Just one man's film breakdown but I think gives you an idea of what to expect if Holcomb plays MLB https://markbullock.substack.com/p/david-mayo-highlighted-washingtons?s=r
Solid job making calls and playing middle but better suited outside. One of the things I give credit to staff and Holcomb is I felt earlier in season he was out of position and having to close on the play and later in the season was in position better. Perhaps French with his superior use of technology and keen eye might be able to validate or refute what I was seeing. |
How about develop the LB you just drafted? Giving up and swinging again the year after at a LB position is really bad work by Ron, Mayhew (who has a history of being garbage), and FO.
Coaches aren't giving up on Davis... LB is still a big need regardless of what happens with him and will likely be a big target in the draft |

I don't think they are giving up on him. I think they have just found out that he is better at WLB. He is fast, I have no problem letting him be a playmaker out there. Similar to moving Scherff from T to G. I'd rather have an excellent G than a mediocre T. I'd rather have an excellent WLB (Davis isn't this yet) than a mediocre MLB (which he was, at best). |

Davis, MLB Draft Pick/FA, Holcomb, would be by preference. |

Here is a good article regarding Holcomb's development as a LB and his flexibility.
https://www.commanders.com/news/cole-holcomb-took-steps-as-leader-and-play-caller Maybe he is the plan for MLB. Then Davis at WLB and Devin Lloyd at SLB...? |
CH too slow?
Dude runs like a 4.5 in the 40. I don't ever recall thinking damn this dude is slow.
Well maybe he wasn’t in position like I thought. Just remember him constantly being two steps short of making a play. Bottom line I dont want him playing mlb. Not starting. |
There are only 22 positions, they are all very important. I never get this type thinking. Same reason I was perfectly fine drafting Scherff when we did.
Give me a stud, I don't care what position they play. If we draft another LB and he kicks ass we will all love him.
Totally agree. I think mlb is ultra important though. Just draft one that can fuckin play. I can’t watch opposing tight ends torch us for another year. |

I agree completely. It's clear to me that Holcomb is a Sam and Davis is a Will. Plus this is a very good year to draft a true modern Mike LB, IMO. |

I think Mark Bullock's breakdown are awesome, just don't have enough time to read em all so I didn't subscribe. I've always liked Holcomb, I have to be honest I don't remember noticing a massive difference throughout the season. I think he's way better in coverage than he's given credit for. I actually remember posting his coverage on Elliott, one of the plays highlighted in this link initially posted by BaltimoreSkin . My issue is I'm not sure he's physical enough to secure the center of your defense, he's making a lot plays because he's smart and quite fast, but he's not big for a LB and it's not like he got eye popping speed nor is he a huge hitter. I actually think he's an underrated asset, but we need a sure thing at MLB, a tough physical guy. Some are available, so I don't get why you would go through the bother of having 2 guys transition to new positions + force yourself to find a NFL ready starting outside LB in the draft while you could just sign a veteran MLB and finally have a complete LB squad. |
Re: 2022 Commanders off season thread part 1
I agree French.
For me it just goes back to - Why is the position group with the most questions, the one that both the Head Coach and D Coordinator played? |

Maybe it's actually because of and not in spite of. Maybe they feel like as ex LBs they can coach up anybody and are a bit caught up in their ego like "nah we don't need to spend big $ at LB, let us find gems that nobody else saw and coach em up!". Just speculating. |
Re: 2022 Commanders off season thread part 1
This draft is rich with guys you can plug-n-play at MLB. Yes, there will be growing pains, but EVERY rookie has those. Get one of those and leave Davis and Holcomb where they play the best.

Not knowing much about college football I'll have to trust you on that. But I get the feeling MLB may be the hardest defensive position to learn in the NFL, you're making the calls, you have to know all other 10 players's assignment, and read both an NFL passing offense and an NFL run blocking scheme. I also feel like you never want to be in a position to have to reach, and to me with no pre draft signing this is such a need that they would almost have to, unless they are in continuous contact with available FA MLBs interested to sign here after the draft... |
