Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011
I'm totally with you. I've brought up Moore off and on for a couple of years now. I'm not 100% sure he can be a long term solution as a starter. But I think at the very least he's a very solid backup with starter capabilities. And honestly, I prefer him to Beck.
Me too. At least Matt Moore has started and actually been successful before. And who knows, Mike had luck with Brian Griese, and Gus Ferrotte, and those kind of guys. I like Drew Stanton as well. He can hit that Dougie. Ish. I mean at worse they're back-ups, but Mike seems to have luck in these situations, and they're young and have some talent. Matt Leinart and Tyler Thigpen are two other guys. I mean again, maybe they don't start but, you know, it's something. Thigpen's got one more win as a quarterback than Beck does. And I like John Beck. |
Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011
Stanton's not bad. GTripp is a huge, huge, huge, huge, huge fan of Stanton (slight exaggeration)
I don't know that Leinart gets it. Thigpen is exciting at times, but not-in my opinion-the solution. Moore's biggest problem is that he got hurt last year so he never could find his footing, plus his supporting cast wasn't too strong. |
Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011
Yea out of those quarterbacks my list would be Stanton Moore Thigpen then leinart. I don't know if Leinart has gotten any more humble or a better player

Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011
That's what I was thinking, Smoot. I mean, he had Steve Smith...and Steve Smith. I mean, that was it. Gettis and LaFell are good young players, but they weren't scaring anyone. They didn't have a tight end. DeAngelo Williams was injured, Jonathan Stewart got knicked up, some of their linemen were hurt.
Leinart is more an option, to me, because he knows the offense because he spent a season in it (or something pretty much identical to it) in Houston. Maybe he's not a starter but he could be a viable third guy, and they drafted T.J Yates which says to me they're not looking to bring Leinart back. What I saw of Stanton last season I liked. He can make some plays with his legs, he's got a good arm, good accuracy. And him and Armstrong can have a Dougie off in training camp. There's lots of viable back-up guys that are capable of being developed in the secondary market, which is why I don't think we'll be going after a Vince Young or someone like that. |
Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011
And at least most of those quarterbacks (with maybe the exception of Leinart) they will all come to play and work hard. They want to start and be a winner. People with a Kerrigen mind set (thats what i'm calling it0

Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011
Stanton is best available, with a caveat. I think Nate Davis is by far the best available. He must be a huge douche to his bosses though because he was very available, even before the lockout hit.

Bingo. No handing out starting jobs for anyone. Come in, compete to be the starting quarterback, let the best player win. But filling camp with some young bodies who are hungry to start and are very open to coaching (unlike certain QB's) could be beneficial. |

Nate Davis has the big arm for sure. I mean, he's got a gun that rivals McNabb's or Cutler's. Considering how miserable the QB position has been for 49ers I don't know why he never got a shot or was never even on the roster (I mean the put him on the PS and put Troy Smith on the team out of nowhere even though Smith wasn't in camp or anything). Maybe he's got some work ethic issues? Only thing I can think that would bother Singletary. Okay, so right now my list is; Nate Davis Drew Stanton Matt Moore Tyler Thigpen As a matter of fact, I'm going to put Troy Smith on the list too. He played well for the Niners when he had the opportunity. Yelled at his head coach, but oh well, we need bodies. So... Nate Davis Troy Smith Drew Stanton Matt Moore Tyler Thigpen I want to include Tavaris Jackson, but he's had plenty of opportunities to take the reigns and he's never done it on a consistent basis. Still, mobile. He's got a gun, even though he can't aim it. Anyone else? Undrafted free agent QBs? |

With this lockout looking like it might be over soon (think it will be announced a deal has been made within the next 7 days) thought we might need to start looking at this. |
Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011
It's going to be interesting when this shortened free-agency period starts, especially with the lower payroll teams being "forced to spend" so to speak to meet salary floors. These teams that are going to need to spend a lot in a short period of time to meet the salary floor may wind up overpaying for FA's in a scramble to better the team and meet their salary requirements. This of course will drive up market value for available guys.

Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011

BUT THE ARM STRENGTH! I just read that after he was lost the third string job to Troy Smith, he basically let him go and got really out of shape. He winded up with Seattle but they didn't want him either, so...yeah, that's that. Shame. He's got some talent. |
Re: Free Agency/Franchise Tag thread 2011
might as well go Beck
|
