grossman the remainder of 2010 7) Trades Donovan McNabb for a side of rice pilaf 8) Praises John Beck in the offseason like he's God's gift (Kyle wanted him 10th overall in Houston, etc etc) 9) Starts Rex Grossman after an open competition in camp 10) Benches Rex Grossman 5 weeks into the season (I agree with this decision wholeheartedly) 11) Names John Beck the starter. WHEW!! Let's hope he starts hitting on some of his quarterback decisions.
You can change this to "Decides to bench Rex after 4 INTS and almost at the end of a very important divisional game." |
Re: John Beck Era Begins
A ray of hope Beckons every time he drops beck to pass. He completes our offensive beckfield.
He fumbled a lot I believe back in 2007 as well. 7 times in 4 games, or something like that. Can't let that happen
Someone, I think on wash post forum, said they were at the game & noticed that Beck's passes are often wobbly, not a tight spiral. That comment made me wonder if his hands are just small & he often slightly loses grip as he begins to throw? The fumble on sunday looked like a case of simple clumsiness & nerves, trying to move fast & make a decision. I'm not too worried about that, I'm more worried about how well he throws the ball w/several blitzers about to pounce on him. He didn't throw well under pressure in the last preseason game, v. the iggles they didn't bring too many after him. At least he can run! |

Didnt Dan Reeves mostly put together the team that Shanahan had his success with? |
Good. Hopefully, we'll see improvement in the situational O playcalling to protect Beck a bit until he settles in.
Hopefully.. like when Kitna took over for Romo and Garrett called plays around Kitna's game and they improved KS is a whole different beast though.. I think that MS needs to get more involved in the next couple weeks' gameplan |

However, it seems the situation here has a more "shrewd" FO since he has at least one subordinate he can take some advice from, Bruce Allen being one of them. |
Re: John Beck Era Begins
There was no other choice. He turned over the ball 2.3 times for the past eight games. He is what he has always been - the year he went to the Superbowl, he had 20 INTs and lost five fumbles. In the last seven games of that season, he turned the ball over eighteen times. The Chicago Bears got where they were that year because of their D; they got there because the D that allowed less than 100 yards per game showed up EVERY game (unlike ours), and could overcome Rex's turnovers.
We are very lucky we are not 1-4 instead of 3-2 because of his mistakes. He needed to be sat in the corner ever since the Dallas game when it was apparent to everyone in the world watching MNF that he was STILL the same Rex whose two INTs and two fumbles constantly shifted momentum back to the Colts in Superbowl XLI - who eventually took over that game and almost blew the Bears out in the 4th.
Yeah people talk about how he went to a SuperBowl... Remember how Lovie Smith had to reiterate just about every damn week that "Rex is our Quarterback" to the media? That's called winning in spite of someone, not because of them. I don't think Rex is terrible overall as an NFL QB, but at this point I don't think he's starting material either. He's where he needs to be, now. Holding a clipboard. Hey, it could be worse. He can spend the next 5 or 6 years chilling on an NFL sideline making in the neighborhood of $1M/season. |
